Tokyo Girlfriend Guide Chapter 1

Chapter 1: The First Encounter with Nishimiya Shouko

Sitting in the last row near the window, the standard protagonist's position, Hojou Kyousuke rested his chin on his right hand and gazed outside, utterly bored.

The bright sunlight carried a hint of warmth as it streamed in, causing his hair to sway gently.

Raising his right hand, he revealed his face – clean-cut bangs, black hair, black eyes – though still a bit immature, the sturdy lines of his facial features were discernible. His overall appearance was handsome and full of charm. However, at the moment, he seemed listless, on the brink of dozing off, lacking enthusiasm for anything.

"Yawn~"

Stretching his body while yawning widely, Kyousuke shifted his hand to support his chin and glanced around the classroom.

Kids sure are noisy. Such good weather wasted on not being able to sleep properly.

Hojou Kyousuke, a sixth-grader who had transmigrated for twelve years, complained inwardly.

Yes, he was a person from another world, already living as Hojou Kyousuke for twelve years. He resided in Ogaki City, with both parents alive, no younger sister, and a useless system. That sums it up.

Let's give a brief introduction of the system since he would have to rely on it to survive.

It was a nameless third-rate system, offering only two functions.

One was the automatic identification of "celebrities" that appeared in his surroundings. Celebrities referred to the female characters from previous-life anime, categorized as "protagonists" or "side characters."

The second function: after Kyousuke altered the fate of a "celebrity" or fulfilled their wishes, he would receive a "beauty's gift."

As for what exactly that reward entailed, Kyousuke had no idea. After all, he was just a sixth-grade elementary school kid and lacked the ability to change others' fates. Besides, until now, he had only encountered one "protagonist" and a few "side characters."

Furthermore, while the system would inform him about the origin of the "celebrity," unfortunately, Hojou Kyousuke hadn't watched many anime in his previous life. Consequently, he couldn't take effective actions for certain "celebrities," just like the few "side characters" currently in the same classroom as him.

"Hey, lucky you, Ishida."

A voice came from the seat on the right, though not directed at Kyousuke.

Kyousuke turned his head, initially not wanting to pay attention, but he got curious about the commotion in the classroom.

The girl speaking had long, pitch-black hair, her blue-purple eyes radiant in the sunlight, matched with a cute T-shirt befitting a little girl.

If Kyousuke hadn't chosen to block the system's messages, a character description—[A Silent Voice, Ueno Naoko (Supporting Character)]—would appear above the girl's head.

However, every time the system made such a fuss, Kyousuke would note down the information and then choose to block it.

After all, dividing people into protagonists and side characters in the real world was too cruel; the system was just rubbish!

Kyousuke deeply condemned the system, but not because of its demand for him to change others' fates. It didn't provide specific instructions, leaving him to be an ordinary elementary school student, merely watching the system while these years passed.

Ueno Naoko poked the shoulder of the hedgehog-haired boy next to Kyousuke.

"Huh? What are you saying?"

The hedgehog-haired boy, absorbed in playing with an automatic pencil, replied.

"Hey, lucky you, there's a transfer student, a girl."

Ueno Naoko continued.

"Oh, I'm not interested."

The hedgehog-haired boy kept playing with his pencil. It was evident that, like Kyousuke, he wanted to sleep, though he was doing it out of boredom, while Kyousuke just felt the weather was great for sleeping.

Just as Kyousuke turned his head back, his gaze met with Ueno Naoko's.

Hey, why are you looking over here when talking to Ishida?

Kyousuke smiled at the girl. "Ueno, could you tell me about the transfer student you mentioned?"

Yes, finally, he reacted!

Ueno Naoko's heart cheered, though her face feigned calm.

"Oh, well, you see, there's a girl transferring to our class. Everyone is discussing it."

"I see, thank you for letting me know."

Kyousuke thought it was the end of school, but unfortunately, his hopes were dashed. He turned back to the window to continue daydreaming.

"Everyone, back to your seats."

