Team Beef Next VR Project Vote #1

Welcome to the very first Team Beef Next VR Project Vote #1. Being the first time we are still working out how this will function best, so please bear with us.

Voting is now open and will close Sunday 15th January at 9:00 CET

Disclaimer: We will be working on the top voted game. We cannot guarantee the success of any port and any of the suggestions may never see the light of day for any number of reasons (Original Dev Stipulations / Incomplete Source / Incompatible Technologies / Takedowns / Performance / Existing Active VR Project). If a project is started and quickly shown to not be feasible then the 2nd place project will be considered. We will be running other votes as resources become available.

We've created a straw poll that requires an invitation to participate. Each patron will have received an e-mail (to your addres registered with Patreon) with a specialised link . Don't share this with anyone as you require this to vote. You must also enter your Patreon name when voting.

If you didn't receive your e-mail, please ensure you have checked your spam filters send us a DM via Patreon and we can check this went out and possibly provide a manual token.

Due to the amount of titles, we're allowing upto 3 votes per person.

FAQs

Why not Patreon Vote?

The Patreon system didn't allow us to do the things we wanted in the vote, I.e. Upto 3 votes per person (and actually couldn't fit the titles in - doh).We hope this external system and tokens don't cause too many headaches.

Why can't I see the results?

As well as building the tension and excitement, we want you to be completely uninfluenced in your voting. Should you log in on Saturday evening and see that one game has all the votes, you would be forgiven for not feeling like you vote counted, or not voting for your personal favourite. The complete vote results will be posted when the vote is complete on Sunday evening.

Game Categories

Each title has been suggested by one of our Patreons. We have grouped them into 6 categories:

Unity PCVR (Mono) - This is a PCVR mod (like BendyVR). The mono in the title means that the decompilations required to base the mod on is simpler and therefore easy for us to do and likely to take less time.

Unity PCVR (IL2CPP) - Again a PCVR Mod (like BendyVR). The IL2CPP means the code is somewhat obfuscated to us. These titles will take longer to do and we may be somewhat restricted in what we can achieve. Generally games that don't need too much alteration should be fine.

Native Open XR (Quest 2 / Pico 4) - These are games that we can convert straight in native OpenXR versions for running on standalone headset (Quest / Quest 2 / Pico 4 / Quest Pro).

PCVR Initially -> Poss Native Later - There are games where the source exists but not on android. Rather than toiling away on the conversion first and you not seeing any progress for potentially months on end, we would first attempt a PCVR version. Should that go well then we can look to bring them to stand alone at a later point (should performance look likely to work well and the VR implementation is good).

PCVR & Native - This means we should be able to work on the PCVR version and stand-alone version simultaneously.

PCVR Port of Existing Team Beef Title - Exactly what is says on the tin.

Ratings:

For each title we have given a rating on:

VR FIT: How well we actually see this game working in VR

Sayonara Wild Hearts is a dreamy arcade game about riding motorcycles, skateboarding, dance battling, shooting lasers, wielding swords, and breaking hearts at 200 mph.

Notes / Reason for Rating: Third person, akin to something like hitman. Mono so easy enough to mod.

Unity PCVR (Mono) - Void Bastards (VR FIT: A | EASE: A)

Inspired by BioShock and System Shock 2, Void Bastards is a revolutionary new strategy-shooter that will test your wits as well as exercise your aim. Can you lead the misfit prisoners of the Void Ark through the derelict spaceships and myriad dangers of the Sargasso Nebula?

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9v5UFFZlVlE

Notes / Reason for Rating: FPS. Mono so easy enough to mod.

Perception is reality. In this mind-bending first-person puzzler, you escape a surreal dream world through solving impossible puzzles using the ambiguity of depth and perspective.

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_SX8XMwMw6Y

Notes / Reason for Rating: FPS. Mono so easy enough to mod.

Unity PCVR (IL2CPP) - Prodeus (VR FIT: B | EASE: D)

Prodeus is a first-person shooter of old, re-imagined using modern rendering techniques and technology. Experience the quality you’d expect from a modern AAA game, designed with retro aesthetics and gameplay that invoke the tech-imposed limits of older hardware.

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kVNYObIFmYM

Notes / Reason for Rating: Face paced FPS. IL2CPP so harder to mod.

Unity PCVR (IL2CPP) - The Long Dark (VR FIT: A | EASE: D)

THE LONG DARK is a thoughtful, exploration-survival experience that challenges solo players to think for themselves as they explore an expansive frozen wilderness in the aftermath of a geomagnetic disaster. There are no zombies -- only you, the cold, and all the threats Mother Nature can muster.

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJ-1O_w2KTg

Notes / Reason for Rating: Should be asweome in VR. IL2CPP so harder to mod.

Unity PCVR (IL2CPP) - CloudPunk (VR FIT: A | EASE: C)

A neon-noir story in a rain-drenched cyberpunk metropolis. It’s your first night on the job working for the Cloudpunk delivery service. Two rules: Don’t miss a delivery and don’t ask what’s in the package.

