The Walking Dead (Season 8 - Episode 9)

Comments

After watching this episode, I stopped watching the show for about three years or so. Carl’s death doesn’t make any sense at all. In fact, nothing in seasons 7–8 makes sense when it comes to his character. And I’m going to explain why. 1. Carl is a kid who knows very well (because he learned it at a very young age) that actions have consequences — life-or-death consequences. 2. He’s a boy who grew up knowing you have to do whatever it takes to stay alive and protect the group. He’s not afraid to get his hands dirty. We’ve seen it many times. 3. Let’s remember that Carl had issues with the rush he got from using weapons. He became so cold and addicted to it that Rick had to take away all kinds of violent activities to get his son back. If we recall season 4, this is mentioned several times. But he also learn to control it and to respect it. To be smart and conscious about life. 4. He’s a highly independent kid. We’ve seen that repeatedly. He observes, learns, applies, and perfects. He knows how to handle weapons, knives, strangers, walkers — he’s smart. 5. We’ve seen that he’s a natural-born leader. From a very young age, he’s always tried to be useful to the group, to take part, to learn, to guide, etc. His character development had been building up for him to learn all the good things from Rick and not repeat his same mistakes. I could keep going about Carl’s traits, but to wrap up the idea: How is it possible that Carl went from wanting to kill the Saviors to becoming a preacher of forgiveness and good faith? Okay, I understand that his conversations with Siddiq reminded him of his mother’s last words. And he could see the potential of the community, yes. As I said he doesn't want to repeat Rick's mistakes and is a natural líder. So Carl changes his outlook, wants to build a future, alright. But still — how is it possible that the kid who survived *two gunshots*, *two herds of walkers*, *multiple walkers*, ends up getting bitten?? Because he tripped? Is that a joke?? It’s ridiculous. And looking at the bigger picture — everything Rick does is for and because of Carl. Carl’s great ending in the comics is that he learned from everyone around him and became better. He was the kid who managed to win and survive the apocalypse. But anyway… What makes me saddest about it all is that the actor didn’t want to leave and fought to stay. He left college, bought a house near the set, and had a contract for two more years. And they still kicked him out. Such a shame.

Izzy tare

You know it was a good episode when Vince and Shoshana barely talk throughout it because of how invested they are!! This is my second time watching this episode and I cried like a mofo! Having said that, and contrary to popular opinion, I actually think it was great that Carl went out because of a walker's bite, to remind people that even tho there is a war going on, this is still in fact a zombie apocalypse show!

Hector Avila

Chandler Riggs, The actor who mades Carl, ask to out the series… He had a problem with the producers, you can search it… and They have to kill him, it wasn’t what they want to the show. But the way that they choose… a bite? Worst Decision from the writers… at HQ’s Carl is the survivor, old man… who tells the story of Alexandria and a Legend Man, who changed the human history and fate, called Rick Grimes

Henry Fonseca

I kept my composure that whole episode until Carl said goodbye to Judith. Man I cried like a baby

bella

Carl being shot twice and never being bit cause he knows how to handle a walker. Dumbest decision by the writers

C. J. Ramirez

He ain't waking up anytime soon...

Matthew Cline

loooove Carl and want to honor him, but he only thought of himself an what HE wanted in that moment, saying Negan should live with them. He didn't think about Maggie for once second. Negan needs to be killed and that's it. He can't just live his life all happy with our people, with Maggie, Maggie's child. Like, sorry Carl, but wake tf up.

alex

siddiq is so fucking fine, he's nice as hell, he's a mf doctor. Siddiq is worth it.

alex

the children on this show irratate me like why cant you just listen geez

Angel Garcia

And that all for this mf Siddiq 🤢🤮🤮

Josip Buretić

Son everyone hated Carl in the beginning he was a damn annoying brat. But as the show went on his character grows, and obviously he’s the part of the main cast, you’re gonna feel something with him dying.

daTrashbot

this reaction is so weird, her take on carl was that from the beginning of the show she didn’t like him, said he rubbed her the wrong way, annoying, reckless, dumb, literally said she didn’t care about him, then cried harder than any reactor i’ve seen for carl when he died, seems fake, rubs me the wrong way, either that or her original take on carl is not at all how she felt, either bothers me

thomas fowler

🥺🥺🥺🥺 all damn episode 😂🤦🏽‍♂️ damn man RIP Carl 😔 even with a rewatch it still hurt, great episode send off

Shalin Carter

Imagine how Rick feels if he'd helped that man instead of scaring him off Carl wouldn't have been bit.

Melody Netherton

This episode always hits so damn hard, especially now having a boy and a girl.

Mike Rizzo

Hey guys once more plz don’t skip the intro to season 9.

Luis Armendariz

it only lasted 3 whole episodes

AJ

no same thats exactly how it felt for me

Matt

He was pretty decent and at least had a conscious. I completely forgot Henry killed him

Courtney

Christopher

My mercy prevails over my wrath ♥️♥️♥️

Adam Sterling

How did yall know about the letters before it happened?😅

Alexander G

Sooooooo, double upload next time???????????

PatreonSucks

🤣🤣

gucci

Ran out of breath reading that. Full stops and u have beef

Alex

Naa fuck Gavin. He got what was coming to him. Glad the kid got to do it lol.

