WHAT DREAMS MAY COME

When I was a boy, pale-skinned women were the epitome of beauty to me. Being mostly tan year round, I marveled at fair-skinned white girls, often with freckles and light-toned hair, and thought their lightness radiated internally. Of course over the years I realized that beauty is far more diverse than all that, but when I meet a truly natural redhead with fair skin, I’ll admit my ability to be rational and logical get thrown out the window.

So imagine my excitement when three of my closest and beautiful model friends, all fair-skinned and two of them redheaded, would all be meeting for the first time near LA a few months ago. First there was Jesslyn, a 22 year old tough-talking artist that loves to drink and curse as much as any local sailor. Then there is Brooke Eva, who I have been lucky enough to work with and collaborate on workshops with for years. And last but not least, there was Jessamyne Rose, that sweet, fun, potty-mouthed Australian whose red hair and freckles tend to make my head spin whenever we’re together.

They joined me at the Cricket Ranch, the housing complex in Van Nuys of Matt Cooper, who turned a block of residential housing area into a sprawling campus of pool, gazebos, bee-keeping, and so much more. Matt was kind enough to feed us all while we were there, and we thanked him by talking all things photography and art while getting all the ladies naked.

Brooke had just come back from a three month long trip through Europe and was exhausted, but she decided just to show up and hang out.Jesslyn just happened to live a few minutes away, having moved down from our hometown up north to attend college for graphic design. And Jessamyne thankfully just made time in her busy shooting schedule to get dropped off, needing a ride home later.

We all just hung out, caught up, and the ladies all finally got to meet each other after years of seeing each other’s work. They gossiped, shared stories of mutual friends, and eventually agreed to take a few photos. Jessamyne went first, and I shot her indoors before shooting her in the little gazebo area Matt had set up the year before overlooking the pool. Next I shot Jesslyn in the pool, who was most eager of the three to get new images and craved the camera’s attention. Though cold, she was happy to dive into the pool. Lastly came Brooke, who was content just sitting and talking, but after much prodding gave in and slowly inched into the freezing water herself. It took a bit of convincing, but eventually Jessamyne got in as well.

There wasn’t much thought put into these shots of them all together, and with the sun going down, we only shot for about fifteen minutes before I told them to hop out, dry off, and get warm. I felt like I was torturing them, but being professionals, they never really looked to be too miserable, overall. Enjoy this rare series of three talented models who may never meet again. I’m honored they consider me their friend.