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4I75L8Z6gi0
Cockpit Update: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=brsCSTPNrLQ

Notes / Reason for Rating: Could be a great experience in VR. IL2CPP so harder to mod although probably less to do once VR / Controls are functioning.

Unity PCVR (IL2CPP) - In Sound Mind (VR FIT: A | EASE: D)

In Sound Mind is an imaginative first-person psychological horror with frenetic puzzles, unique boss fights, and original music by The Living Tombstone. Journey within the inner workings of the one place you can’t seem to escape—your own mind.

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EydFQ_q5EIw

When humans get too lonely, they turn into monsters… Set sail across a beautiful and evolving world of darkness and light, and discover what it means to be human.

Trailer: https://youtu.be/3EDcrwDCYqo

Notes / Reason for Rating: Third Personwith lots of camera movements, although looks a unique title. IL2CPP so a bit harder to get going.

Native Open XR (Quest 2 / Pico 4) - Serious Sam: The Second Encounter (VR FIT: C | EASE: C)

Serious Sam 2 is a shot of adrenaline to the hearts of first-person shooter fans across the world. This is serious!

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N2TAcwgV4GE

Notes / Reason for Rating: Very very fast paced. Already available in PCVR. Direct from android.

Native Open XR (Quest 2 / Pico 4) - Quake 4 (VR FIT: A | EASE: A)

As part of the elite Rhino Squad, you must spearhead Earth’s military invasion of a hostile alien homeworld. But, in this desperate war for humanity’s survival against an unrelenting enemy, you may discover that the only way to defeat them...is to become one of them.

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXQFK35CAbU

Notes / Reason for Rating: Its Quake 4 FPS. Pretty easy merge into existing codebase, so should be quickish win.

Native Open XR (Quest 2 / Pico 4) - Freespace 2 (VR FIT: C | EASE: D)

FreeSpace 2, the follow up to the classic Descent: FreeSpace – The Great War is ready to engage you in the second round. Follow the Grand Terran Vasudan Alliance further into the mysteries of the Shivans. Get your flight stick and hit the flight deck. The last time was just a warm up.

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7uV9-FKvhGU

Notes / Reason for Rating: Not sure how a space sim is going to feel in VR. The code its based on is unoptimised and maybe not wholly complete.

Native Open XR (Quest 2 / Pico 4) - Morrowind (VR FIT: A | EASE: D)

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind® Game of the Year Edition includes Morrowind plus all of the content from the Bloodmoon and Tribunal expansions. The original Mod Construction Set is not included in this package. An epic, open-ended single-player RPG, Morrowind allows you to create and play any kind of....

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cr3TCWPlDrw

Notes / Reason for Rating: This would be based on OpenMW. We are aware there maybe ongoing VR efforts. If so we wouldn't look to step on their toes. The native version seems to have been abandoned. We would also look for some sort of authorisation to proceed. Also worth noting OpenMW is still in heavy development, so a better version maybe possible later on.

Native Open XR (Quest 2 / Pico 4) - Heavy Metal FAKK 2 (VR FIT: E | EASE: A)

F.A.K.K. 2 stands for "Federation-Assigned Ketogenic Killzone to the second level", and is the alias both of the heroine, Julie, and also her homeworld. Before the game begins, we are told that Julie has previously killed a tyrant and "would-be God" named Lord Tyler (during the events of Heavy Metal 2000), and brought the remnant of her people to a planet called Eden. The people of Eden have made a startling discovery: the waters of the planet grant an eternal life to those who drink it, and they have restored ti-rural paradise, pasturing 'creepers' (large bull-like creatures) and peacefully going about their business.

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gTPUgeiXs6E

Notes / Reason for Rating: The 3rd person of this game doesn't look that it would fit particularly well with VR. We could play with it a bit (much like JKQuest). Otherwise a relatively easy merge.

Native Open XR (Quest 2 / Pico 4) - Counter Strike Server (VR FIT: A | EASE: F)

There is an android server launcher available, to work alongside which would would have to investigate  and possibly port into something like unity. The networking code would also have to be adapted to allow something like a feeling of 6DOF. We don't expect this to be anywhere near as good as Quake3Quest, but it is technically possible.

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvI62FUDpKA

PCVR Initially -> Poss Native Later - Warzone 2100 (VR FIT: E | EASE: D)

In the late 21st century, the world's civilizations are wiped out by a series of nuclear strikes, seemingly caused by a massive malfunction of the new NASDA (North American Strategic Defense Agency) strategic defense system.

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MUIpXE6SIzQ

Notes / Reason for Rating: I'm not sure what camera is available when in the overall view. A very different game and challenge.

PCVR Initially -> Poss Native Later - Forsaken (VR FIT: C | EASE: D)

Scavengers from all over the galaxy have come to a dead Earth to loot the remains of the technology that can found in underground tunnels. You must fight your way past the scum of the universe. As you prepare for deadly combat, you are going to quickly learn that the future is... Forsaken!

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OfDSXz1HTYU

Notes / Reason for Rating: A 6DOF shooter has the ability to be very uncomfortable in VR.

