Mulholland Drive is Confusing as Hell
Added 2025-01-23 04:40:35 +0000 UTCWe actually just got to watching Mulholland Drive tonight and it confused the fuck out of us LOL, what an experience of a film; I'm just curious to hear about what other people have thought about it after watching it or anyone wants to help clarify it as well!
Curtis hated it because we didn't get it, so maybe some context would help him change his mind; I'm kind of in the middle. Like I feel like I might have gotten it but certainly I'm still fucking confused. Either way, it was a fun ass reaction; good choice guys!

Going in with expectations of a coherent plot is just setting yourself up for disappointment. I enjoyed parts of the movie a lot, great acting in some of it, beautiful sequences, scary sequences, but in general I like following plots in movies so I'm not a huge david lynch fan. These types of artsy films I will watch from time to time but going in prepared to be bored and/or confused.

2025-01-23 15:23:38 +0000 UTCThere's a lot of basic explanations online that will get you there, but that's not the point (in fact, somebody kind of gave you one in the comments, but that's only an explanation of the plot, not the themes). You guys are supposed to ENJOY not getting it. It makes rewatches way more fun trying to tackle the mystery each time instead of just memorizing the film. Think of films (or art) like video games. People who like David Lynch enjoy playing films on the most difficult setting because the regular stuff is too easy (similar to playing a video game on a very-easy setting that's too easy to be fun). Approach it from that angle and as you explore more of his work, you'll enjoy it that much more. Again, you're not supposed to get it on the first try. It's meant to be treated like a serious literary novel like you'd read in school that demands serious analysis and not something you can walk away from knowing all the answers. In some ways, looking up an explanation for the film is kind of disappointing because a lot (but certainly not all) of the mystery is gone and so much of his films are all about the mystery. My serious recommendation is to watch Blue Velvet. It's an intro into that way of investigative thinking, but it offers more answers for an easier watch. But if you want to go FULL BLAST, watch Eraserhead. It will EASILY be the craziest film you've seen for the channel and maybe life.

The first giveaway is that you see the POV of resting on a pillow before the opening credits. From there the movie plays out as an ideal dream / delusion of Wattsβ character. She is the newcomer in Hollywood and befriends Rita. The friendship turns into an ideal romance between the two, as they try to solve who was behind Ritaβs unsuccessful assassination, and what the mystery behind the blue key is. Diane is also shown to be a capable actress and catches the attention of many producers. Meanwhile we are introduced to other characters at random that have little to do with the main plot. Sort of like how a dream shifts to unconnected thoughts. The director Adam, who is looked down by Hollywood and is considered a joke amongst his peers. Or even the Hitman who is horrible at killing people and constantly fucks everything up. All of this is an ideal perfect world in Dianeβs dream. Unfortunately that is not reality. In reality she is a failed actress who is coping with the breakup of Camilla (Rita). Camilla has left her for the Director Adam, who in real life is a well respected director contrary to Dianeβs dream. She decides that the heartbreak is too much for her and hires a hit man to kill Camilla. But unlike in her wishful dream where the Hitman is a total screw up, in reality he is very good at killing. And unlike in her wishful dream where Camila survives an assassination, in reality she is murdered. The hitman leaves his calling card that the deed is done - a blue key. The same blue key that was left as a mystery in Dianes dream. Also the scary bum behind the diner that pops up at random throughout is the guilt that keeps seeping into her ideallic happy dream. The nightmare that is a reminder that she did indeed kill her lover, and that all the sappy happiness going on is a delusion to hide from reality. Tl;dr - the movie is an idealized dream of a failed actress who killed her lover and is slowly coming to grips with the guilt.

2025-01-23 05:09:47 +0000 UTCI had to watch this film several times and really dissect it. The genius of this film is that everybody who watches it takes away something different. This is my favorite Lynch film. With that, here is my take. This film grapples with two story lines within the same story. One is the dream fantasy of Naomi Watts character Diane. Diane is the real world character. She is dreaming the fantasy of her being an entirely different person... "Betty". In her fantasy, "Betty" rescues "Rita" from her pursuer and they fall in love and end up together. In her fantasy "Betty" is a great actress and is going to make it big. But in the reality story line "Rita" is infact Camilla and she is the actress who is making it big. She treats Diane like shit and sleeps around with the director... and others. Diane is in love with her, of course, and when Camilla decides to marry the director... Diane decides to hire a hit man to kill Camilla. He's the guy she meets at the diner, that tells her she will find a blue key when it's done. The blue key even enters her fantasy too, very symbolic. Diane's fantasy is what starts the film. So when we start, we are already in the fantasy story line. We just don't know it yet. We go back and forth between fantasy and reality. It's very clever but tough to put all the pieces together on one viewing. There's way more layers but I don't want to give it all away. Hope this helps a bit.

It's like the gateway drug. Diving headfirst into Eraserhead or Wild at Heart or Mulholland Drive or literally anything else is like going to Uganda and trying to have deep conversations with people on the street (The Elephant Man is great but doesn't count, its based on a play and very non-Lynch)

I don't get it either but I enjoyed just the experience of watching it. It's like a glimpse at someone's mind. There's somethings in each of our minds that if other people saw they wouldn't understand but they make sense to us because they are personal... So this movie is like that... Just be thankful you haven't seen Eraserhead (yet...)
