Engagement Challenge: 100 Clever Ways to Die
Added 2023-05-17 23:05:47 +0000 UTC
(See 5/25 update at the bottom.)
You guys may find it interesting that some of the ideas featured in 100 Clever Ways Thaumaturges have Committed Suicide: How to Avoid Offing Yourself Through Sheer, Reckless Stupidity came from reader comments and questions. (Either directly, or which I thought of after being inspired by the comment.)
Clever readers have come up with a lot of ideas for ways someone in the Practical Guide to Sorcery universe might achieve ultimate power, break the rules of the world over their knee, and generally munchkin their way out of problems.
Some of these ideas are obviously reckless, but some are deceptively reasonable, even...clever.
But one of my rules for the worldbuilding is to avoid "hacks" that everyone who lives within the world just aren't clever enough to have come up with yet. (And which, of course, the ingenious main character discovers easily and uses to wow all the plebeians with her genius and impossible skill.)
If it seems like a cheat, either it's unachievable for the average person, or it'll probably result in great destruction and death for the clever person and possibly those around them, as well.
I have a list of these ideas to break the world and apotheosize to godhood, or just to cleverly kill an enemy in a way that they'll never realize!
So here's the challenge:
Give me your own clever ideas.
They can be sneaky or ultra-powerful attacks, ways to achieve godhood or ultimate power, possibilities that seem to break the previously stated rules of magic or physics, or just general munchkinry.
There's no need for these ideas to be ridiculous or obviously dangerous, though that is also welcome. Feel free to submit ideas that might actually work, too. After all, just because Siobhan/Sebastien doesn't know about some avenue to (moderate) power, doesn't mean it doesn't exist, and that others in the world haven't already discovered it.
There are some examples in Chapter 151 - One Hundred Ways to Die. Others have been sprinkled throughout the story.
Here are some more, of various levels of plausibility:
- Regenerative magics that constantly drain vitality from a number of plants or animals, thus allowing the recipient of all of this vitality to live forever.
- Safely cast through your own body, without need for an external Conduit, by subjecting the subject to a curse that completely negates all pleasure, and thus does away with the extremely addictive nature of channeling magic through one's own flesh.
- Sacrifice a Conduit to enhance the channeling ability of another Conduit, or the channeling ability of your own body.
- Transplant a beast core into a human to enhance their channeling ability.
- Sacrifice more, bigger, better! Draw a Circle around an entire building, town, or mountain.
- What counts as "inside the Circle?" Make a Circle with your forefinger and thumb and put it over your eye, thus bounding everything you see "inside the Circle."
- Use light illusions to draw a Circle and spell array, for either the caster of the illusion or someone else to use to cast a separate spell.
- Sacrifice an animal to learn what it saw.
- Sacrifice a person to gain their skill in magic.
Rewards, also known as "Why should I participate?":
I will feature some of the most interesting options in the story, as a selection of entries in 100 Clever Ways Thaumaturges have Committed Suicide.
In addition to that, if the community is able to come up at least 25 distinct, novel ideas by then, I will post an additional chapter on Tuesday, June 6th.
This challenge is available to everyone, and the reward will be for everyone. Feel free to drag your friends into it! Post your ideas in the comments below.
Rules/Restrictions:
- The challenge ends Monday, June 5. You can still submit ideas after that point, but they will not count toward the contest.
- Check the list of already posted ideas. You can post a duplicate, but you won't get credit for it.
- Nothing that I've already mentioned in the book, such as transmuting enough gold to become the most wealthy person on the planet. Again, you won't get credit for ideas already covered.
- No ideas that require knowledge from the modern world, which you can consider anything that was discovered after 1905-1910 or so. Synthesizing plutonium might be a great way to painfully kill someone without getting caught, but it's not a viable option for people who live in the PGTS world, because they haven't discovered plutonium.
- I will be judge, jury, and metaphorical executioner on whether submitted ideas meet the criteria or not. I'll be active in the comments and update the post with the reader community's progress.
5/25: Important Updates!
1. I just learned that you can't comment on this post unless you're a patron, despite it being viewable to the public. That was not intentional on my part. If you're not a patron and want to participate in this challenge, post your response in the comments of the latest chapter on my website, RoyalRoad, or wherever else you're reading this.
2. You guys have blown me away with the outpouring of responses to this challenge. We have definitely hit 25 admissible ideas, and by my count, gone well over. You guys are getting a bonus chapter on the 6th.
Some submissions are clever and insightful, and the magic actually does or would work in the way you've deduced, but hasn't been mentioned in the story because it's temporarily beyond Siobhan's scope. Some of you have even almost directly outlined magical innovations the story is already planned to explore.
Some are really reasonable, funny ideas for ways some uncautious person could have a bad accident while trying to do something clever.
Some are so incautious it seems like anyone in the PGTS world who didn't realize they would have consequences deserves to win a Darwin Award. But then again I think that about people on Earth, too, so it doesn't make them necessarily implausible.
And a small minority wouldn't actually work, because they contradict the structure of the PGTS world's magic system's mechanics.
Another small minority have already been mentioned in one of the books so far, and so while valid, don't count for the purposes of this challenge.
Thank you to everyone who's given their ideas so far. The Challenge is still open until Monday, June 5th, so if you have more, feel free to submit them for fun.