The homeroom teacher of Kyousuke's 6th grade, 2nd class entered the room – medium-length hair, glasses, sportswear, and a whistle around her neck.

Due to Japan's elementary school system, this homeroom teacher was essentially the class's "caretaker."

The teacher was responsible for all aspects of the class, including teaching and life management. If one ended up with a terrible homeroom teacher, their school life would be ruined.

Thankfully, homeroom teacher selection was strict, and "demon" teachers were rare. But exceptions did exist.

"We have a new friend joining us today."
As the teacher spoke, the classroom quieted down, and everyone turned to look at the front door of the classroom.

Hojou Kyousuke also joined everyone in looking towards the front. His keen senses picked up on the element of a protagonist – "transfer student"! Even if he hadn't watched much anime, he knew that this kind of setup usually indicated a protagonist.

Ueno Naoko suddenly felt displeased. While she had initially planned to use this topic to capture Hojou Kyousuke's attention, it seemed even he, who usually appeared indifferent to everything, was now focused on the transfer student. She couldn't help but feel irked.

"Come in."

The homeroom teacher gestured towards the door.

"[A Silent Voice, Nishimiya Shouko (Protagonist)]"

Before Kyousuke could see what the little girl looked like, the large font captured his attention.

As usual, he blocked it and then observed this rare protagonist.

Indeed, this was only the second protagonist he had encountered thus far.

With her head slightly lowered, she had fluffy brown short hair that covered her ears. Her large eyes had irises slightly darker than her hair. Her whole head appeared round, exuding an extraordinary cuteness.

She wore a pink T-shirt with a name tag on her chest that read "Nishimiya."

"Are you ready? Then go ahead and introduce yourself."

The homeroom teacher spoke to Nishimiya Shouko. Kyousuke was probably the first person in the class, aside from the teacher, to know the little girl's name.

Strangely, even after the teacher finished speaking for quite a while, Nishimiya Shouko hadn't started her self-introduction.

Is she shy? That doesn't seem like her.

Observing the tranquil smile on Nishimiya Shouko's face, Kyousuke speculated.

The surrounding classmates began to stir, even the hedgehog-haired boy, Ishida Shoya, who was playing with his automatic pencil while looking down, couldn't help but raise his head curiously.

At that moment, the homeroom teacher showed an expression of "I forgot" and lightly patted Nishimiya Shouko's shoulder.

Startled, Nishimiya Shouko's shoulder twitched, and then she smiled gently. She lowered her head and opened the large red bag she had been holding in her hands.

From it, she pulled out a notebook with the words "Pen Talk" written on the cover.

Kyousuke clearly saw Ishida Shoya hedgehog hair stand even more on end, his somewhat slouching body straightening up a bit. Kyousuke knew that was the sign Ishida Shoya was interested.

Nishimiya Shouko turned the notebook horizontally and flipped to the first page.

"Nice to meet you, my name is Nishimiya Shouko."

A surprised exclamation echoed in the classroom, and Kyousuke widened his eyes.

The notebook turned to the next page.

"I want to make friends with everyone through this notebook."

Nishimiya Shouko flipped through the pages earnestly, pausing for a moment after each page turn so that everyone could clearly read the content.

"Please use this notebook when talking to me."

"My ears can't hear."

When the notebook reached its last page, Nishimiya Shouko raised it.

"Is this for real?"

"Can it be?"

"Is she joking?"

"..."

The elementary school students began to discuss animatedly, while Nishimiya Shouko continued to stand there with a tranquil smile, holding the notebook.

Now Hojou Kyousuke understood why this little girl could become a protagonist.

A transfer student, a person with disabilities, undoubtedly a school bullying heroine. Kyousuke had even figured out who would bully her – those troublemakers like Ishida Shoya's group, always seeking excitement.

"Awesome!"

Ishida Shoya suddenly yelled out, and his hair seemed to stand on end as if electrified.

Indeed, Hojou Kyousuke watched Ishida Shoya with an amused expression.

Perhaps I can earn my first reward now?
