I'd rather call it flexibility, as long as they are not illegal moves. Niko tends to take everything seriously to preserve her image as a strong, confident martial artist. However, her strict adherence to the standard forms make her fighting style orthodox, and her moves predictable, hence a person who used to train with her frequently can easily counter her. Niko using unorthodox moves to beat Senpai is treated as a sign of her finally breaking free from her "mold".

Both of Kazuki and Niko’s arcs are about them breaking out of their mold, or perceived images, with slight differences: Kazuki, a natural tomboy, gets to step out of her comfort zone (the princely roles) to challenge herself with feminine roles, without letting the fear of failure holding her back. Niko, a girly girl being forced into the tomboy image, learns to break free from the constraints of that image, realizes that she can choose and act for herself, embraces all of her being (including her feminine side), translating it to flexibility in combat.
