Added 2023-12-29 19:11:52 +0000 UTCMost depressing news for the holidays… Santa Claus, Arizona is no longer. Opened in the 30s and lasted until the 70s. Was operated by Mrs. Talbot who was 300 pounds (which was very unusual back then, so it is mentioned every time she is mentioned!!) Jane Russell threw a Christmas party there in the 50s. Robert Heinlein wrote a short story set there!!! Yes, they actually served reindeer steaks. A few dozen people actually lived there. The pictures of ruins above Lo took when we visited a few years ago. It was for sale for $400k HAHA. Out of their minds!! But still… always had the fantasy of reopening Santa Claus, Arizona. Some things are just priceless!!! (And yes, it is still a census designated area on the map, even though the population is zero.) But someone did eventually buy this beautiful piece of history between Kingman and Chloride… and raised the entire thing. Nothing left at all!!! This is the stuff of nightmares to me… If people do not step up to protect our precious American history of ducks, decorated sheds, and roadside attraction architecture, we are destined for mass homogenization. Is there a quirky abandoned building in your town?? Buy it!! Restore it!! Make it your life’s mission!!! Or the Santa Clauses of the world will be no longer… 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
