Hey everyone,
I wanted to share some of the ways I consistently find amazing models to bring my photographic visions to life. Building a strong network of collaborators is key, and these are a few methods that have worked well for me:
Where I Look for Models:
Local Hashtag Hunting: I often search on social media platforms (like Instagram) using location-based hashtags. For example, if I'm planning a shoot in Los Angeles or Orange County, I'll search for things like #LAmodel or #OCmodel. This helps me discover models actively working in my area.
Learning from Others: I keep an eye on the work of other photographers in my local scene. If I admire their images, I'll sometimes check out who they've tagged as their models. This can lead to discovering talented individuals I might not have found otherwise.
Online Creative Platforms: Websites like Kavyar and ModelMayhem are fantastic resources specifically designed for connecting photographers, models, makeup artists, and stylists. They often have robust search filters to help you find exactly what you're looking for.
Local Facebook Groups: These can be goldmines! Search for groups with titles like "[Major City] Models, Photographers, Actors, MUAH" (the order of these words can vary). These groups are often filled with individuals looking to collaborate and build their portfolios.

My Go-To Message Template:
When I find a model whose look resonates with my upcoming projects, I use a simple and direct message like this:
Hey {insert name},
I love your look and think you'd be perfect for some of my upcoming shoots. Hoping to shoot with you soon,
Ryan

Pro-Tip: If you have a specific vision for a shoot, attach a mood board to your message! This helps the model understand your creative direction and see if it aligns with their interests.
Embrace the Numbers Game (and Patience!):
Don't get discouraged if you don't hear back from everyone you message. You're going to get a lot of no replies, and that's perfectly normal. Keep putting yourself out there!
Interestingly, I often receive responses months later with apologies for the delay and enthusiastic interest in collaborating. So, don't completely write someone off if they don't respond immediately.

For Photographers Just Starting Out:
If your portfolio is still growing, I highly recommend focusing on Facebook groups initially. This is where I've had the most success finding models for TFP (Trade for Print) collaborations, which is a great way to build your book and gain experience.
Hope these tips are helpful for you all in finding amazing models to collaborate with! Let me know in the comments if you have any other questions or your own go-to methods! π
