Liz Ard's canon Timeline

Hello! Today I'm going to put all my videos so far in chronological order, and share some curiosities on how they fit together, my ideas and headcanons for my characters and talk about her journey with G'raha a little bit. :)

Also because I didn't have stuff to fill in all of the 15 minutes, I'm animating (in real time) in the background, so you can see how it looks without speeding up the video. I actually move things verrry slowly. :P

My Lizard isn't exactly a complete self insert because I don't see her as myself, but I want her thoughts and feelings to reflect my personal experiences with the game! To be honest, when I first started playing, I didn't even think I'd get this attached to her and think of her own story - I just created her as a vessel for me as an MMO player. Her appearance is half based on my (now 2nd) favorite character in all of fiction, and half how I wanted to look like when I was a teenager :P I used to dye my hair black and everything.

Then of course I did and now I try to think of everything so it fits both me as a player and her as her own character.

For example, I talked about her origins and her tribe, and I thought her being silent when young and being someone that expressed herself more with action than with words fit both the silent nodding WoL in the game, and the fact that I make short animations - meaning I always focus on trying to get my ideas across with movement and actions rather than dialogue.

Or the fact that she wanted to be a botanist at first, is because I really like gathering in the game, and botanist is usually one of the first things I will level - I like it a lot because it's one of the things we can do ingame that actually makes me walk around the game maps and enjoy the environment, interact with it and see what the items each places give me are. It would make sense it's my character's way of exploring the world, right? And the fact that her tribe was the one from Reunion, would make it possible for her to meet Eorzeans, to be interested in trade, crafting and gathering (and yet forced to hunt and fight - I mean, they would see her talent and need someone to go out there, right?)

There's little details I couldn't include in the video but I thought it was getting...kinda long. :x So if you're curious about anything else, I'm always happy to talk about them here or anywhere <3

And please share your own stories!! How do you view your own? Do you have anything that I can read or watch about them?? I love how the FFXIV community is supportive of everyone's OCs and headcanons. It's something unique that I never saw in any other fandom before, and it reflects how everyone's experience is different, but at the same time we're united by the love of the same story.

Oh by the way, when I was collecting the video footage for this, I came across some interesting localization difference that I posted on bluesky about. I had to stop everything to share it! :x I love this little mirroring scenes, and it makes me sad that it would be SO EASY to keep it in the EN text and yet they didn't! Whyyy????? It's the little details, you know!!!!

...anyway :x

Thank you for watching and for your support!

No worries Liz! I'm happy to add you, thanks :D

(so sorry for taking so long!! I didn't get the notif for your reply T_T) Ohhhh I think I understand it now!!! In this case, knowing G'raha I'd definitely interpret it as praising and charming :P Y'shtola and Urianger calling themselves like that sounds so cool, too!! :o I don't remember any equivalent in either EN or JP! I wish we could get the ARR quests voiced :') there's a few clips here and there of Yuma voicing them in events, but it would be so cool to hear the differences of interpretation in all languages! He does sound like a great fit for the Exarch!! So it seems like they also adapt the localization to fit his own style, too! That's pretty nice!!! I wish more people talked about it and shared clips of his German (and french!) voices, it's so rare to see it. I'm really glad you're sharing those~ And I love that version of the Inn Scene as well T_T "I want you to live" is such a G'raha thing to confess, and it's so meaningful as well. I love it, I wish they'd kept it in all of them. I'm honestly not a fan of the "baggage" thing they added in EN - it makes it less direct than all of the others! Oh and about Haurchefaunt there's an old video from Zepla that compares some of the lines, if you didn't find it already it's a good watch if you're curious about it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfmrNsuxsoY It changes his personality by a lot imo. So I guess German went the EN route? Maybe it's because they thought people wouldn't think it was as funny as for JP? Worst case scenario would be they changed because he acts like this with WoLs of any gender...but I guess we will never know. Changing this much between languages though is one of the things that makes me paranoid to check all of the differences :x They also changed *THE* quote, which in EN is "A smile better suits a hero", and JP I think it's something more like "As I thought, your smile is splendid", if you go with the "Splendid" translation of his catchphrase! ...I could spend days talking about translation stuff :') If there's more german G'raha lines you like best and you don't mind sharing them I'd love to hear it!!! Since patreon isn't reliable in notifications, feel free to add me in discord! liz_ard_xiv. (I mean, if you want, it's okay if not!)

