Act 10 - Part 1
Mel
“Whoop, there she is,” the demon’s voice echoed in Mel’s mind. “Damn, Mel! She’s even cuter than I remember. Okay, don’t forget, play it cool. You don’t know how she feels about you, and there’s a high chance that you’re just cruisin’ for a bruisin’”
As they so often did, Mel tried to ignore the snake’s voice, but they couldn’t prevent their worries from boiling up.
Though she was right - Rosemary did look even cuter than they remembered.
Her hiplong, curly, strawberry blonde hair was braided very loosely and hung over her shoulder, held together by a dusty pink ribbon, as if she had been perfectly prepared for this reunion. She wore a vintage looking dress in the color of the ribbon, over it a cream lace cardigan, a crocheted shawl and an old leather belt, together with posh little shoes that looked antique. She was a treat for the eyes. It seemed that Rosemary really knew what suited her and as if she was born to look that way.
Her cheeks and the tip of her nose were naturally blushing - something that Mel really liked about her - and so was her mouth. It looked like a soft airbrush paint on a porcelain doll with adorable freckles, not like proper lipstick. And of course there were these big, curious eyes, with those long lashes; one icy blue, one mahogany. Currently they were staring at her, while she eagerly walked down the big set of stairs.
“What… kind of look do you think that is…?” Mel asked, whispering, so that nobody nearby could hear them.
“Phew, shit, no idea. She looks kinda shocked, bub.”
Mel subconsciously clenched the bouquet a little harder.
“So she does,” they agreed.
When the young woman reached the last step and started to run towards Mel, a strong urge to flee arose. But they fought it.
“Melodie!” Rosemary cried out, and then, in the next moment, almost made Mel fall over.
She had flung her arms around their neck.
Mel was dumbfounded. They had anticipated half a dozen possible scenarios, even going as far as maybe a shy kiss, but not this sort of reaction. This, somehow, was much more intimate than a kiss. Feelings overwhelmed them. Even the snake was speechless.
Rosemary was clinging hard onto her, pressing her soft, small body full front onto Mel.
“I thought I’d never see you again,” she said, and her voice sounded as if she was about to cry and scold Mel at the same time.
“Now, now, my little dove. I’m giving shows all over the world, I would’ve been close to you sooner or later.”
“That’s not what I mean!” Rosemary called out into Mel’s sweater vest, and this time there definitely was some sniffling, “I thought … I thought you didn’t want to see me”
Until now Mel was standing there with both of their loaded arms a little apart from their body, to give Rosemary room for her close hug. But now they put down the snake cane to gently wrap the now free arm around the upset girl. The cane remained standing upwards on it’s own.
“I can assure you, there wasn’t a single day I’d thought that way. On the contrary, Rozemarijn. I was very eager to see you. It pains me that I made you feel this way. My apologies.”
Rosemary let out a little scoff, pulling Mel closer. “You could have called. You didn’t even call once.”
Mel went silent and hesitated for a moment before answering. “I will explain. But maybe let’s escape the view of prying eyes. I would like to take you somewhere, but I fully understand if you’d want to talk here. Then I just ask the receptionist if there’s a free lounge -”
“No,” Rosemary interrupted them, “It’s okay. I’ll come with you. How long ‘tilwe get there? And how much time do you have?”
“We will be there in a few minutes. And as for time… my day belongs to you, little dove.”

Act 10 - Part 2
Rosemary
Mary reluctantly let go of the tall magician, while trying her best to swipe off her tears.
This all was so much more overpowering than she could’ve guessed. She now felt embarrassed about her outburst.
When she parted with her she couldn’t help but notice a slight curve under the layers of Melodie’s fabrics, right at her middle. It was nowhere near the second or even first time they met, but definitely more protruded than the last time.
Great. Now she wasn’t only embarrassed, but also angry at herself for focusing on this whole affair again.
No, Mary. This wasn’t the time.
When she looked up she saw Melodie smiling warmly, and it swiped her right back into here and now.
“Would you accept these as an apology gift?” Mel asked and held the spray of flowers in Mary’s field of vision.
They were beautiful up close. From far away, they had looked cream-colored, but proximity revealed that the color gradually got more of a tender pink towards the center of the flower. It fit Mary perfectly.
"I'll accept the flowers. As for the apology - we’ll have to see about that later on.”
“Fair,” Melodie said and nodded. “Then let’s get ourselves out of here. Beautiful hotel again, by the way, this Balzac. You really like your five-stars, don’t you?”
Mary felt embarrassed again. “It’s not exactly my choice,” she commented, giving no further explanation.
Melodie thankfully didn’t press any further and guided her to the entrance.
Mary wasn’t even surprised when she saw another classic car parked there, in mint green. This time, she even recognized the model.
“A VW Beetle, right?”
Melodie smiled. “Absolutely correct. 1952, one of my favorite models.”
She opened up the passenger door for Mary and let her get inside.
The interior of the car was cozy. It made her feel like she could take perfect naps on hot spring days in there.
“I have only one request, dear,” Melodie said, while leaning with one arm on the top of the car, slightly bent down to look through the open door. She looked even taller from this perspective. “Would you please wear this as a blindfold?”
She gave Mary a piece of long, black velvet.
Mary observed the fabric in her hands, then looked up to Melodie.
“You are aware of how this looks, right?”
That seemed to throw her off a little. She cleared her throat.
“I am now. I beg your pardon. You don’t have to, but then I have to take you somewhere else.”
“Is it part of a magic trick?”
“Yes.”
Mary felt herself getting excited. Apart from small, little tricks like the rosemary bouquet she never had participated in Melodie’s magic properly.
“What if I cheat?”
“Then you’ll ruin the joy of illusion and break my trust.”
Oof. For some reason the second consequence sounded way worse.
“Okay. I will wear it.”
“It won’t take long. Promise not to cheat?”
“Promise.”
