DAY IS DONE

As a Boy Scout growing up, I often heard the song Taps played and sung. If you think you don’t know it, look it up. The moment you hear those somber tones, you’ll immediately know what I’m talking about. But many people don’t know there are words to Taps. And we used to sing it often.

Though there are several verses, the one I know best is the first:

“Day is done, gone the sun,
 From the lake, from the hills, from the sky;
 All is well, safely rest, God is nigh”.

This tune, and the lyrics above, used to give me great comfort as a young teen. Though like most teenagers I was losing my faith in an omniscient and all powerful god, I was still deeply craving a sincerity and a feeling of a power greater than my own. Those romanticized and idealized songs aided me in that.

So often during a photo shoot, while beautiful women are stretched out naked before me, when other men would be lusting after the shapes in their presence, I’m usually thinking of something else. I’ve been caught comparing the image and composition in front of me to a Caravaggio painting or one of my favorite comic book covers in my head. Sometimes a song lyric or movie quote will come out of my mouth. I don’t know any other model photographers that this happens to, but for me, it’s a regular occurance.

On this day, while trying to get the sunburst between Whitney and Madeliene’s noses just right, I suddenly heard the first line of Taps. And no matter how many jokes we told, stories we shared, or butt shots we took that day, for the rest of the night I still had that song bouncing around my brain. I guess I’m just a weirdo.

You're just a weirdo if you don't miss the smell of campfire smoke on your clothes after a weekend spent out in the wild. :scout salute:
