Basic Exposure Editing

Skip to 1:15 for the 7minute tutorial

From phone pictures to portraits with high end mirrorless cameras exposure is the key fundamental. Your exposure is captured and then further enhanced in post. I always say pay attention to your key light or main light source, followed by any other lights either designated or practicals, then account for your camera settings based on the look you are going for, lastly add your artistic touch in the editing process. Protect your highlights, don't crush your shadows, while enhancing your midtones.

Here I quickly show a rough edit on Adobe PS using Camera Raw, a curves adjustment layer, and finally I add further contrast by dodging and burning (highlights and shadows) The goal is to ensure your subject "pops out" or does not blend with your background.

Don't think you can't take artistic photos on your phone, or that you can't edit phone photos using PS or some other app (I'd recommend PS or LR)

I hope this helps