Since we know that transmogrification is powered by the collective thoughts of the sentient beings (at least that’s what I think was said). If a powerful thaumaturge cast a spell that could influence the thoughts of people with some normal materials and some materials that shouldn’t add anything to the spell but the objectives of the spell was to influence all the people who were affected by it to believe with a stronger conviction than anything they have ever thought something before it could start with a small area but each time it is cast it should be stronger than the last creating a stronger and stronger material that could be only something the caster can obtain such as their own blood or hair so now the caster has a replenishing supply of the most potent material for mind related transformation. This probably has a lot of reasons for why this won’t work but it could be cool if there were a group trying to artificially change an aspect of magic weather it be through more magic or just propaganda.

2024-10-19 16:59:25 +0000 UTCIf the Archival spell just described is viable and is used, secert storage Glyphs could be directly sacrificed in a sacrifice circle of a different spell without the need to seperately rematerialize the stored item because the item has already been converted to it's magical energy... this would be quick , more efficient And less bulky than using physical components. Then spell circles could used in 2D... no need to rest a 3D beast core or other component physically on the sacrifice circle if one is in storage. BUT! if the Gylph was used up by a previous spell or activation and is empty the current spell would fail or consume other fuels or resources cause wild spell disaster..... 101 more ways to die... but usefull if you can keep track well enough of your stored inventory. I can hear the experts trying to decypher her spell arrays..Sacrifice of an Unknown Glyph! Impossible !!! OMG 🤣
Jim A
2023-06-20 11:49:19 +0000 UTCCreate an Archival Storage spell that de-materalizes items for cold storage.. then be able to use a secret trigger, possibly a secret, newly created Glyph drawn directly in the air using her hand like a writing utensil with application of Will as the ink to re-materialize the item(s) when needed... enemies can't steal what they can't see and isn't even materialized at the time of the search. Also it would lighten the load in her satchel. Kind of like a magical ethereal safety deposit box. She could re-materialize the item where ever she is, not needing to go back to the de-materialization location to get the item...if she is in a cell and has no conduit or other components except her Will and her Wits she could trigger the spell completion using only her hand as the stylus and Will to draw the Glyph resupplying her items. -This is NOT a folded space.. the item's mass and energies are mapped at the quantum level then converted into pure magical energy then imprinted on and temporarily stored in the custom Glyph created during casting, until it is called for by triggering the Glyph and then the stored magical energy is returned to its original State and is reformed using the quantum map directly into the casters hand or at the casters feet....this is a magical secret stash. Also this is one "thing" in and one out...not a duplication spell...due to conservation of energy. However the "Thing" could be a satchel full of items though. You can't duplicate items with this method directly, although with advanced study/spell design and local energy use parameters in the original spell that may be viable in the future . Maybe she needs to use the burning fingertip spell to draw the Glyph... That would be dramatic right, I don't think that burning finger spell really destroys the finger tip after all..that seems like careless spell design. Alternate triggers could be a spell, enchanted word, a chant.... if the Glyph is problematic. -The ability to securely store supplies in the "Ether" would be a great tool in her survival arsenal. The secret Glyph is an artifact. -After thinking a bit about this storage method it occurs to me the items stored will not age because they have been paused at the time of de-materialazation, potions will not age... like having a stasis field...Also the raw energy stored in the spell could be enormous...not sure if magical energy is the same as E=MC2 energy (circa 1905 BTW) . If the efficiency wasn't close to perfect the spill over could be devastating...a 1 gram paperclip =15 kilotons of TNT ... one Hiroshima. A 25 pound satchel would be 3000 Mount St Helen's 1million MegaTons... so a inefficient casting or retrieval could have "Bump". BUT that is if Magical energy relates directly to our Energy, if it has different characteristics at the quantum level, which I suspect it does because the artifacts in this story already store their energy in their glyphs... thats where I got the idea

2023-06-20 05:45:48 +0000 UTCI see it's to late to join in on the contest, but I might as well throw in a few ideas I had. The thaumaturges have a remarkably modern understanding of light and certain other topics. Beyond magically levitating oneself, what's the state of flight in the land? I haven't heard much of anything in that regard, but even if they're not rolling around with airfoils I could see hot air balloons being powered by whale oil or thaumaturgical flame hell, for a smaller one you probably wouldn't even need to have a ton of thaums to pull it off. I think five Haze war soldiers would have enough thaums to keep a large enough flame to provide lift. Maybe even a zeppelin, if you got one of the old fellas up there to power the thing.
Jim
2023-06-10 23:09:25 +0000 UTCI noticed that it is mentioned that potions are only good for so long.. So my thought was how do you dispose of these? Safely? Without wasting them.. So I Propose A spell that salvages / distills magical potions/materials/items into their constituent parts or concentrates the remaining "goodness" of the item into a usable derivative material for future potion making / spell casting / crafting. The resulting derivative/distilled material (essense?)may or may not have the same or similar characteristic as the original item, but is a useful salvaged/repossessed component (compost?) to be applied to something else crafted or brewed. This is NOT making a potion from a potion, it's a salvage operation.

