there are actually theories about the "the user of a death note can neither go to heaven nor hell"-thing. a very common one is a theory, where people think that when a user of a death note dies, they become a shinigami. Which would imply that the "realm of shinigami" is actually limbo. didn´t really look like suffering, but boring af for sure. i don´t know if that´s actually confirmed or not tho (i wouldn´t think it would be tbh).
