THE BEGINNING OF THE END

For years I hated Black and White photography. It seemed so lifeless, so blah, so dead. Color was where it was at for me, with the passion, intensity, the vibrancy that later I attributed to my Mexican heritage and it’s constant ned to be hit over the head with bright saturation. It wasn’t until years later that I learned the biological differences we humans have when seeing color. When humans see color, we’re able to differentiate what foods are good and which ones are poison. The red berries should be more carefully scrutinized while the blue and orange berries are less poisonous. Thus, we see color with our stomachs.

Black and white, on the other hand, is cerebral. We see it with our analytical minds, discerning shapes and patterns and angles and variations of the monochromatic tones. We are forced to spend more time on Black and White images. They make us think more, make us more contemplative by nature. And maybe for all those years I was unable to quiet my mind long enough to appreciate that.

Even in college, though I couldn’t stand shooting Black and White images of my own, I did appreciate it in the work of others. I just couldn’t personally make that leap until a few years ago, and even then I struggled. Now it seems a majority of my work wants to lean towards the Black and White world. I don’t know if that’s a good thing or bad, but I’m trying not to fight it, trying to go with the flow, as they say.

Enjoy this series of the beloved Jenna, in stark, contrasting black and white, all for your pleasure and appreciation.
