Id like to challenge myself to make my art look more like this moving forward. i want to give all my characters unique silhouettes that are appealing and toony while still being detailed enough to pose in any interactions i want them to be in.
just so this isnt a repost from twitter heres some of my thought process:
I've been looking up tons of character sheets from classic disney cartoons like the great mouse detective and robin hood. Ive played with the zootopia style before and i like how every species has a unique and identifiable leg/foot type and i wanted to give that to my characters. i like drawing shoes as part of outfits so i didnt commit as much as they did but i think i still got the point across.
giving Mr. P tiny rat hands and feet not only help him feel more rat-like but i think it makes him look cuter and chubbier too. different hand sizes is another good idea to add variety and i really like the idea of certain characters having hands big enough to cover another characters entire face
usually when designing bodies i look at photo reference and while thats something i still did here I wanted to boil down the entire body to a single shape with their head on top. i probably wont change most characters heads that much because Ive already designed everyone with unique head silhouettes in mind.
Mr. P is shaped like a water balloon. Jax is a top heavy bag of flower but more rectangular. the crazy neck and shoulders were inspired by robin hood characters and the shape mirrors his cheek fluff. It gives a lot of energy to him which is good since he's meant to have ADHD and is also a very intimidating bully when he needs to be
something else i tried with these thats new is using a dark-mid grey tone for sketching. im using the default colored pencil brush on CSP to achieve a more traditional effect that matches the old fashion animation style guides i was using as reference. i went back over the eyes and some other features with pure black to add contrast and i really love the result. might keep that one too.
