At the end of season 2 while Reiner, Bert, Ymir and Eren were in the trees, Reiner starts earnestly talking about how he thinks they may get a promotion for their actions in the castle raid. After Bert tells him, "You're not a soldier reiner, you're a warrior." And then I think it actually flashes a scene of Marco getting eaten and his reaction. Ymir says that Reiner has been undercover so long he truly believed he was a soldier fighting for humanity so he could spare himself the mental torture of lying to everyone and ended up creating a separate identity. His reaction to Marco being eaten is the other personality "taking over" and questioning why they're letting Marco die
