JUNO - RAIN
Thank you all for the kind messages I’ve received about the recent development in my personal life. Though I’ve had the occasional fling here and there, I haven’t had a stable relationship in a long while, and I’m happy to report that I am now dating an incredibly special person who seems to care about me as much as I care about her. It has left me feeling conflicted, nervous and confused, yet also supremely confident. I’ll reluctantly admit that all the clichés are true, when someone loves you, the world simply seems brighter.
In honor of this feeling, I’m sharing one of my newest and favorite recent shoots, of the great and talented Juno. This specific series was taken towards the end of our shoot, but it was momentous for several reasons. First, the model was exceptionally lovely, and her shapely proportions were a surprising and pleasant aspect of the shots. But we also were extremely lucky with the weather. It had been overcast all day, but as the sun slowly began to set, the clouds parted and let through a large amount of warm-toned sky.
I had Juno change into a red, lacy bra she had brought and I directed her to have her back to the sun, and I held a reflector precariously over my head with one hand while shooting with the camera in the other. Somehow, things turned out alright.
With the hour getting late, I told her to throw on a shirt and hop inside my vehicle. I threw the reflector in the back of my pickup and sat down in the drivers seat, continuing some candid small-talk with her. Just as I was about to start the vehicle, I noticed a light sprinkling of rain hitting the windshield, and I quickly asked her if she got cold easily and if she’d be interested in shooting quickly in the rain, which of course she was down for.
You have to realize, in this part of California we rarely get rain, and what’s even more rare is having a great nude model nearby when it briefly happens. So I told her to quickly take her shirt off and get out of the truck, and I quickly grabbed a towel to place over the camera since the rain was almost immediately starting to come down rapidly and steadily. She turned on her charm, looking as ethereal and elegant and emotional and lost as she had earlier, but with the added weather and colors of nature matching her mood. The clouds slowly crept in further again as I clicked away, becoming more and more wet in the fierce drizzle, and I didn’t want to stop shooting! It was a magical moment, and everything we were getting seemed too good to be true. I was catching the rain drops in midair, and she was lost in the moment, swaying in the gentle breeze. The ambient light and colors were muted yet rich, and I was in absolute creative heaven.
After only a few minutes, I could see large goosebumps on her skin, so I told her to get inside the truck and get warm. As I collected myself and began to follow her, the rain quickly slowed and almost immediately stopped, so that by the time we were both inside the cab of my small pick-up, it had completely ceased. It was a perfect moment, and without saying a word we both looked at each other in silence for a moment then burst out laughing with excitement at how magical and perfect the brief experience had been. We huddled in the cab like that for a few minutes, looking through the images on the back of the camera together and feeling so satisfied with the results. This was a rare moment that doesn’t happen very often, when there is a symbiosis of model, weather, timing, trusting your gut, and simply delivering on your creative drive. I’ve only had a few such moments in my life, and each one is as special and memorable to me as anything else could be.
So please let me know what you think of this series, especially the last several images!
