Sugar Cookies
Added 2025-02-20 23:22:34 +0000 UTCWhen I joined the army and went through basic training the Drill Instructor came in and asked us if we wanted to make sugar cookies. I got excited at first because I was really hungry. But something told me that it was a mistake to answer the DI. I kept my mouth shut, as did all of us on the female barracks floor. The DI screamed this time asking WHO WANTS TO MAKE SUGAR COOKIES.?!
He looked at me, so I timidly said "I guess maybe I do Drill Sergeant!"
He grinned and in a low villain like voice said "good, good."
A few minutes later we were outside getting rained on doing physical training out in the combatives training sand pits. Sand was everywhere.
After a 20 minute workout commonly called "smoke session" we we all wet and covered in sand.
We were run back to the barracks and told to jump in our bunks with our sandy clothes on. Each morning I woke up early to make my bed extra neat as we were inspected on how we made our beds. I cringed as I pulled the sheets back and jumped in bed all sandy.
The Drill Instructor then said we had one hour to clean the barracks with no sand in sight.
He then left.
We all first got in the showers. Then cleaned the whole barracks. It's part of why I am a neat freak now.
That whole memory seems like a scene out of a movie to me. Particularly Star Ship Troopers. Although no guys were in the shower with us and nobody got shot while in training haha, but I do love that movie because I can relate to the training.
Years later on a nude beach in Miami I was all sandy and in the water but this time it was under much more pleasant circumstances. Similarly I showered at the beach to get all the sand off too, and those were coed showers.
