The reason why the Hashiras don't take Tsuguku is most likely because they fear that they might die, or there is no one that can potentially surpass them in their breathing style techniques.

This was first mentioned in Season 1 Episode 22 where they met Kanao in the butterfly mansion where she is directly the apprentice of the Insect Hashira Shinobu. In the Mugen Train Arc this was also mentioned by Rengoku that he sees Tanjiro as his potential Tsuguko. And lastly Genya also sought help and wants to be trained by the strongest hashira Gyomei, but since Genya can't use breathing techniques and he wasn't officially called a Tsuguko due to it Gyomei still provides him guidance and advice that's also what he told Tanjiro in order to move the boulder.
