JUNO
This was my official first shoot of 2018. At the end of November I received a message from Juno, a new traveling model from the Oakland area. She seemed sweet and professional and was eager to shoot with me on her way to LA on first big tour South. I usually am quite picky these days about working with new women, but I loved her look and general aesthetic and quickly agreed.
When she arrived on the 2nd of January, she was gentle, friendly, warm, and open. We got along well immediately, and I liked how upfront and honest she was about her troubled past and how she was working hard to overcome it all. She was raised in a conservative, sketchy part of eastern California, quite a Trumpy and redneck area, where she fell down a dark hole of drugs and abuse that she worked hard at digging herself out of a couple years ago.
Now 21 and focused on making good work, Juno is determined to build up her base of supporters and has lots of great ideas for work. We talked for over an hour o my sofa, connecting and having a good time, then realized that we probably should start shooting since she still needed to get to LA before it became too dark.
We picked out some clothing and headed out to Sisquoc, Ca, where the weather was overcast and chilly, but she didn’t complain at all. She slipped on a few simple, white outfits I liked then I positioned her under an oak tree. She looked like such a wood nymph, a fairy princess, and I knew I had made the right choice in agreeing to shoot with her. She was such a natural, and her beauty and mannerisms were effortless.
We joked and laughed a lot while shooting, and though she is a bit shy and quiet at times, she definitely came to life and became quite talkative at times. Her smile was natural and easy, and I wished I could shoot her far more often. I had her change outfits a few times, quickly stripping out of them each time. I also shot several clips of video, though I don’t know if they will make a cohesive narrative of any kind. (More on that later.)
We continued to shoot more, but that will be for a second post later on. For now, enjoy this series, which I found to be more meaningful high contrasty black and white. Though I never used to like making my images black and white, in the past year or two I’ve really come to appreciate the intensity and dynamic nature of the images. What are your opinions on these?
