Development Diary #56

New development diary. We have important stuff to announce :)

Many of you may already know that Adobe flash is dying. And it seems Adobe has strong intentions to finish with it by the end of this year.

We weren't too worried about this, because standalone versions of flash should keep working as long as we keep the standalone flash file with us. But thanks to the information provided by our patron Eric, we know that Adobe's plans are a bit more agressive. They intend to block flash content for sites, remove download links for any version of flash (including the standalone links), and of course disable plugins for all the browsers.

It's a bit frustating to think that for example Space Paws won't be playable on any site, so everyone will have to play the desktop version without any more alternatives. :/
That's why we've been searching for alternatives. Unity was an option, but learning all its code and software from zero when we're already deveolping a story, working on the art and all that....is a bit too overwhelming, tbh. Especially if you are more of a writer or an artist than a programmer.

That's why it's very likely for us to move to renpy (if you don't know what's renpy, it's basically a good engine for visual novels). This change provides us the next improvements:

-Screen resolution will likely increase from 1600x900 to 1920x1080 (better quality)

-You'll be able to adjust volume easily.

-You'll be able to quick save and quick load a game. You'll have a lot of save slots as well.

-Dialogue text will display progressively.

-There'll be a backlog (so you will be able to check what they were saying before a decision)

-'Ctrl' key will skip text.

-You'll easily hide the interface.

-Installation woul be easier. Just extract and play

-It's more likely to eventually have an Android version of the game.

And more or less that's all. The rest should be similar to what we could do with Flash. The only bad side we've found is that online version are based on html5 (that's a good thing) but it seems they are not so stable, at least with heavy stuff. So we'll probably do a lite version for web (with static images instead of animations, or just fewer animations, we'll see). Nothing new, because Space Paws online version also had its limitations.

Likely we'll try to make this change for this next update. It's not being easy, but we think we can do it. It doesn't make much sense to keep developing it with flash if we have to make the change someday anyway. It shouldn't take us much extra time because it's especially delaying the storywriting work, but well, the story can remain a bit longer only in my head, I guess lol. Plus, who doesn't love to have more extra work during summer? Haha :P

Just keep in mind that. We'll try to make it look as good as any update we've done so far, but this is a new engine of a new game, so please don't be too harsh if something is a bit unpolished ^^'

About the status of the update, here it it the progress:

-New characters: 4 out 5 done so far

-New H-scenes: 1 out of 2 done so far

-Sex Battle: created, all animations of this update done so far (11 animations)

-Backgrounds : 4 out of 8 done so far

-Battle animation soldiers: 0 out of 3 (Currently working on it)

-Skills animations: 0 out of 4 (we'll go for it after having the soldiers done)

-Battle revision: it was already built on flash. The port to renpy is quite advanced

-Other Cg's: 6 out of 9 done so far.

So basically, I'd say that we're beyond the halfway of the update. We've already did a good amount of work, but there's still work to do.

That's all for now. Be good, stay safe and enjoy summer!

Why not produce a demo version that contains just the first arc or 2 and then point new players to the desktop version? It’s not much different when I found Space Paws and other games in the alpha/beta stage.

Myriad

True I discovered Space Paws on NG, but since becoming a supporter here on Patreon I have always downloaded the PC version. It wouldn't hurt to see how many more of your supporters did the same.

BulldogB

Maybe I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure that the most of our patrons discovered Space Paws thanks to a browser version. Online versions are a good way to advertise our projects. Itch.io is the only site that we could say that the desktop version is making some advertisement work. All the rest come from WPG, Newgrounds, gamesofdesire and sites like that. We'd be very relieved if we could only focus in the desktop version because online versions always need some modifications and that takes us time from developing the game. But if we want to keep the same quality, buying stuff for the game, etc...we need to keep growing. Especially after finshing Space Paws & covid patrons lost.

Taifun Riders

You seem to care a lot about browser support. Is this for you or us consumers? If the former, then by all means go ahead. If the latter, then why not start a poll to see how many people actually care about it. I personally prefer to use standalone versions of games, and don't care for browser support. Perhaps you can save yourself some headaches down the road if you don't need to focus on browser support.

Lord Voldemort

What we've seen so far is: we need the similar effort to get something in Ren'py than in flash, except the Visual Novel part. That part is easier and looks better in Ren'py. Before going for Ren'py we announced some important changes on the battles and we built it on flash. And now it's almost finished also in Ren'py (yeah double work! That's how I like it). So I'd say we got to do exactly what we wanted there without limitations. We needed to change some things here and there (like pics resolution, how to show an animation...), 'cause renpy works differently. But nothing more.

Taifun Riders

I guess Ren'Py is not a bad choice, especially since it's in Python and Python is easy to pick up. How would combat system, etc. be translated into Ren'Py engine? Afaik Ren'Py is really great for text-based (choices and paths from those) rather than as an interactive game engine.

Tommeh

That would take a lot of time! Space Paws will remain in flash and we'll secure that the desktop version will be always working no matter what happens with flash. This is only for Shuggerlain.

Taifun Riders

Sorry a little confused so are you guys going to "update" Space Paws and bring it over to html5 and Ren'py? or is it just going to be flash only?

Sean Malloy

Games like Harem Hotel and Waifu Academy use Ren'py and have animation videos using I think Koikatsu or something like that to make them.

Eric

Yes. We can animate with sprites and also add videos (that's how the H-scenes were made with flash). In fact, now we can use .webm instead of flv, which is lighter, and that's something really good now we want to add lots of animations for the sex battles.

Taifun Riders

Will Ren'py support animations? So far I've only seen static images for Ren'py

Bunduru

Yes, we felt Ren'py is powerful enough to not only develop visual novels, but at the same time it makes a bit easier that part of the game. Android and IOs ports are also posible, which is also great. We really think that with a bit of dedication all should look at least, as good as flash builds.

Taifun Riders

Adobe argues that flash was a common target for malware and all that. But instead of trying to make flash safer, they sold it to everybody since 2005 to now destroy it. Flash is more than a broswer plugin. There're great tv shows like Wakfu or My Little Pony that used Flash. I really think that if adobe cared a bit more of flash, we'd have flash for years and years.

Taifun Riders

I can't disagree more with Adobe's decisions, but sadly there's nothing we can do. Ren'Py is a really good choice for the kind of games you want to produce, i.e. visual novels. I'm looking forward to playing this new project when the first version releases! Keep up the good work, as always!

Johnny Mind

seems really stupid doesnt it? getting rid of adobe completely then blocking it for everybody else? its retarded. we all use flash players for so much. its like with them getting rid of headphone jacks for phones or disk players for computers. millions of us still use it and we arent ready to give it up. sorry guys this is worse then we all thought. you guys still got my support no matter what! stay strong Riders!!
