Behind the scenes of Funfair: 2015, page 1

Wowza! Holy shit, it's Funfair! (I hadn't actually come up with a name at this stage of writing, so this was just "The Banjo & Conker comic"... I'm not good with titles!!)

I actually tried to make a comic for the "late 2015" script. I made it kinda far, for how short the comic was going to be at first! It was going to be all black-and-white, so I wouldn't have to draw backgrounds all the time. I used to think about my own well-being, who knew!

So, fun(fair) fact... That security officer you see on the first panel was at some point going to be an important character. At the time I was writing Funfair, I was very big on Adobe Flash games (Flash hadn't been discontinued yet), and I had the idea of making this comic interactive! Like a sort of... visual novel, kinda. Can you believe it!

When Banjo would tease Conker, you would have the option (as Conker) to shrug it off and continue the story, or get randy with him. The latter option would get them in trouble, and this security officer (who presumably keeps an eye on our suspicious duo) would show up and kick them out.

So, it would be a comic with branching paths, kinda! You could shrug off Banjo's teasing the whole time and just end the day without having done anything fun.

I'm sure it would've been fun, but imagine how much work that would've been! That would've been like... 50 pages instead of 30! Who even has that sort of free time?

Oh, that's for sure. It might seem like a cakewalk when you see an actual visual novel, but truthfully it's an enormous commitment.

HolloNut

Dang, visual novels are a huge commitment from what I've seen, but that would have been really interesting! I think that would have been a big project to tackle alone though!

Tsarin

The more I think about it, Banjo did come out of his shell a little bit at the end of Funfair. He showed some naughtiness that I don't think he would've done earlier in the story (e.g., page 86).

SUPEREEVEEMASTER

Yeah, for sure! I made sure to keep that in some way, because it really showed off the somewhat dysfunctional friendship they had at that point. It shows how far Conker has fallen...

HolloNut

Yeah, for sure. I could believe that he'd grow out of his polite, "good boy" personality just through the sheer exposure to Kazooie, but I think Banjo would remain true to his roots and want to make his family proud. That, and being mostly uncorrupted by the world outside of his family's forest... Banjo's just better as an innocent, gentle giant. ♥ Kazooie completes him by being a raunchy, loudmouthed bitch. ♥ (But they're only friends, of course~)

HolloNut

You who else can't get over him? Conker. :)

HolloNut

I can't get over naughty Banjo ❤️

RandoBear

Banjo being an innocent-minded, sweetheart instead of a somewhat saucy guy who tells middle school jokes fits him better and so I'm glad this interpretation of him didn't make the finalized version. Maybe it could've worked later in the story as Conker's mood brightened and the two learned more about each other.

SUPEREEVEEMASTER

Ever here I absolutely love how you crafted the dynamic between them. It feels both true to them and immensely entertaining, something about the vast contrast between them really works.
