Honest update on the Engine switch to Unreal

Heya! Bear here.

We are switching engines from Unity to Unreal.

I would consider myself a professional Unity developer. I've been working with Unity for over 10 years now. I've worked on many games, both commercially and privately. From educational medical VR simulations to mobile idle games for a company I once worked for. I've seen every side of Unity. I know every tool, every window, every button, every trick.

Switching to Unreal, I am a beginner again. Yet it seems like the right choice to us.

The tools Unreal has are pretty crafted exactly to make 3d games. Everything is geared towards that and it shows.

However, everything is different from Unity. Some things are vaguely similar but all the processes are different. Most things are already pre-made. Wanna fade to black in a cutscene? There's already a thing that does that. Wanna add pathfinding? Characters already have that baked in. Wanna make a character look at something? There's already a node for that. Wanna make hair have bone-physics? There's already logic for that.

A ton of things that we'd either have to buy or hand-code in Unity are just baked right into the Unreal engine. This is great as we don't need to re-implement any of those things, but also a bit difficult  because we need to learn the "unreal-way" of doing everything.

Right now I'm re-implementing dialogue and cutscenes. Learning the Unreal way of doing hundreds of little things like how to move things correctly, how rotation works, where to use scripting and where to use pre-made stuff.

This takes time. And that's my main concern.

We are going to work as hard as humanly possible to get you all a playable version and I hope we can do so before you all grow bored of us not pushing new gameplay updates.

I hope you can trust us and will decide to support us through this engine change.

As always, your support is what makes any of this possible, thank you. β™₯

Honest update on the Engine switch to Unreal

Comments

Considering the scope of this project, thrown in with the engine-switch I think things taking some time is understandable for many of us. AND while I am in no way familiar with game development (I usually make industry controllers do shit in C++ which is pretty much as far away from game development as one can get while still being a dev) I think in the long run this will allow you to do amazing things in this 3d game and any that may come after.

(Sorry for the long comment/rant) Honestly if I have to wait a little longer for an engine change then I can wait as long as needed. Your game already shows great promise and switching to a new engine is understandably a challenge but all I can think is how much better off your team will be without the threat of unity pulling the rug out (again). I look forward to seeing the progress you all make on this project and I look forward to the day it is completed and in amazing shape.

Yeah that definitely part of our decision...

Thank you β™₯

With the recent shenanigan with the Unity, I understand it would be safer to chage to UE.

Icthultu

You all take your time to get familiar with Unreal, i can wait :)

Lyk

I'll add that we dont mind waiting, since we know you do good work and very open about what you do and why. πŸ‘

β™₯ Thank you for the kind words

I think most of us understand why you're making this change. It isn't exactly ideal for anyone, but it's what has to happen, so get through these growing pains and get back to the fun stuff!
