I do like the symbolism of Hornsby saying the coin he thought was gold was basically the equivalent of a nickel. He sees the shiny potential in these other smaller communities, and Pamela is quoting their worth at face value. But he’s still holding tight to the nickel.

2025-08-06 17:58:19 +0000 UTCThe troopers were sent to deal with a horde. Suddenly the horde is at Hilltop, but it's ok the troopers are there too to save the day... Like Lance said, he thought his coin was gold but it was just gold plated. Inside it was just an old nickle. Maggie doesn't trust them. She sees the sales pitches, the displays of heroism, the gifts of food. They're TRYING so hard to convince them this is something good. They're putting on a show to get more people, but the reasons why aren't completely clear yet. Why do they want alexandria specifically? Hilltop? Just for the nice beach? What will he ask for in return? What happens if they refuse? Does he cut them off? Get them hooked in a state where they have to rely on the commonwealth resources then they ask for something in return and they can't do it either literally or morally. Then they get cut off? All CW provisions and help taken back? Do they kill someone who tries to stop them? There's too much unknown surrounding it and maggies lost so many communities already i think she doesn't want to take the risk. She'd rather try and fail on their own rather than rely on the CW and get backstabbed just to lose it all against an unbeatable army. What Maggie did for other communities wasn't quite the same. Not every community she helped died. What she did was find struggling communities and teach them to be self sufficient. They didn't ally, or make deals. She taught them how to help themselves and them moved on to the next group. It was just meridian where she decided to settle with them before it was taken by the reapers.

2025-08-06 17:44:53 +0000 UTCHis intentions behind caring for them weren't pure though. He needed them to provide for him. He needed them strong. I don't think his people loved him haha, they kneeled to him out of fear and tried to escape but got brought back. They lived under fear so they showed him respect to avoid his fury. The only ones who would love him are the type like Simon or Arat who were given opportunities to get away with evil acts.

2025-08-06 17:10:26 +0000 UTCLove that the 'villains' are most often people trying to bring back 'the old world'. It's how Negan described the Saviors and Sanctuary "an economy" is what he called it. People were not treated fairly at all but the funny thing is is that Negan would always have even his 'workers' who were treated the most unfairly get medical attention from an actual doctor. He actually put Simon on a mission to steal Hilltop's doctor so the Sanctuary still had one. Negan was a bad man when controlling the Saviors (absolute power blah blah) but there were always moments of humanity and making sure people were safe (especially since Rick's group murdered many of his people in their sleep, which any leader would do something about). Not saying I think he was completely justified, not at all, and he kept people under his boot, but by and large, no one seemed to be starving at the Sanctuary, and the people living there loved and trusted Negan. Gabriel actually sees it firsthand. So the 'villains' are different but similar. Negan actually had more people in his inner circle than I think Pamela does, so it's no wonder her and Hornsby have such power in their community. Killing Negan (at THAT time) would have just martyred him and then Saviors fight (what happened effectively in season 9). It's so interesting comparing. Especially since Negan is a dick to your face while Pam and Lance are all about putting on nice happy faces, as politicians often do. They're only slightly better at that act than Gregory was xD