2023-06-05 16:47:39 +0000 UTCSpell arrays that work like this are totally a thing, but "safe" ones don't actually try to affect the entire world. To avoid killing oneself it would need to be an affect that originates at the border of the Circle and NATURALLY degrades with distance/energy inputs. For an example, an affect that shunts all of the heat inside the Circle toward the outside.
Azalea Ellis
2023-06-03 19:10:46 +0000 UTCYup! This idea is actually mentioned...in Book 2 I think when S is researching binding magic in the library. It requires a goldfish and is likely to cause complications, even if they get the water out of their lungs before the goldfish dies, because most bodies of water aren't pure water, and our lungs aren't meant to filter out all the other shit and debris.
Azalea Ellis
2023-06-03 19:00:10 +0000 UTCThis is very clever, Jim. I'm sure horribly difficult and magically expensive, but not much different than using satellites in lower orbit. A plausible country-wide research and development goal funded by the government.
Azalea Ellis
2023-06-03 18:55:26 +0000 UTC"Also I can totally see a bold thaumaturge [...] attempting to go explore space" *cough*Myrddin*cough* You're right about the HRT/bini frogs, which was part of why I introduced them. The world is definitely heading in that direction, pushed avidly by those who care most. "I can certainly imagine a trans thaumaturge being desperate enough to try almost anything to modify their body how they want though." I can see that as well, and it would be a wonderful, important and driving motivation for a character. I'd love to read something like this. I was just listening to a podcast with Mal Cooper about writing transgender characters, but I don't feel like I have the necessary experiences or expertise to write those struggles authentically.

2023-06-03 00:19:24 +0000 UTCPutting a tank of water in the sacrifice circle to hydrate any organism inside the magic circle. Turning this into an artefact so you don’t have to constantly apply will. Walking through it after eating dried meat.
James Barclay
2023-06-02 20:01:37 +0000 UTCCreate a new and radical kind of artifact, One that when creating the artifact is complete, all the spell components & materials are physically consumed and resulting artifact is a only a "Spoken Word" without any physical item. It is literally a "Magic" word, magically enchanted or cursed - bound to an armed spell. This is a way to cast a spell without needing to setup a spell array or find an artifact in your backpack... Speaking the "Magic" word with the application of Will to provide targeting for the output, the energy and intention of the original spell used in creating the "Spoken Artifact"... The word (or phrase) chosen should be something that nobody knows... a made up word or something from a dead language or maybe unique sound. If it was a common word or name someone else or possibly anyone could trigger it... a funny thought, could be a curse -like attaching a flatulence spell to Professor Kiernan's or Lord Pendragon's name 🤔. This may be a one time use type of spell/artifact or possibly if the casting of the original spell prescribed it to use local energy to be provided from the users environment, heat/light etc. it might be able to be a multi use spell. It may be or may not be restricted for use by only the creator. A downside of this is that there may be no way to "disarm" it.... unless the loophole/disarming "code" was put into the spell during the original casting of the artifact
Jim A
2023-05-29 23:37:09 +0000 UTCAn X-ray vision spell or potion, yup just like Superman
Jim A
2023-05-29 21:38:20 +0000 UTCA spell or potion (artifact maybe?) to allow the caster to see auras for a short time ... these auras could be magical energy, Luck, Love, Goodness sickness/health, evil, truth, magical concealment , enchantments, magical enhancements. The spell/potion would need to specify what type of aura it is sensitive to.. of course
Jim A
2023-05-29 21:16:06 +0000 UTCThere could be a method where Spells are cast with an inverted Spell Circle, where the output circle IS the outside of the main circle (rather than inside the inner most circle) , the component circles are placed on the main circle and inside the inner most circle is where the caster and anyone/anything that isn't supposed to be affected by the spell stand. The circle is inside out... this way the output affects the entire world, and the caster is safe in the middle of the spell circle... Just a random thought. It could be useful, but all the safety's are off so to speak... could go very wrong

