VIKTORIA IN SWITZERLAND
Ah, the cornfield. Here is the second installment of Viktoria in Switzerland, tis time in the now infamous cornfield. I personally had never seen a cornfield until the summer of 2009 when I drove cross country and visited Iowa, and I for sure had never taken photos in one. So when my friend Sharon and her husband Bert said we could shoot Viktoria, the traveling model from the Ukraine, within the stalks, I was excited.
I love doing new things, and with Viktoria’s arrival and eagerness to shoot anything we could, our second set-up was in the cornfield. Viktoria, as you’ll see in the behind-the-scenes images, didn’t give a crap about being seen nude in public, changing her clothes in full view of the main road only 100 feet behind her. As Sharon laughed and cringed saying “Well, everyone in the village knows what we’re doing now…” Viktoria kicked off the rest of her underwear and slipped on the dress someone had recently given her. It was some weir designer gown worth a lot of money, but to me it looked like an old farm dress made of scraps of cloth. Either way, it fit the area (and her shape) perfectly, and we dove right in.
“Be careful of the corn leaves,” Sharon advised as I walked headlong into the stalks, “they’re sharp and will cut you.” I had no idea, and even though I’d been raised in a rural area in California, in comparison to the Swiss natives living in this truly isolated area, I was practically “a city boy.” Viktoria clearly had gotten the memo, ducking down and carefully brushing the leaves away with her hands as she elegantly strode through the rows of corn. After several feet I told her she could stop, because even though we were still only a few feet from the edge of the open field, the corn was so high and dense that we were completely visually isolated.
With almost no direction, Viktoria just started. She stretched and posed, slowly stripping the dress down, teasing her perfect breasts and occasionally smirking at me and the camera, asking silently with her eyes if everything was what I wanted. And she knew that it was.
I couldn’t stop shooting, and ended up clicking the shutter far more times than I should have. But I didn’t want to miss out on a moment, a pose, a gesture. Viktoria was fun, quiet but not shy, and though heavily accented in her Ukranian, her English was very easy to understand. Hell, her English as better than some Americans I know. I had her strip down, crouch in the dirt a bit, then pull her dress back on and do it all again in a different way. She knew what I was getting at and never questioned me once.
All the while, Sharon, also a great photographer, clicked over my shoulder, asking each time I took a breath if she could squeeze in, which I always allowed her to do. She so rarely gets a chance to shoot models, only when visiting me in America or when I bring them to her farm there in Eastern Switzerland, that she was dying to shoot whatever she could.
We probably weren’t in the field more than 20 minutes since Viktoria was in a real time crunch to catch her train back to Zurich, and though we had over an hour and a half before that time, we had two other locations we wanted to squeeze in. Once Sharon and I both reluctantly admitted to getting all the shots we needed and forced ourselves to say we were done amongst the corn, Viktoria once again strode out topless to the open field and changed in the open. I would have sworn that some pervy passerby would have honked or hooted, as is typical in America, but there wasn’t a sound to be heard from any of the vehicles passing. The Swiss are just too calm, reserved, and frankly boring to ever do such a thing. That kind of action would be calling attention to themselves, and they are frankly too polite to engage in such activities.
Dressed agaqin, Viktoria hopped in the back seat and Sharon drove us to the next location where I knew we’d make more magic…