I do agree with the Yuma flavour, haha. He sure is more youthful and I think it's really fitting for G'raha. I also like his acting in other anime as well :) But, as I don't understand japanese, well... I don't use it, sadly. I am always happy to hear him in your videos tho! In matters of Hauchefaunt I... actually didn't know there was a contoversy about him until I googled it just now. I do remember him being fond of the WoL but I don't remember him acting out of line for a knight. Emmanellain is the one that loves all the ladies I think. So more like the ENG version. The "my love" ("meine Liebe") is something kinda tricky to describe I think... Generally you would call a close and trusted friend "meine Liebe" which would be translated as "my dear" and you would call your female lover "meine Liebe" but it would be translated as "my beloved". Y'shtola and Urianger do call each other "meine Liebe/mein Lieber" in german as well, meaning "my dear friend or colleague". :D However, its uncommen to use it for someone you don't know. It's often used in a (friendly) competition - or to build trust and show that you don't have bad intentions when meeting somebody new. Let's say, a new guy shows up at work and you have to show him how everything is done. You would say "Well, my love - let's get started!" "Nun, mein Lieber - fangen wir an!" Or you can use it to scold somebody as well, in a polite way. (Which sadly is how some people read the first few G'raha lines, like he is praising you so much - it comes off as dishonest) In current times, many young girls might also put you in your place if a guy calls them that out of the blue so... its really open for interpretation if you don't HEAR it as the tone of voice also matters. He is not making fun of you and it is meant in a friendly way, leaving you the shard and all. But it also can just be a flirt. It's...kinda cocky, to put it nicely. And people either find that charming or can't stand it. However...his entire ARR character is surely more youthful and... cheeky as the exarch or the endwalker versions of G'raha. His voice actor, Marcus Off is an older guy and really fitting for the exarch... but it surely wasn't how I imagined Rahas voice back in ARR (as none of the crystal tower cutscenes are voiced, i think). So I agree it's more of an exarch kinda character, while Yuma is a better fit for ARR and endwalker Raha. I do prefer german Exarch over the english one tho. Endwalker Raha is not really as "easy going" as he was in ARR, but he is also not as wise or intentional as the exarch in his choice of words. And aww, the french post is cute! It's kinda close to german one. He says "What i want to say is.. " ( instead of "It is surely to much for any one woman" - as he is implying that already in the sentence before) That's also is how you would start a cliché kind of confession haha :D But to be honest, you really would have to read into it, as it's kinda clear he want's to talk about something different. He continues: "You don't have to carry this burden alone. I want you to live - I want you to share this weight with me, a little bit." He also says: "And I want to keep traveling with you. Be part of your next adventure, and all those that may follow." which i think is a bit cuter than the english line ("To the ends of the world and beyond"). And we keep the "Sweet dreams" in german as well.

SundaeOwl

Choosing the cuter line is definitely the way to go~ I'm very used to Yuma's voice (might have noticed I'm a huge fan), so to me Jonathan Bailey is a different flavor or G'raha :P I always feel like Yuma is more youthful-G'raha inclined and Bailey is more on the wiser/Exarch-inclined side if that makes sense? I theorize that the EN text could be more custom-tailored for him because of his voice and style, like we associate with Bridgerton. How does he sound like in German?? His tone of voice and word choice? :o I'm glad that as far as I know, both JP and EN do a great job and are hugely popular on both sides, and it's fun researching and knowing how it's like in every language...but at the same time I kinda wish they were a little more alike, so everyone could have the same experience of the character no matter the language, if that makes sense? For example, did the German version had Haurchefaunt more like JP or EN??? by the way I also know nearly nothing about the French version, but I did see a post about the Inn Scene in French having some really nice lines as well: https://bsky.app/profile/mmhberry.bsky.social/post/3lfaec3yqoc2v ! I didn't know of the "my love"!!!!!!! I like the idea of him coming back to that in a loving tone later~ would be meaningful and cute! <3 Though at the same time, so does that mean the German text is very directly mocking, like he isn't impressed/interested in the WoL in the Black Shroud? Does it change his intentions, or it's still friendly? I'm definitely checking out Teronimus to listen to it more, thank you! If it's okay then I might ask you about specific lines in the future then, that would be wonderful <3 thank you so much!!!