2023-05-29 21:07:20 +0000 UTCI apologize in advance I never know when to stop, I was introducing resonance as a concept to the group, a standard non-resonating spell circle could be used to identify and exploit the Physical resonance in an object , building or thing, causing it to absorb its special frequency and vibrate/oscillate until it "Breaks" like a wineglass breaking to a perfect note. This is only dangerous to the specific target. >I agree, You are quite correct vibrating spell components would be dangerous, the magical resonance I was speaking of is at the energy current level and not a physical vibration in the circle/components, so the resonance would cause circulating magical, electrical or magnetic energies flowing around the Circle(Circuit), and possibly through the conduit. -For increasing power output and a better focused power output-> A resonant spell circle concept would require special care with the circle design and to select very good/robust components to create the circle, because in a resonant circuit, whether electrical/magnetic or even Magical, the currents flowing in the circuit conductors (Spell circle/conduit or wires/windings/magnetic cores) are many times greater than a standard spell/circuit due to the "Q" Quality of tuning of the circuit - Q= 1 = normal no increase. A more focused better tuned circle would have a Q of 10-100 or much greater. The higher the Q the more focused the power, the less input it takes to cause the output BUT the currents are Q times the base Energy.... so if the normal Spell used 100 Thaums and tuned to Q of 100 it is circulating 10000 Thaums in the circle/circuit. It also is 100 times more focused energy than normal. A Crystal component in a radio circuit in the modern world runs a Q between 10,000 and 100,000- So conduits are crystals, huge currents are possible if used as a component =Exceptional outputs?.. and yes if you push it further than your components can handle it will come apart dramatically. Sorry for the long spiel, I see so many corollaries between the magic circle and currents in these stories to the physics and electronic circuits of our world. Building on Lodge/Hertz/Marconi research circa 1887,Telsa invented his resonating Telsa Coil 1895 ...perfect example of a simple high power resonant circuit... this is pre-1900 per the rules
Jim A
2023-05-24 04:18:28 +0000 UTCA Spell that makes things vibrate that causes resonance in some of it's components causing the whole thing to be extremely dangerous
WindQueer
2023-05-23 17:59:37 +0000 UTCA Minor Local Time Reset/Rewind spell (esoteric? or a charm for the charm bracelet?- maybe an artifact for his pocket watch?) that time jumps reality a moment (a minute or two?) back in time leaving everyone oblivious to the time warp except the caster who remembers the missing time... allowing the ability to "redo" something, great for gambling or dodging a spell/event. Maybe the charm/artifact could have a "Dead Man's Switch" on it so if she died it would rewind before she was dead and give her another chance... of course she would remember dying... not fun
Jim A
2023-05-23 17:36:43 +0000 UTCA spell to loosen soil ends up burying the caster alive when it creates quicksand like conditions. A shield spell creates a tight impermeable barrier that causes the caster to suffocate. Someone puts spell components in their body (like the raven queen) and the energy used by the spell kills them: maybe a shield.
Rick Angros
2023-05-23 08:46:11 +0000 UTCA water breathing spell that works well until it is removed then the person drowns because their lungs are full of water.
Rick Angros
2023-05-23 08:40:00 +0000 UTCA spell or new gained Will-Based ability of Astral Projection to be able to project the caster's ethereal presence to a remote location and interact with people there - like a zoom call for sorcerers - the remote location only sees the caster not their location. This will eliminate the need to kill Ravens for meetings with hostile parties. It could possibly look like a ghost to some people if they didn't know what was going on.
Jim A
2023-05-21 20:05:34 +0000 UTC"Moon-Bounce", I believe this world has a moon, so moon light communication - the ability to communicate via a shared view of the moon and the moonlight coming from it or magic reflecting from it. This Moon-Bounce concept could be used between willing parties or used to listen in on anyone or thing in full view of the moon. The distance to the Moon is fairly consistent therefore the entire land could be illuminated and would have the same delay and thaum cost to use. Spells could be bounced off the moon for greater and more consistent coverage - a divination bounced off the moon would have a consistent cost for the entire land .. distance wouldn't change... the distance is twice the distance to the moon (up and down) and everything is Line of Sight.
Jim A
2023-05-21 01:42:03 +0000 UTCA forced total heat exchange spell - between two targets (Enemies or things) the spell forcibly removes all heat from one target adds it to the other, incinerating one(+459 degrees k)and freezing the other to death (-459 degrees k). Two birds one stone. This may need to be esoteric or free cast. This is not sacrificing heat from one to heat another, it is simply moving it. The spell would require a small sacrifice of energy to facilitate the transfer...the input power is much less than the heat being moved
Jim A
2023-05-21 01:28:17 +0000 UTCA spell using an accompanying relic or item that would raise a golem of the material used in the relic, to follow and fight for / defend the caster. Thaddeus already has made a turtle golem so this should be possible- if the item used for the transmutation is magical the golem retains the effect.
Jim A
2023-05-21 00:59:01 +0000 UTCA targeted time warping spell that fast forwards time very quickly for the target that would make the victim decrepit & OLD - draining vigor and all strength- it would not kill but make the target very vulnerable. On materials they would be quickly weakened and then fall apart as with extreme age, and turn to dust. The effect on materials would be permanent, living things could "Heal" and after significant trouble regain their youth that was lost to the spell.
Jim A
2023-05-21 00:54:54 +0000 UTCFucking brilliant.
Stefanie
2023-05-20 19:48:52 +0000 UTCIt would be interesting to be able to cast while in the Domain of Dreams...possibly while dream walking. A danger would be if you are dreaming and you cast by accident
Jim A
2023-05-20 19:27:03 +0000 UTCCreate a cursed musical tune that causes the unfortunate person to repeat it over and over until they go mad, lose grip on reality or maybe just the spell they are casting... forget the most recent happenings and what they were just doing ... a way to wipe small new memories ("These are not the Droids you are looking for" type of thing). Whistling this tune you could walk through a secure area un noticed
Jim A
2023-05-20 18:53:19 +0000 UTCSet up a spell array that uses all the heat and light from sunlight in an area to heat up something with a high melting point continuously then use that to store energy for future spells. Actually an idea for energy storage for us as a sand heat battery.
Jett Hardin
2023-05-20 18:33:05 +0000 UTCA spell to neutralize any magical artifact (weapon only?)- this would discharge or detonate weapons... stun and other charges = zero instantly... affect could be completely silent or could be the total discharge of the weapons power on the holder of the weapon.
Jim A
2023-05-20 18:29:42 +0000 UTCA "WILL based EMP" bomb, A self referencing artifact that feeds back on itself until it "breaks" and causes the pulse that is felt when a sorcerer breaks. The pulse will put all magic users down for a time after the pulse. If they are casting they will lose control of their spell and there will be backlash from their spell(s). The artifact would require some sort of living magical creature as part of its creation sacrifice (Pixie or stronger).
Jim A
2023-05-20 18:26:22 +0000 UTCa spell that allows the users to siphon off and store "life force" or other energies or attributes from themselves very slowly over time into an artifact gem, like the gem of a ring or head of a staff or gem in the hilt of a knife/sword- a gem on a charm bracelet. The stored life force could be used to heal one self instantly for poisoning, serious wounds, very bad Will strain. It could be used to heal others at a lessor efficiency. The charm could be used to augment the wearer's vitality passively, also no need to trigger it if it sensed the user was in danger of dying or needed help. -This could be extended to a "Charm" bracelet" (or batman style utility belt 🤔) that has many different charms that passively store and augment the wearer's attributes by drawing power from the user and their environment during healthy times and applies those stored benefits when the wearer needs them... powers /attributes improved could be health (as mentioned), resistance to poisons, added strength, speed, LUCK, dexterity, an innate passive spell/skill ability,Will??--- the list goes on, another one of the charms could store energy from the previous listed "Leyden jar" spell. The slow charging of the bracelet during normal wear doesn't unduly affect the wearer, but will cause a noticed increase in need to eat and sleep if all charms were depleted at once. One type of charm could be a "warding filter" that absorbs bad things like curses or poisons, negative energies focused on the wearer (maybe even bad dreams?) before they affect the wearer, changing color as they fill up (say from clear to green/black). The wearer then would see they are in danger and adjust their circumstances to avoid the danger. The filled 'Filter Charm' of bad "stuff" could be used as a weapon against another... or a potent component for a spell/potion
Jim A
2023-05-20 17:42:30 +0000 UTCSomething I find clever is someone trying to sacrifice someone else's ability to cast. Perhaps this was done as research to try and punish powerful magical criminals. I'd imagine this was done after someone lost their Will after attempting to sacrifice something to enhance it. Someone else noticed that accident and thought it would be a good idea to forcibly *inflict* it on someone else. Basically trying to weaponize the failures of people trying to enhance their will.

