From what I’ve seen, this is a “truer-to-the-text” adaptation, i.e. closer to the source material than the previous anime. This has been the trend for some time, since many classic long-running manga like this had anime adaptations that never had true closure.

In the original, I felt that that after the great first season, the show prioritized wackiness over the genuine emotion we sometimes got in season 1 with Ranma, Akane and to some extent Ryoga and Shampoo, and I rapidly lost interest. (Of course, at the time I was paying something like $25 in 1990s dollars for every 4-episode VHS tape...). Given how proficient the remake's direction has been, I'm hoping they can avoid this. Mind you, even wacky Ranma is pretty good TV.

In this episode, my favorite part was how Ranma changed to a girl for Shampoo and told everyone "I'm really a girl, the boy the is just a cover!" I can't see him having done that in the first episode, he really has grown more comfortable with girl-form self.
