We don't know if Methode "beat" Fern, it's possible she just managed to block or evade until Spiegel was destroyed.

Normal mages magic can only do what they can imagine. In Übels case she can imagine the impossible and her magic does the impossible for her, but its still imagine first and then the magic does the work. In Frierens case its probably that visualization and magic become one hence why its called the heigth of magic, thus everything she can imagine just happens?
