Yeah, he is like Saber in Fate in that way. During the 1980s Char topped all anime polls in Japan for YEARS as "best male character" which is pretty good as he was supposed to be the villain.

There's also a prequel to the original series called Gundam The Origin that shows you Char's backstory.
