Viktoria in Switzerland
The grass was damp and the air had a chill to it, with the rain having only stopped moments before. She exited the small trailer wearing a white crop top and simple skirt, mimicking the idea of a farm girl in a different time, a simpler time. Her look was natural, not overdone, and surely not the aesthetic of a Ukrainian high fashion model that she was. Within moments she was stripping down to her tanlines, and soon she was free and exposed to the cloudy world at large.
My friend Sharon, whose farm it was, began clicking wildly over my shoulder. She is a family and portrait photographer who never has access to models, so the fact that I had arranged for one to travel from Zurich out to this small pasture-land near the German border was exceptional to her. Viktoria didn’t mind at all, prancing around, stretching and posing, dropping to her knees then springing to her feet once again, working her angles and keeping aware of the camera’s perspective at all times like the pro that she was.
We were under the gun, rushing because she had to make the next train back to Zurich in a couple hours, so I switched lenses wildly, keeping them loosely in my pockets without covers or caps on to protect the glass. Every shot I took was gold, so at times I barely even looked, or composed, or focused. I knew no matter what I clicked would be worth the effort, and that anything she gave to me would be exactly what I didn’t know I had wanted.
