But the trick with the bike that has no need to be explained in the anime - he got it for free. Since the books are set ~2 decades in future from when the first story was written, the idea is that this fictional Japan mostly switched to electric transport, and not only taxes old engines owners as part of air pollution regulations, but there's also a talk about possible ban of them altogether. So Agil's friend gave it away used for free to avoid all that Sinon's mom isn't explained either, but after the car crash she was already traumatized to the point of trying to cut anything that may remind her of her husband and live as if they've never met at all. So essentially Sinon doesn't even know if her own mother viewed her as her daughter even prior to this incident...
