Illustration Vote: More Grimoires or Character Portraits?
Added 2022-06-23 21:53:13 +0000 UTCHey guys,
The first draft of A Binding of Blood's audiobook is going to be finished soon, (and that unedited version is going up exclusively for patrons to get early access to) and will require me to listen through it for any errors or necessary tweaks before publication.
Generally, while doing this, I can take the hours that are impossible to spend writing to do visual work like illustrating. In the past, I've worked on illustrations for the grimoire entries, or some cover art.
But I recently had a conversation with a reader about what some of the characters look like, where I mentioned my interest in doing more illustrations of the characters.
And then I discovered ArtBreeder, which uses AI to create portraits (and other stuff). It would allow me to potentially cut my time for creating illustrations down by many hours, creating a base portrait there and then painting over the top of that to make tweaks and get details and stuff really accurate.
But I'd like to spend my limited illustration time doing what people are most interested in. So would you like more grimoire entries, or to see some illustrated character portraits instead? (Hypothetically, if you prefer portraits but also want grimoire entries that I no longer have time to do, I've been considering hiring those black and white sketch-illustrations out to another artist.)
In either case, please feel free to let me know the topics, spells, or characters (child versions, anyone?) you'd most like to see, in order from first to last.

Thanks for the feedback, James! That's definitely something I could do in the future (or commission if I never end up having time to do myself.)

2022-07-07 22:36:15 +0000 UTCI’d kinda like to see rough portraits of citizens to give an insight to the social structure, could make a decent way of filling out the world. Not an important thing to make, especially not until actual characters have been properly drawn, and naturally the quality doesn’t matter as much either, but that’s just my suggestion. Would go well with snippets of architecture and fashion to articulate the times, the sort of things you see in sketchbooks of concept art. Also Lacer in war garb, but maybe that’s more appropriate for when we get what I assume is a Lisa and Lacer wartime backstory reveal. So many mysteries, thanks for keeping us intrigued!

2022-07-01 00:04:48 +0000 UTCThanks for the feedback! I'll keep this in mind, but for the moment it'll probably be smaller pieces focused on portraits. Including full body and backgrounds makes an illustration take hugely more time--too much for me to complete while listening to a single audiobook.

2022-07-01 00:04:27 +0000 UTCI’ve always been a fan of group photos. Kind of like a snapshot in life where all the main characters are interacting a bit.