PCVR Initially -> Poss Native Later - Homeworld (VR FIT: C | EASE: D)

Experience the epic space strategy games that redefined the RTS genre. Control your fleet and build an armada across more than 30 single-player missions. Choose unit types, fleet formations and flight tactics for each strategic situation.

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yz3vAp53vJU

Notes / Reason for Rating: This isn't the remastered collection so would look more like the trailer. 3D Space RTS. Ships could look a bit small in VR.

PCVR Initially -> Poss Native Later - Amnesia: The Dark Descent (VR FIT: A | EASE: C)

Amnesia: The Dark Descent, a first person survival horror. A game about immersion, discovery and living through a nightmare. An experience that will chill you to the core.

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1nY_5-UrY4

Notes / Reason for Rating: Would be great in VR. Would need some sort of contact from Frictional Games to ensure we are doing everything correctly.

PCVR Initially -> Poss Native Later - Arx Fatalis (VR FIT: A | EASE: C)

This critically acclaimed first-person RPG from Arkane Studios takes the player on an amazing journey into the fantasy world of Arx. Arx is wrought with turmoil, brought to the brink of destruction by a violent war.

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ccca3HL3c4g

Notes / Reason for Rating: Pretty cool RPG. Modern engine project.

PCVR Initially -> Poss Native Later - LithTech (NOLF1/2 / F.E.A.R / TRON2 / Blood 2 / Shogo) (VR FIT: A | EASE: F)

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ylyf9dfp2-c

Notes / Reason for Rating: It is highly speculative whether we could get these games going. The source code itself, although complete, isn't building. We would first have to try and get the engine building stably and then work on each game specifically. Would be fantastic to see these games in VR, but this is a very large undertaking.

PCVR Initially -> Poss Native Later - Spring RTS Engine (VR FIT: E | EASE: D)

Spring is a versatile 3D RTS game engine. Using extensively Lua for scripting game-specific code to make nearly every aspect of the engine customizable, from GUI, to unit AI, to pathfinding.

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2mKhQD2SVqw

Notes / Reason for Rating: Again an RTS where its unclear how much we can influence the camera. Speculative.

PCVR Initially -> Poss Native Later - Tribes (VR FIT: A | EASE: D)

Tribes: Vengeance is an FPS-Z originally released in 2004 but quickly abandoned by its original creators. Community has maintained, patched and groomed it since.

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FbjponR3_mE

Notes / Reason for Rating: Not sure whether the renderer will be compatible. Expect a longish project especially because of netcode.

PCVR Initially -> Poss Native Later - Mount & Blade (VR FIT: C | EASE: D)

Calradia is a land at war, offering great riches and even greater dangers to adventurers and mercenaries that flock to shed their blood on its soil. With courage and a strong sword, an unknown stranger can make a name as a warrior. Free-form sand-box gameplay.

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTUVfmE2ViQ

Notes / Reason for Rating: A few systems that may not work well in VR without massive overhauls.

PCVR Initially -> Poss Native Later - Force Engine (Dark Forces 1 / Outlaws) (VR FIT: C | EASE: C)

Behind a veil of secrecy the evil Empire is creating a doomsday army - one that, if finished, will become the final cog in the Empire's arsenal of terror and domination. Your Mission? Join the Rebel Alliance's covert operations division, infiltrate the Empire.

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5YjJsh6BEk

Notes / Reason for Rating: Similar to Raze, sprite based weapons.

PCVR & Native - Battlefront 2 (VR FIT: A | EASE: B)

Join the rise of Darth Vader’s elite 501st Legion of Stormtroopers as you fight through an all new story-based saga where every action you take impacts the battlefront and, ultimately, the fate of the Star Wars galaxy.

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjSlM5hEfGk

Notes / Reason for Rating: Not entirely sure of the state of the project, but would be interesting to see a VR view of this. Of all the projects this is the one most likely that someone will want to take down.

PCVR Port of Existing Team Beef Title - Return to Castle Wolfenstein (VR FIT: A | EASE: C)

World War II rages and nations fall. The Nazis are twisting science and the occult into an army capable of annihilating the Allies once and for all. As US Army Ranger William “B.J.” Blazkowicz, pierce the black heart of the Third Reich and stop them...or die trying.

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqNSFIuj_FA

Notes / Reason for Rating: Would look to move this to support ioRTCW on PC, so that mods like RealRTCW could be supported.

PCVR Port of Existing Team Beef Title - JKQuest (Jedi Academy Outcast / Academy) (VR FIT: A | EASE: B)

The Legacy of Star Wars Dark Forces™ and Star Wars® Jedi Knight lives on in the intense first-person action of Jedi Outcast.

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxXWkmbX4Ck

PCVR Port of Existing Team Beef Title - WrathQuest (Wrath: Aeon of Ruin) (VR FIT: A | EASE: B)

3D Realms, creators of Duke Nukem 3D, Prey, and Max Payne, presents a hard-core first person shooter, powered by the legendary Quake-1 Tech. Crafted by the hands of Quake-scene necromancers, WRATH is the real deal. You will not survive...

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HYUJYKBCWhE

Notes / Reason for Rating: Quest 2 performance is a bit hit and misss, so could find a better home on PCVR. Difficult to say until the full game is out and optimized.
