The me from when I watched this the first time would agree with you about senior idols entering survival shows that’s meant for trainees. But now, while I still kind of agree with you, I sympathize with him and the other idols who came on Boys Planet because they felt they had no other options. And on that note, I hope in the future these few chances for idols to come onto survival shows grows into more opportunities with the emergence of shows specifically for idols like Peak Time where they don’t have to always feel like they barely have options either due to mismanagement or being underrated. That way it’s a win-win for both sides - more trainees can participate in survival shows while current active idols also have their own opportunities. Also, I do want to say that I wish the cut off age for debuting is 18 and the experience requirement is at least a year of being a trainee. Altho that may not seem completely fair, I also think it’s not right debuting minors (but that’s my opinion so anyone can disagree). And as for trainee experience, I say at least one year because that gives them a little more time to mature and have some of the basics down while they can further grow after debuting. Even though they may gain experience and grow during the shows, the whole point of the survival shows is to determine whose got what it takes and seems ready enough to debut. You may be training during the show too, but it’s not completely a training camp. Idk if I’m thinking about that right but that’s just how I feel. Not to discredit anyone, but having the requirement of a certain amount of trainee time gives chances to more trainees who are up for the challenge but have at least the basics to back them up (unless you’re some genius despite you’re short trainee period, but even then more time can allow you to become more polished).

^ Oh wow, 7 year contract is functionally a permanent group, so yeah, that would have forced disbandment.

One thing I’d like to add. The leader of ciipher Hyunbin was on the survival show fantasy boys. Now he ended up not making the final group but if he had that probably would’ve ended ciipher because this groups contract is 7 years not 2.5 like Zerobaseone.

I think everyone one of these shows the final group should be decided partly through both the judges and the fan votes. The definition of unfair is the finale of build up if you wanna talk about popularity

omg I didn't even realise Ichika was the oldest contestant, I always thought he was younger 😅

Keita is really skilled and seems to be very nice... I suspect he'll be okay, but I sure do wish it would be easier for him.

I love watching him cheer for absolutely everyone to do well. It's not like he's the only one, but I really appreciate his sincerity and sweetness

I think Cube kicked out Hanbin and Matthew too... Alright maybe they just left, it's hard to say, but they've kind of implied that they failed at Cube.
And I know maybe they weren't ready then, but they *so clearly* have immense potential that it's hard to imagine a company not investing in them. Park Hanbin too...

Hui talked about being lonely, and then practically every time I saw him he was in a cluster of trainees, clearly very much loved and appreciated by them all. It warmed my heart 💜

I always have such mixed feelings about survival programs, but one of the things that seems to have been true of this one is that a ton of the contestants genuinely built skills, worked with some really good people, and got enough exposure to have other opportunities.
I think when the shows are done well, trainees get a chance to get direct instruction from really good teachers, so even if they don't win, there's a lot to be gained. Some of them have lasting relationships with the masters that we get to see over time. The ones from small agencies especially... They don't get many opportunities to train with people like these.
It's still weird and the production is designed to build tension and create drama, and the editing choices are often pretty shitty. And in this case, they went with straight up voting results instead of any sort of juried choices, so it was strictly about popularity, which always seems weird to me. The public is not necessarily going to be the best at putting together a well balanced group 😂

I feel like we didn't get nearly enough goofy Gyuvin during the show! Once I got to see him in ZB1 I completely fell for him. He's an absolute sweetheart and so darn silly

It's sad to see so many talented people coming to a show like this for another chance. Hui is just one example for being not well supported by his company. I don't know what the dirctors think at Cube. Their best groups leave or most of the members because they don't feel well supported at their company. If they focus on new groups, they fail big. I haven't seen any promotions for their rookies, while other bands like TWS are already popular around the world. And the smaller EntCompanies seem just being interested in making a lot of money, fast and if this doesn't work out they disband theis groups. Keita has along journey behind him, too. He was very close to become a member of Treasure, then he joined Rain's entertainement company ,and after debuting with Ciipher nothing really happans, no promotions , a few mini albums and management mistakes. By the way, about Mirae, today the members posted handwritten massages on Instagram and inform about their disbandment. So sad, they have been really good and very underrated.
About Hanbin and Keita being supportive. That's why they became leader of their groups. This fits their personalities.

[spoilers for boys planet but not a big deal if you already know who makes it into zb1] you were asking about keita--he's still technically in ciipher but their status is kind of ambiguous right now. after boys planet ended, keita joined the temporary/spin-off group evnne with a bunch of other prominent bp trainees who didn't make it into zb1. their contract is 1.5 years, i think. tag, another member of ciipher who dropped out of bp before it aired, left ciipher and joined one pact with some other bp contestants. several other members of ciipher left the group shortly after bp concluded so they only have like three members left including keita, and they haven't been active in like two years, but they haven't technically disbanded, so it's not clear what's going on there. evnne is currently doing really well though so i have a feeling that if evnne extends their temporary contract, keita will probably leave ciipher and/or ciipher will disband, but that's just my opinion.

yeah the oldest contestant was ichika! he doesn't get a lot of screentime in the show but he was in some of the bts content. there was a clip where he was like, speaking 4 languages to the other g-group members he was performing with. a very talented guy. i think he was also an emcee at kcon japan last year if i remember correctly?

