Yes, today this kind of funding is fairly standard, and there are investment funds that back class actions and even individual suits. Some states permit commercials advertising 'get your money before you win'. In this case, it's such a new thing that nobody wants to touch it with a ten-foot pole simply because they don't understand it and therefore cannot price the risk, which, in the end, is what hedge fund managers (and firms) do before making any investment. That's what led to the rise of CDOs and CDSs, among other instruments.

Interesting thought, especially if it gives him alternate source of income/value. I also wonder what the tax implications would be. I think in today's world, alternate funding for class action and products liability suits is, maybe, common?
