Theme Switcheroo [Krunch] - "So, meet my dad..."

So, there he is! I hope Krunch's dad is everything you wanted and more... We finally found him after weeks of searching, and naturally he'll be incarcerated as soon as this reunion is over... (By the way, this reunion is not canon!)

Krunch is the youngest of six kids; some are iguanas, and some are crocodiles (like his mom). Generally, reptiles-birds-mammals can only reproduce with members of the same class, and that's why Krunch's dad isn't the same species he is. It's fairly common for species to couple like that, and the result is usually a toss-up between the dad's species and the mom's species, rather than a mix of both. Now, taking Krunch as an example, he still inherited his dad's gender, and several traits of his (green scales, stern expression...), so he's not just a copy of his crocodile mom.

Even before Krunch's dad abandoned his family, he wasn't the best guy to have around. He regularly berated his wife and children, took his family's savings for himself, was largely absent... So, him leaving and never coming back was actually a pretty good thing for them.

Though Krunch couldn't care less, his dad now makes a dishonest living, overcharging people for cheap equipment - pools, garage doors, kitchen appliances... He doesn't usually stay in one business for very long.

Krunch tries his best to avoid becoming like his dad. With all of his siblings off doing god-knows-what, he's the only one left to take care of his mom. She's a sweet, older lady who would "make a living" by doing favours to wealthier men (usually widows), in hope to marry them and save herself from poverty. But, between her partners ultimately rejecting her and her kids showing up to start trouble, she ended up getting hurt often. Krunch cares too much about his old lady to let her get in harm's way anymore.

Little lore dump, but hopefully that gives you some context on his family situation.

I'm sure he had a few rough spots as a kid that were caused by his family situation, but he managed to mature fine, it seems... Granted, he visibly didn't become family doctor, but he could be off worse!

Krunch is a great example of kids being able to be so much more than their parents. He's a good kid and I'm glad his dad's out of his life.

Maybe not a chromosome strictly speaking, but rather most of a parent's DNA that makes up their species is passed down to the child as a chunk, whereas finer traits are mixed together with the other parent's DNA. I think species do need to have distinct "pros and cons". Sure, a lazy cat won't win races, and "sloths being slow" is a preconception that doesn't always hold true, but Olympic sprinting would certainly be dominated by cheetahs, jaguars, and antelopes.

I imagine that there's a chromosome that determines one's species like there is for sex. Perhaps I'm more willing to push real-world species boundaries to make all creatures equal regardless of their appearance. For example, a sloth can run just as fast as a cheetah. Species essentially replaces race in my world.

That's correct! It would be strange to have a bear hatch from a bird egg, after all. And, at the same time, despite the sheer diversity of species in the world, people won't feel absolutely compelled to mate with members of their same species. That said, some species of a same class may have difficulties bearing children if their genes are significantly distinct (for example, elephants and mice), but it's not impossible. I'm sure that, historically, it wasn't socially accepted to build relationships with other classes, because ultimately no child can be conceived (much like same-sex relationships, and significant age differences). This would have created racial segregation that lasted for a very long time, until recent decades when people became more open-minded and less insistent on procreation.

HolloNut

If I understand this correctly, two mammals of different species can mate and have children but a mammal and reptile cannot.
