FRESH FACES!

Several people have asked me about the woman I shot in my elaborate headdress last week. Here’s the story of how we met:

I’m in the mood lately for anything positive. Anything humorous or goofy or light-hearted and fun. I read too much news, listen to too much NPR, stay up to date with too many horribly topics about reality. I don’t need any more negativity. Which is why I definitely needed to meet Shaley.

I discovered Shaley’s photos on Instagram one evening when I couldn’t sleep. She had posed for just a few photos for a local photographer walking in downtown, casual and smiley. Nothing elaborate or fancy or remotely staged or sexy about her. But I knew she was special. Clicking on her profile, I discovered dozens of photos of her cute smile and dorky faces mixed with plenty of other images showing that she didn’t take herself seriously at all. Oh, and she was also naturally stunning. So I immediately messaged her and asked if she’d be interested in working with me. To my surprise, a few days later she was in my living room, posing and being silly, all while her friend Rainy looked on and encouraged her to “rage”!

Shaley is your average dorky Physics student. “Bottom of my class, I’m the dumbest one there!” She says self-consciously, though I know she’s being hyperbolic. Likening her to the equivalent of a female Don Knotts mixed with a young Steve Martin, the things that come out of Shaley’s mouth are closer to an old, beloved Jewish grandma than to any hot model you’d want to meet at the bar. But frankly, and this probably says a lot about me, I prefer Shaley’s approach. She’s fun and genuine and real, and this test shoot was one of the most laugh-out-loud funny shoots I’ve had in maybe a few years. We connected quickly and she truly brought out my clever, charming self, which I feel has been dormant for several months, maybe longer.

Though this set contains over 300 images, far more than usual, I don’t have much to say other than we had a lot of fun and you can see it. I actually didn’t set up a cohesive lighting idea, I just turned on my overhead fan lamp that happened to have a blue bulb in it, then switched on a nearby hot light. I didn’t direct her because I was enjoying her natural mannerisms so much, and I think when scrolling through these shots you can see just how much fun she is in general.

Once she had changed, gotten naked, and put her clothes back on, it was Rainy’s turn. Rainy is a curvy, very loud, outspoken lady that was immediately flirting with me in a very blunt and open manner in front of Shaley, so I called her on her bluff and she didn’t back down. While Shaley was changing in the bathroom, I told Rainy to get naked and stand against the wall, and without hesitation her dress flew off over her head, reveal that Rainy doesn’t like wearing underwear. Ha!

When Shaley came out of the bathroom, we both instructed her to get naked again and they stood together, comparing apples and oranges of their bodies, and Rainy unexpectedly hoisted tiny Shaley over her shoulder and spun her around for a moment, much to everyone’s delight. The evening ended about twenty minutes later, but only after Rainy belted out several Whitney Houston songs that gave me goosebumps and a mild erection.

Only three days later did Shaley come and fill in for Erika for that headdress shoot, and we’ve been friends ever since. I also have a simple, sexy, straight-forward set of Shaley coming soon, but you’ll have to wait for that.
