Weekly Update - 5/3/23

This happened.

FWIW, I stand with the WGA, and if you're at all wondering what writers are on strike about, you can read loads about it, but thank you to our SAG-AFTRA brethren who are refusing cross picket lines. It doesn't affect what I do here, at least until someone's trying to license one of these stories for adaptation to another medium. (Which, y'know, hasn't happened yet but I've learned to never say never.) For those of you who say strikes don't work, here's a list of what previous writers' strikes have gained writers over the years:

Basically, the number of people who seem shocked that you can just choose not to be fucked over by late-stage capitalism is absolutely telling. And all of this came out on the same day as a story that found 300 children were working at McDonald's illegally, including some as young as 10 years old, who were sometimes working until 2 a.m. Insert "This is fine" meme here, if you like.

Anyway, enough about all that ugliness. Still behind on a few things, but am working my way through individual commissions that are still owed in addition to putting out new things.  Since last week, I posted new stuff in lots of various storylines - the newest chapter of QT2 dropped today (it was basically ready to drop late last night, but I wanted to do a final edit pass when I got up this morning, in which I added the joke about the airplane, which made it ALL worth the wait), CARP 5, BB 28, and the first chapter of QT: Aisling's Antics. The commissioner for QTAA read the second chapter of it yesterday and was delighted by it, so I feel like that's in good hands. Since I'm getting caught up on commissions still, I think 5/5 will be the next chapter of The Devil's Details while I finish up the chapter past that one for its commissioner.

Still two days left in the poll, but it looks like Before The Storm is likely to be the next You Decide choice from the Tier 4+s, so that'll be 5/9 barring a last-minute upset. I'm considering just doing a new chapter in all the stories that haven't been updated in a while this month, but we'll see how I feel about that. The other option is that I can just consider them unsuccessful and either close them off with a final chapter to bring it to an end or let them quietly die off in the night. I'm too attached to BTS and Threadbinders to just kill them off outright, so those two I may just put on mandatory appearances every couple of months, but if stories like Si Verax Sum and Janus Coins aren't working, there's no shame in just wrapping them up. SVS was never intended to be a very long form story, and I'm still wondering if the draw of the original If I'm Honest was Harvey, Deke's perspective, the way the story was written (1st person POV as opposed to 3rd person POV) or some combination of all of the above. Polite thoughts are always welcome.

Somehow stuff didn't get sent to the public sites last week, so this week'll be a double send to them. The public release schedule is currently as follows: 5/6 - The Threadbinders 5, C.A.R.P. 2, 5/13 - A Pack Of His Own 1, 5/20 - Quaranteam 2:1, 5/27 - Morgana's Gift 13, 6/3 - Seven Secrets Of Mr. Magpie 3.

Anyway, that's all the news that's fit to print. As for music for today, I'm wearing a t-shirt today for a band that lots of people have just forgotten about over the years, but if you're looking for something wild, you should definitely consider Pop Will Eat Itself.

I think the issue you are running into is having too many good stories. I would honestly vote for any of the stories in a vacuum. I think some of the stories benefit from momentum of prior frequency or where they are in the story. For JC and SVS, their downsides are that JC is not as unique feeling as your other stories, SVS just seems to bog down a bit and also suffers from comparison to IIH.

Don Alejo

What drew me to IIH was the first person perspective, of Deke discovering the new world of magic and Harvey's power. Not something that could be repeated. SVS needed to be something new, and it was, with us, along with Harvey, discovering the new world of the Roman empire. Unfortunately, that exploration is less of a fit for the sort of eroticism you are writing.

Alex Borders

Although I always vote for CARP, I'm glad smaller stories get a chance to shine.

Dinosaur Dude

the draw was totally Harvey!! and please don't let SVS or JC die, especially not SVS!
