Nuki News #90 - ¿Comprendo Español?

Happy Four-Thirteen! I have a non-business related goal I didn’t get to talk about in last week’s Nukinews; I brought this up in an ‘Ask Artie Anything’ from @Gorgilisk back in January you can read here:

From 7th grade to 11th grade, I’d actually taken Spanish classes. Though I wasn’t proficient, by the end of it I could read in Spanish, but didn’t have the ability to speak it or confidently write in it. This is basically knowing it on a ‘passive’ level. A decade has gone by since then and I actually kinda forgot about it due to not ever needing to use it, until I came across comments on a Youtube video(probably ASMR) where a number of the comments were in Spanish, and I realized I was able to read and understand them! I guess like many people, I just pushed memories of grade school behind me, haha.

With remembering I knew some of the language, I was realizing some of my friends spoke it as a primary language(Some of them fellow tanukis might I add, haha). Further, a couple people were commenting on my art both on FA and Twitter in Spanish. I felt that I shouldn’t put my younger self’s knowledge to waste, and connect with people through it as well!

So to that end, I’ve taken on using Duolingo! I knew one of my friends DragonTzin used it to learn German, and he’d been so kind as to help me with refreshing my memory of Spanish, so I’d taken it on myself to learn with it. Just this week I’d actually gone passed day 100 of consecutive practice, and have gotten more confident in speaking with it and writing with it. It’s kind of like learning to draw too though; you have peaks and valleys of how you feel about it. Some days I get brave enough to write in spanish, other days I go “oh god I don’t know enough” and don’t want to try. No matter what though, it’s important I stick with it, even if it’s little by little, or as Tzin often says ‘poco un poco’ I’ll improve!

So I do have a bit of a ‘end of year’ goal, and that is to write a NukiNews in Spanish! I’ll likely have an English translated version too, for those who wouldn’t be able to read it, but still I am to do it!

Another thing I’m doing, or want to do before the year ends, is finish playing through a game entirely in spanish. Current game of choice has been Pokemon Omega Ruby, though emulation errors may press me to use a different game that’d be easier to use, I chose that one as I hadn’t played it before. But it’s a fun way of testing knowledge of a new language and learning as you go too, since Pokemon games are generally simple, gameplay wise and language wise. It was suggested by Chu, author of the webcomic Slightly Damned, as they did that for learning Japanese. Anyhow, that’ll be it from me this week!

Gracias por leer! Adios, disfruta la semana!
Thanks for reading! Goodbye and enjoy the week!

I'd really like to get back into learning Spanish too! Especially working on the SlumberTown Spanish adaption with my translators. It surprises me how much of that Spanish I still kinda ended up retaining, and it's interesting to me to see my story come to life en Espanol, hehe~ Playing video games would definitely be another good way to interact with it! Especially with a Pokemon game you've probably played a lot and memorized pretty well.