Jay didn't just debut as a soloist! He's has a busy year since Boys Planet. So he debuted as a solo in October 2023, then debuted in the group One Pact at the end of November 2023, with a bunch of other guys from Boys Planet. Then he recently debuted in a project vocal group "B.D.U". Jay was my #1 pick throughout this show and I was SUPER BUMMED that he didn't make it in to ZB1 (though i wouldn't change that line up for the world, I love them) but everything works out for a reason and he's booked and busy.
Also Sidenote: the quiet guy that was in the "fuity room" at 1:12:04 is Ji Yunseo, he's actually Twice's Nayeon's cousin and currently in EVNNE with Keita.

I feel like every time I see "veteran" idols like Hui appear on a survival show that's meant for trainees, I'm like "Why? It's unfair. They're more experienced than the trainees. etc" but every time these guys win me over throughout the show and it seems like they win the fellow trainees over too. Because they've debuted and have stage/broadcast experience, they bring a different mindset and knowledge to a room full of trainees who haven't seen the industry outside their company's practice rooms. The already debuted idols on these shows often become like mentors, someone the other trainees can turn to for guidance, and a pillar of support to the rest of them. I remember people making comments about how awkward it must be for Hui to be such a senior idol on a show with a bunch of guys much younger than him, but you know what? He fit in perfectly fine and the guys seem to love him (especially Gyuvin and Gunwook).
Funny thing is, they keep playing up Hui's age when he wasn't even the oldest contestant on the show. There was a japanese trainee who was older but barely got any screen time. Hui also wasn't the most senior idol either, the two guys from Up10tion, Hwanhee and Dongyeol debuted a year earlier than Pentagon.
Anyways, I'm so glad you started watching this show. This is not only the gayest survival show, but the talent pool is DEEP. And many of them have debuted. Also, the friendships formed from the show is one of the most precious thing ever. Many of them still talk to eachother, hang out, and follow/leave comments on each other's instagram posts.

It’s me I’m the one that said I’m a massive Brian fan hence why he’s my PFP. I felt like his voice didn’t necessarily get used properly. For reason I always fall for the Canadian boys and the Chinese boys so him being both is icing on the cake.

just a little side note, sorry for so many comments, in the episode it said 'the next day' after they all got the initial lesson in that big hall like room, it was actually right after that happened, so it's so understandable that they didn't have the dance perfected like of course they didn't they only just learnt the basics of it 10 minutes ago lmao

the star masters in these first few episodes really annoy me ngl, it's like this in every produce/planet series, the signal song is always really high and will only suit those with higher vocals tones whereas lets say rappers and those with deeper voices (like doha) will be labeled as 'bad' singers when they're really not which will then lead to them being labelled as such and hinder their chances of people voting for them before they actually get the opportunity to show off their skills and full potential. like-yes, there are some contestants who are simply just not good singers technically, but the majority unfortunately fall into this category imo.

the group who performed jessi's 'nunu nana' have now debuted as TIOT with all 4 of them and an extra member who wasn't on the show. I'll stand by this and say that these were the most overlooked contestants on this how with a few others like I can't say too much without spoiling but especially junhyeon (funny pants screaming guy, and yes he's still out here twerking more than ever, he really was the light and energy in this show, especially towards the end) and minseong (flip guy with the amazing vocals) were ROBBED, easily some of the most talented contestants but for some reason people didn't vote for them which makes zero sense imo. anyways, thanks for the reaction! :)

Every show in the Produce series had actresses/actors that couldn't sing or dance, and were sent by their agency just as a way to push their acting career.
When Doha gets told that he should just act, it's because he's clearly one of those - Cube had him listed as an actor on their website before they sent him to the show.
Honestly I understand Onestar's frustration with his presence. He took the spot of someone who actually wanted to be an idol.

For the signal test, many of the trainees were getting sick but if they didn’t take the test, they would automatically be sent to 0 stars (it’s what happened to Ollie later). So it’s extra shitty how they used the clips of yujin being sick knowing if he were to not perform he would fail

As always, it was SUPER fun watching with you and I cant wait for the next episode! :) You asked about Jiwoong's popularity before boys planet. Personally, I was his fan WAY before, and he DID was popular (not crazy popular but he was known by people that watch BL and KDRAMA) - and of course he was popular comparing to other trainees in the show (as you saw, he was ranked second place in episode 1 and 2). One more thing - at the end of the first episode reaction you asked how is it possiblel that the boys were already ranked even though it was only the first episode. Truth is Boys Planet had a lot of hype before the episodes were released. Many videos abou the trainees were released on youtube to get the fans knowing them (funny videos for knowin their personalities and auditions videos to view their skills), so we kinda knew a bit about every trainee (not too much though!) and they did gain popularity before the first episode was aired. Last thing - you asked about Brian? (I dont even remember why did you asked) I dont want to spoiler too much so you better finish boys planet episodes first, but Brian did debuted in AMPERS&ONE group after the show. Anyway thank you so much again, I really appreciatee your professional opinions, sense of humor and kind sensitive personality :)

I think the reason Gyuvin reminds you of Jin is because just like Jin you can tell from his face that he's thinking of doing something goofy. Gyuvin is hilarious lmao. Can't wait for you to get into their variety shows

Keita was extremely popular globally and was usually at number 2 in the global votes but unfortunately was not as popular amongst the Korean voters. You may have heard his name because when he did not make the group there was a lot of disbelief and it made global fans upset. I also had Keita in my top 9 because of his insane talent however I also love all 9 members that did make it into ZB1 and I follow all the other Boys Planet members in their new groups.

PENTAGON hasn't disbanded but most of the members didn't renew their contracts and both of their foreign members seem to be promoting solo in China and Japan so the members aren't really all together much but they do still post vlog like videos with certain members on the groups official youtube channel
