Taylor makes multiple references to her being put up on a pedestal by matty healy but also emotionally abused by him as well in TTPD. Most notably in this song and in MBBHFT. In this song she references she would have died for his sins is a reference to how she was willing to sacrifice her reputation and her career to be with him because a lot of the public and even her own fans turned on her because of his racist remarks in the past. This was also the inspiration for but daddy I love him when fans tried to create a petition for her to dump him (stupid I know) “sanctimoniously performing soliloquies ill never see, thinking it could change the beat of my heart when he touches me.” And in whose afraid of little old me “the scandal was contained, the ballet had just grazed, at all costs keep your good name.”
