QUIET TIMES
I’m always open to reasonable suggestions, and lately many people have been requesting me to dig back into my archives and share more full sets of images from the past. One of the most talented and beautiful women I’ve ever shot with is OhThumbelina, whose face is clearly flawless and whose energy seems palpable in all her images.
This is Part One of a series she and I shot down in F&D Studios about two years ago. The studio is located in downtown LA, and it’s popular because it’s also one of the cheapest photo rental studios in the city. I’m not sure why I agreed to shell out the money for the place at that time, but it was a good learning experience. I know many people who shoot there often, and once you get a feel for the place, you suddenly see it’s backgrounds and natural light set-ups in countless photographers’ work from California.
OhThumbelina, real name Alina, is incredibly shy, and the experience of working with her is incredibly similar to her appearance on camera. She’s quiet, deliberate, and simply doesn’t volunteer anything until asked. Don’t get me wrong, she’s polite and friendly and voices her opinions about things, but she’s definitely not the kind of outspoken model I prefer.
And to be perfectly honest, I felt stifled in that studio environment. I missed having people walking by, barging in, and having the elements of nature changing the light and wind constantly. Even in people’s homes, there are interesting and one-of-a-kind artifacts in the background. But a white, indoor space with bog windows proved to be a great challenge. I kept making use of the few things that were different or were changing in the room, like the small patch of light streaming onto the floor as the sun moved across the sky that afternoon. Thankfully Alina is a pro and made use of anything I asked of her. Though I hadn’t looked at these images in a while, there are still several in this series that surprised or impressed me, especially those darker shadowed shots. Since my current work is trying to get darker and moodier, I could really appreciate them in a way I maybe couldn’t even a few years ago.
I honestly can’t remember how the day ended or what I ended up doing that night, if I stayed with friends or drove home the three hours immediately after we were done. I do know it took me about two weeks to edit through and send her the best two dozen shots we took. Thankfully, batching out this much larger set only took me a fraction of that time.