2023-05-20 15:17:53 +0000 UTCA resonance spell or concept. Apply magic in a way that the target (or spell requiring power) is "tuned" to enter a ringing or resonating state, allowing pulsed power to be added in small steady repeating intervals and build until the target bursts/fractures or otherwise succumbs like a wine glass breaking to the correct tone. This concept can be used to boost the power output of a spell and reduce the thaum requirement by orders of magnitude if the "tuning" is done carefully. This is like pushing a child's swing ... only a small addition of power is required at the right time to make it swing higher and if the "push" is out of phase it reduces the swinging output....and kicks back to the person pushing.. causing "backlash" . Many modern systems in our world work this way.
Jim A
2023-05-20 13:01:53 +0000 UTCA Universal translator spell... or potion that allows the caster or user to read or at least understand a different language for a period of time.. could be an alteration of the proprioception potion ... allowing the two people to share one's ability to understand another language...maybe it could be also used to share another skill? Or shared memories?
Jim A
2023-05-20 12:36:50 +0000 UTCA Leyden jar spell.. the ability to absorb energy and store it in an object for use later... energy like a lightning strike or an attackers stun attack (any attack really) or even energy from a slow steady constant source like the movement of water falling or the wind over an object...the stored energy could be used like a beast core... possible this spell could recharge a beast core... the charged item could explode if the capacity of the object was exceeded or intentionally damaged. Some items would be better containers than others, for example a gem would hold many times what a piece of country rock of the same size would. It could charge a conduit to hold power also.. not sure if that's is useful but it would be a good container. This spell could be used to steal the charges from an opponents weapon and charge yours... stealing his ammo ;)

2023-05-20 12:30:17 +0000 UTCNow that Siobhan has had some in-depth instruction in Quantum Physics , Wave-Particle Duality (from Professor Gnorrish) and now knows that matter occupies mostly empty space and it has specific Quantum Energy levels (steps) where the atoms and electrons live, She can affect matter at it's most basic level and shift or rearrange it. -->>A "Matter Phasing" spell is possible that allows the user to shift an item's quantum properties/steps up or down 90 degrees to desyncronize it with the surrounding matter's energy steps and allow the caster to pass an item or themselves through a wall or other solid object without harm. It is analogous to spreading your fingers on both hands and passing them past each other...if your fingers line up on both hands you cant pass them through each other. This spell could be used to hide an item inside another mundane object... it would also allow the caster to bypass wards, as if they were a "Ghost" passing through ... care would need to be taken not to phase shift the quantum energy 180 degrees...the quanta would be in Sync but completely in reverse...a negative energy phase.. not sure what would happen... maybe a "don't cross the streams" type of event. That's an original Ghostbusters Particle Accelerator reference for you younger folks...
Jim A
2023-05-20 12:23:23 +0000 UTCChange your perception for limitless power. The circle isn't the small meter wide bit on the ground in front of you, it wraps around the planet and encompasses everything but that. Effectively giving you access to sacrifice the world's heat, light, blood, etc..., which is so massive you should never run out and people probably won't notice.