Liz Ard

Yeah, the german version really is dead on the internet. And I've also heard the ENG is quiet different at times. I always go back to watch voiced cutscenes in ENG as I do enjoy the blessing that is Jonathan Baileys voice :D But they are different more often than not so...I just choose the cuter one as my canon line haha ^^° I am happy to say that the mirroring from Azys Lla and the Black shroud is still present in german, so that's a win, as exactly the same words are used (just changing the enemy names, as you are fighting different things in both scenes) :) Additionally - Raha does call you "my love" instead of "my friend" during the crystal tower raid quests. (But it isn't meant in a loving way, it's a matter of speech in a kinda mocking way...). Later on they only use "my friend" like the english version. I like to think he keeps calling us "my love" but obviously the tone would change 🙂 If you are interested in any particular line, I'm happy to look it up. I also use Teronimus on Youtube to quickly check for german quest texts, as he is the only guy out there i know of, who has streamed the entire game in german.

Thank you so much~ I'm glad you enjoyed it!! Ohhh I'm so happy to know he doesn't say it in German!!! I'd love to know more about his german version, sadly I know nothing of the language so it's a bit harder to search for it, and as far as I've seen, it's not that common to find it on youtube either! I usually assume other languages try to keep it closer to the original meaning from what I've seen in the past! EN localization specifically seems to have this history of changing a bunch of stuff to "please western audiences" so I get a little paranoid and compare everything that I can T_T I got this habit from finding out many years ago about how the EN text tried to tone down my favorite ship... In the JP text he does say it's "unusual for us to call him" though, which...AGAIN, WHY!! Sounds a little better than "I can't remember the last time you called me" but still. Maybe it's to reference the MSQ that is going on and he wasn't part of it? Still, my WoL would be calling him frequently and keeping in touch no matter what! German is my favorite for this quest now. Something I always remove from my translations as well is the "my friend" that the EN includes, which doesn't have any equivalent in the JP version and for me it kinda feels like they're force-friendzoning him :') Whenever there's a text from a quest and dialogue that I use in JP in the videos I try to translate it more directly from the JP text, that way I can compare the differences and remember how it is...and I always get that impression that the EN makes him sound just a little more distant. ...but in the end he is lovable in every version, and they didn't change him extremely like Haurchefaunt, so it's not that bad! In the end I think it's fun comparing them all. I get super attached to the details, though :x I was seeking for more of those mirroring things as well, and something I've noticed is that the Azys Lla scene text in EN is different from the ARR original he was replicating! It was obvious so we didn't lose the meaning, but in the JP one, he also uses the exact same words he did in the Black Shroud! I feel like Ishikawa really likes doing stuff like that and is really careful with the words used, but it's probably hard to keep it translated the same in every language...

Liz Ard

That's really cute :D I love the backstory for Liz in ARR, really fits well. However, I was shocked to hear that you had to edit the linkpearl video text... I'm using german text in game so I figured the dialogue was actually pretty close and just thought it to be the canon english one. In the german version the line "I can't remeber the last time you called me" does not really exist, so I'm glad its implied the WoL and Raha are somewhat keeping in touch I guess, haha :) So I was also hunting for the other translations you posted about, but these are lost in the german translation as well, sadly. No mirroring.

Thank you so much for listening!! I'm really happy you enjoyed it~ Ohhh I love your ideas, would love to see that document! Send me the link and I will read it (little by little if it's that long :x)~ and of course I'm always looking forward to seeing more of their story on your videos too!!!

Liz Ard

This was incredible to listen to while I was working on some stuff! I loved every bit about you and Graha's story!! Thank you for putting this together!! 😄🙌 I have an entire story planned out for my characters, Fioh and Shizuka, and an entire document I wrote, but I'd have to explain more in our messages or something! It's way too long to put here haha
