And with that, we were through. After a long day, we knew there would only be one more shoot the next morning before she headed back to Los Angeles. Having to wait until the fire died down, I took a stick and broke up the remaining stacks of paper, waiting for them all to catch and flutter themselves out.

We ended up staying out there staring at the ashes, mostly silent for at least half an hour, with the fire rekindling and dying itself down multiple times. The embers looked like twinkling city lights the way they'd appear from a plane at night, small and flickering, slowly turning off one by one until all that is left is contented darkness.
