SOUND & VISION

This photo shoot seems like a lifetime ago, even though it was only two months back. At the time I was in the middle of one of the hardest times of my recent life, suffering through a major photography blow, a loss of one of my oldest and dearest friends, being downsized from my day job, going through a real questioning of whether I should quit photography, and one of the worst colds I’d had in my life. Needless to say, I was at my wit’s end.

But slowly, like the receding of the glaciers from North America, I could see subtle glimpses of hope. I was being shown love from a new girlfriend that was proving to be everything I’ve ever wanted, my strength was slowly beginning to return, and I had the interest (though lacked the desire) to continue to shoot something, anything.

So on a whim I texted Tazia and arranged to come over one Wednesday morning and experiment with lighting, as I tend to do when feeling creatively dry. She is always fun and easy to work with, and once we began playing she loved the results and process. This color flash-drag technique is different even time I do it, and I always learn something new, choosing to experience it rather than write it down and dissect it.

By the time Tazia was done stopping and flashing her breasts and spinning around, we both felt as though we had accomplished something new. I felt a slight suggestion of hope, of new energy, and she was excited to have images that were far more complex than the boring “sexy senior portraits” she was used to shooting with her usual set of local, amateur, naive camera-owners. The experience was well-needed, and it slowly showed me there might be a light at the end of the tunnel. And I’m happy to report, I’m about halfway down that tunnel and the light is only becoming brighter.
