Studio Wit actually truncated a considerable amount of the “prologue” arc (from the beginning to Onimaru’s turn to the dark side). IMO, it was done to quickly get to the real action (where magical swords are involved), tone down Yaiba’s early-game jerkish behavior, and get rid of inconsistencies with the later stages’ narrative. Onimaru’s sister and grandpa actually appear in person and meet Yaiba in the manga. However, IIRC, they disappeared from the story completely after Onimaru’s transformation. Maybe that’s why they got phased out in this adaptation.