2023-05-20 03:46:45 +0000 UTCAnother blood magic idea:using another human being as a condium magic link(but no emotional feedbackback ) so that you can cast trough flesh but not your own. Another idea. More simple but establishing somthing like familiar /magic links between other mages to pool together their senses and will to create a artificial hive mind.

2023-05-20 00:40:51 +0000 UTCCursed Seaweed paper.. Curse some seaweed paper sheets so they are linked... in this last chapter where Thaddeus explains that curses bind spells/person/items, and that distance / intervening matter doesn't affect the link much at all. This would allow her to write spells/circles on the paper and place one(or more-multiples) of them remotely and be able to activate the spells from great distances by applying will/magic to the local piece of paper... like a remote control or detonator (if it was an offensive spell)

2023-05-19 22:02:34 +0000 UTCA Time Talking spell... allowing someone to touch another's mind in the past... not actually a two-way real time conversation more of a way to place a question or thought or compulsion another's mind in the past so they think of what you want to know, i guess you would be reading their mind from the past- They would then think about the answer or do something you would sense to get the answer you were seeking here in the present. The person in the past would not know they were coerced into offering up the information. -It could be possible to influence the past person's actions if the question imposed into their mind was troubling or exciting enough to them to make them do something different from the the original timeline...but this isn't the intended outcome of the spell but a possible consequence if used without caution. A paradox could be created if the past is affected to much by accident. The further into the past the more difficult it would be to connect to the person and the more power it would use. The targeting of the person would require an item of theirs from the time frame you want to contact them in. The past could be a thousand years or 5 minutes.... if you had the right anchoring item

2023-05-19 21:42:42 +0000 UTCCould you link together the thoughts of several thaumaturges through binding magic, kind of like how the Lino-Wharton messenger spell allows the user to control the raven? Either in a true hive mind sense where all participants lose individuality and a new being is created, or where one controls the other participants. This would make joint casting or split will casting way easier. Also I can totally see a bold thaumaturge making a platform with a movement spell to go up, loading up on beast cores, and attempting to go explore space, then running out of air, getting radiation poisoning, simply being unable to navigate reentry, or something similar. Exploration of the bottom of the ocean through submarines could be interesting too, since we know the Red Guard has air-recirculating artifacts. Uranium's radioactivity was discovered in 1896, and gamma rays from radium were discovered in 1900 iirc; is radiation known to the people of this world? Because if you can create complex illusions in visible light it might make sense to be able to create gamma-ray wavelength illusions that can blast an enemy, or radio-wave illusions for long distance communication. Maybe even an artifact that acts as a neutron bomb for the Haze wars. Or even just using a chunk of radium as an energy source instead of a beast core. Also, could you swallow or surgically implant a beast core or Conduit and then cast with it? With healing potions and similar magic, could you do organ transplants? Or even graft additional arms onto a person? Maybe even making the skull larger and grafting in another brain that can also cast (if it's the brain that contains the Will)? In the vein of body modification: I definitely think (as a trans woman) that an interesting avenue to explore would be potions or other magic for modifying specific gendered body parts for transgender people. I can see potions easily filling the role of HRT, especially since hormones are known already in this world (which we know from the Bini frog chapter). Modifications that necessitate surgery in our world could be more complicated, but certainly doable with magic (if not banned by the High Crown as blood magic). I can certainly imagine a trans thaumaturge being desperate enough to try almost anything to modify their body how they want though.

2023-05-19 21:38:26 +0000 UTCReasons why this is deceptively "safe:" it wouldn't kill men. Any male thaumaturge could use it over 100 million times a day without ever experiencing a negative side effect or infertility, so it could have been used for decades -or longer- successfully by men and considered a harmless blood magic...up until a woman used it too many times or when she had a limited number of eggs left. then she would have accidentally consented to sacrificing her own life force.
Stefanie
2023-05-19 20:31:21 +0000 UTCI don't see that this has been mentioned, but what about a spell or artifact that uses your fertility or reproductive ability as the sacrifice? This could work quite well for a man, even with frequent use, as the artifact would sacrifice the lives of his sperm, of which more are made each day. However, if this artifact was used by a woman, sacrificing a (viable) egg or two upon each use, it could quickly render a female thaumaturge sterile, and if she continued to use it without knowing about it, it could kill her by sacrificing her life force instead. This would definitely be categorized as blood magic, so it would be relegated to stories from the past. (I have been wondering if this is possibly how her amulet works, unless it is sourcing all of its power from the book... Somehow.)

2023-05-19 19:07:37 +0000 UTCAn esoteric spell or unique artifact that creates access into a >folded< space i.e. Panic Room/Sanctuary existing outside of the current plane, between planes or possibly inside the plane of Darkness / one of the mirror/shadow worlds apparently existing in this tale, allowing her to enter it quickly and safely from anywhere she is, and when leaving allow her to exit to any location she has ever been(or seen by magical means). This other worldly folded space/pocket world is not geographically tethered to the current world so travel elsewhere when exiting would merely need her first hand knowledge of the destination to locate the exit point. The Santuary would be tethered to her . This "Space" would give her a safe place to store important stuff and place to escape to, to avoid a curse/monster/battle or just hang out and study privately- it also would give her the appearance to teleport/shadow walk which is considered impossible by all the experts. The magical cost of this would be higher if she exited the Sanctuary in a different location due to the elevation difference.. due to conservation of energy like using energy to lift the vault... This special folded space may need to be generated initially and separately once... requiring whatever the power needs are regularly required of a space bending spell and some unique components from the referenced plane (Mirror/Shadow/elemental or another plane orthogonal to the mundane plane.) It could also be an existing "Gore" in time and space - a Gore is a previously unknown/unexplored un-mapped /unclaimed/uncharted place in the world (Universe - Multi-Verse?). Old time map makers used this term -Old English gāre "triangular piece of land", (in space it could be 3 dimensional ) which occurred between known mapped/surveyed areas.. legally - officially belonging to no one -a lost place. Maybe an extra-planar bubble?

Is it just a vegitable? Does it have sapience without a concious (AI like)? Does it act like a wild animal? I personally like robot option, but all work. More interestingly, does CPR work at all in this world? Why would a soul stick around for a proscribed amount of time post death at all? Is there a brain damage threshold? If so are people in a vegitative state soulless?

This may be a project that takes years as you strain to lower the temperature inside by smaller and smaller increments. At some point, you'll approach absolute zero and some weird stuff is bound to happen. If you draw from thermal energy for the sacrifice, will the box eventually contain a substance that cannot be sacrificed? Will you eventually start drawing from the inherent energy of matter and consume the air itself? 2. If Sympathetic Magic is based on common perception, the collective understanding of concepts wearing down paths that make certain spells easier to cast, could an unscrupulous mind mage start mass brainwashing people to change those perceptions and thus change how the magic works. If I go into a village and swap their understanding of the colors red and blue, Could I then cast sympathetic spells that need the color red using something blue. 3. If Germs and Viruses exist in this world, could you transmute them to change their symptoms. Could you make a Flu that made you stronger instead of weaker, or only infected certain people in certain ways. could you imbue them with potion like effects that would last until your immune system fought them off or you got healing. 4. Do animals have will? Can you improve an animal's brain to the point that it would be capable of activating a simple wand or other such artifact. Could you train a pack of alchemically modified dogs to shoot spells at your enemies, or activate alarm spells if they detect an intruder? Could you give a magpie a silver divination spell and let it go around and pickpocket people?

2023-05-18 19:42:43 +0000 UTCAlright, quantity over quality here. 1. Instead of buying a single, expensive conduit, just use multiple cheaper ones. //I don't remember why this can't work 2. If you lack will for a powerful spell, just make sure you've got the theory right and get bunch of first years to help. //Siobhan helps in Liza's spells so could work? 3. Use sacrifice to filter one substance out of another - say, sacrifice 'poison' from drinks to make sure they are safe to drink. 4. Self-Hypnosis Sorcery - Personal training room in your sleep / when you close your eyes. //Siobhan can block dreams, so maybe possible to influence in another way? 5. Makeup illusion - spell that controls how you look, where it seems you're looking, your mimicry etc., all while looking wherever you need to look. 6. Sacrifice dust in a room. 7. Sacrifice mosquitos in the room. 8. Movie Goggles made out of illusions as a much cheaper way to make fully immersive illusion. 9. Sound Sorcery - from farting noises to impersonate others' voices to blowing up people's eardrums 10. Potion making manufacture - Siobhan always says how it's not difficult to follow a recipe step 1. Make wands so the process can be done by non-thamaturges. You can hire people for brewing then. step 2. Automate process completely, all it needs is a supplies to transform them into potion batches step 3. Sell the process on how to setup similar manufactures step 4. Profit 11. Contribution point card counterfeit for luxurious life in uni 12. Perfume Sorcery - a kit of substances for use in enhancing illusions. 13. Fake-news using camera obscura on illusion magic 14. Simulating Camera Obscura using thaumaturgy - for easy recall or copying scrolls/books/visual information discreetly. 15. Sacrifice water to quick-dry laundry. 16. Dry-Freeze and store food by sacrificing water, air and heat from sealed container. 17. Use combination of camera obscura and illusion magic to make flip-book stories. 18. Make camera obscura effect into spell, make it into a rechargable wand/contraption and give it to a spy-familiar. 19. Same way wands are charged with spells, develop more generalized spells that can be charged with universal batteries / charges. 20. Invisibility + body double illusion to mess with people. 21. Try to imbue items with spells in similar ways that potions are, in order to create artifacts. Instead of casting and sustaining invisibility, make a spell which bestows the property on a material. 22. Spell that speeds up the perception so that while you can think normally, the world does not move on until the spell loses its effect. 23. Use sorcery to cutoff circulation from part of your body before casting spell through it. //Aberrant appendage! 24. Use plants/animals as conduit. //Aberrant familiar. Aberrant garden. 25. Connect radiant plane with another plane, all through a double portal. See what happens. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALnPVybD9X8) 26. Instead of using some expensive continuous flight spell, just launch yourself up high enough and then use glider to get wherever you need to get. 27. Become an exorcist, after realizing there's not much work to do, use illusions to convince people/their houses are haunted.

2023-05-18 19:15:14 +0000 UTCYeah I was wondering if the circles have to be “physical” or even visible to other people. Borrowing a bit from Mother of Learning, what if you consume a potion that gives you a minor mental enhancement that enables you precisely visualize circles? Basically, your brain will perceive a circle that doesn’t actually exist, essentially an illusion that only applies to you.

2023-05-18 17:00:09 +0000 UTCBuilding on the ideas around sympathetic sciences, i'm curious about some possibilities: if the strength of metaphor derives from population level beliefs, id wonder what impact a concerted PR campaign would have on specific magics, eg could a PR campaign that reinforces a given connection between two tertiary concepts bring them to a secondary or primary relationship, strengthening or making easier the magics involving those concepts. if the sympathetic connection is based on individual perception, which seems more likely than societal understandings as the higher order associations between concepts are made tractable by force of individual will, what impact would hypnosis, or the kinds if mind magic the red guard uses have on an individual practitioner. i can imagine a few scenarios, eg Mage uses self-hypnosis or a mind-magic spell to make tractable sympathetic spells that otherwise would not be possible for them. perhaps a struggling student uses a mind magic spell to help them use tertiary sympathetic connections, but is then unable to use those concepts in standard applications and ends up failing. ie they break their metaphorical frames of reference and become unable to use standard magics. or a researcher tried using mind magics or hypnosis to study break events by associating concepts with trauma and then having subjects perform magic using those concepts. they died when a break event did happen and due to the nature of the synthetic traumatic response the aberrant created was the first to affect perception.

2023-05-18 14:37:19 +0000 UTCCould one use an illusion to draw a spell array? Or since it's known that a spell can be both triggered and can create/transmute matter, could a spell create a spell array, then trigger that spell array (or create it such that it's easily triggered)? Is this a grey goo scenario? Or could a spell array create a new spell array which is ever so slightly different than the previous spell array, and in that way very rapidly "evolve" an ideal array? Maybe have some heuristic which speeds up replication in "successful" arrays? Sort of a paperclip maximize? Since Siobhan's paper arrays have proven so useful, is there some hidden gotcha in them which is the reason spellbooks full of arrays aren't common? Maybe as simple as spontaneous activation when layered atop other printed arrays, though that would be easy to munchkin.

When one of the mages attempted to connect to the network to find out the reason for the birds death he immediately went crazy. Later it was speculated that he died due to information overload. On a sidenode I feel like this idea could work by limiting the amount of information that can be transmitted over the link at the same time. It might even be possible to circle spell effects like Siobhans sleep spell through a network like this essentially negating the downsides for the sacrifice by splitting the burden with hundreds or thousands of other sacrifices ... of course there is a lot that could go wrong there as well.

Similar attempts usually failed due to blood rejection or septic shock, which he cleverly circumvented by careful experimentation and an alchemical treatment of his own body to align it with the organ. Unfortunately for the recipient it worked, and apparently massively increased his available magic. This shortcut, however, did not improve the nobles will in any way to handle the newfound power. Either from a permanent magnet or the earths field. Earths field would be weak but you can redirect that to concentrate in an area. Large concentrations of metal direct it. If a bit of uranium/thorium were to be in the sacrifice circle while you were sacrificing light and heat you would get more energy. In metallic form the are very warm. 2023-05-17 23:39:44 +0000 UTCSome magical extrapolation: sympathy seems to maybe be based on the collective expectations of magicians/people about what works. Obviously this has been discussed as a possibility in S's head. Conjecture: things like "the word" and "the circle" are also as modern conceptions, influenced by collective magican/people expectation. IE, the glyph for movement isn't the glyph for movement because a specific set of lines inherently means movement, but because people think it does. This is all based on a few things but includes the ideas about spells being easier or harder if they are old/new. So now far afield of what is established: what if how good you are at magic is also influenced by how good people think you are at magic. Obviously it's only a very small part, Liz can be grand Master level without anyone really knowing it, but she did that by lots of hard work (and there are people who know she is good). So what if you wanted to be way better at magic, obviously put in the work, learn things, grind your thaums up. BUT also, separately, spread a lot of rumors about how you are a super badness sorcerer, possibly using a constructed identity such as "myrridin" or "the raven queen" and then as people naturally believe you are a vastly powerful and skilled sorcerer, Magic will be even easier for you then it would have been if you were just some person who learned magic.