Emily Gray

AMC’s Biggest Mistake Chandler Riggs (Carl’s) actor wasn’t supposed to be killed off specifically He was in College and he wanted to work on the set and do college at the same time. So what happened was he went and bought a house near the set so he could do college work and work on set and they did Chandler dirty as hell when he was a child actor they paid him a certain amount but when he turned 18 years old they got greedy as fuck and they didn’t wanna pay him as an adult and they ended up killing off his character and it caused alot of controversy and it ended up making them lose their viewership and it was seriously bad years ago im still mad about that shit to this day #fuckAMC💯

K’dim Cave

Didn't know that I'll check out the comics .

Tjbosslyfe

Carls death is still a touchy subject for people. The comics were even more about him as he got older. The whole story to this poin was Rick doing all of it, for Carl. But his end is controversial for other reasons. One camp thinks its because Chandler became an adult and there was a pay dispute....the other camp thinks Scott Gimple (show runner) wanted a massive shock death. Up to now, the only one that died without any anticipation was Andrea...who lasted most of the comic series. Doing it the way they did it in the show, was all about shock (even though she got annoying). I hated when this happened BUT, unlike others, I didnt hate the show moving forward because of it.

isthatchrisk

See, I didnt hate Gavin. You can tell how conflicted he was. He liked the control the Saviors had, but you can tell he wanted peace

isthatchrisk

Morgan we should take our leave!. We dont gotta leave they're all dead!

Austin c pates

Carl made Deadpool's "death" scene in Deadpool 2 look instant.

Corey Wolf

This episode broke me when it aired. I was 11 years old when the first season aired and carl was 12 It was like we grew up together. When he died it felt like losing a brother lol i was devastated.

SippingBleach

Wow, it's been so long since I've seen this episode, I didn't remember it being so devastating! I just cried for the whole episode 😭 They did a beautiful job of making it emotional, impactful (both in the moment and for the story going forward), and giving Carl's death the time it deserved.

Ashley Auker

This episode always gets me emotional. Everyone’s acting is just incredible from top to bottom.

Marco

I’ve NEVER cried so hard watching television. I ugly cried for this whole episode and for DAYS later any time I thought about it. I simply am not sure I can watch this again. But for yall I’m gonna give it a go

Tyler

Was it guilt for hating on Carl earlier in the series? This episode was a beautiful send off for the character. I'm excited now because these last several seasons are my favorite of all TWD!

Andrew Ramos

This made me so sad.

Ricardo Pomalaza

rip carl, also happy 4th to everybody be safe!

Trevor Wright

Carl dying always makes me think back on that little boy who saw his father was still alive

Courtney

We cried along with you

Courtney

I did myself but her crying made me cry more

Courtney

RIP Car! 💔💔😭😭😭😭

Courtney

The sad thing is the show killed Carl because he was turning 18 soon so he would command more pay.

eboarder4000

"gut pulling"

Joseph Remington

This is my first watch because I originally dropped the show after the S7 finale and MY GOD I didn’t know I would cry this much watching this show again lmaooooo

Paulo

One of the hardest episodes in the show with both gut pulling and beautiful moments😫✨️Carl is the man, the show goes on, and happy 4th to you all.🙌🏻

Isaiah Metz'ers

God what a rollercoaster of an episode. So emotional. RIP Carl. Seeing this episode just reminds me of so many scenes/moments to come in the new few seasons. I am soooo excited. I love that we're half way through season 8 and V + S are still so invested and loving it.

T

debatable

Gavin A

“You’re my best friend, Michonne.” I will never not get immediate tears in my eyes. Carl’s death was the worst, through this whole episode I just look at him and see that little kid from season one :(

puddle possum

Just be patient y’all will eventually understand the stain glass

Dalton Kelley

The good thing is this is the saddest episode in the entire series. If you made it through this you’ll be ok going forward lol

Hit or Miss

I didn't know i would cry this much when watching this years later on a reaction but here we are. Carl was a real one! R.I.P

Marcel

Losing Carl still hits me, probably the saddest death for me . I guess because we got yo watch him grow up you wanted to see what was next with him becoming an adult

Sherry Bandito

why you guys always trying to give sneak peaks for what?? just talk about the episode instead of bringing up what's next

Caden

I remember it looked like he was holding back tears when Rick and Daryl hugged in s7, Daryl crying and that scene will make any man cry.

Lewis

Forgot about Carl bringing in Siddiq. Respect. RIP. And monster Morgan is unleashed. Yall almost there. Keep watchin

Jah (jakwiq) (Jah Quick)

Shane is punching the air right now

Carl

No bro Judith not in the same league as Carl

JSM -Tac

I know Vince doesn't exactly show emotion too hard but I feel like you can tell when he's feeling it cause he's just staring full deadpan at the screen

Bunnarchist

Wow everyone that quit missed one of the best seasons of the show. Im glad yall can continue now

james moore

I’ve watched this show and episode a million times but I can honestly say this is the first time I teared up seeing Shashanas reaction to it

Scott

LMAOOO

lola

sho crying just made this rewatch so much sadder i started crying all over again rip carl he will be deeply missed! we’ve basically lost everyone from atlanta and like shoshana said the show definitely will have that change from here on out feels like something is missing and thats what hurts me the most about later seasons

lola

Here it is, the biggest mistake of the show... And clearly the most hitting death

Dexter

Rick really lost all his family, now gotta take care Shane and Lori kid 😭

Matty Matt

I’m the same age as Carl roughly so I literally grew up with him and the show. I can totally relate to what shoshana said at the end. Losing Carl really felt like losing family. I stopped watching the first time so I’m excited to watch the rest with yall. Hope yall continue on!

Trevor Boardman

i see the thumbnail im like wait why is she crying then i realized 😩😭😭rip carl

vanessa

Carl being gone is rough.. but we just have to remember.. we still have Judith. Rick and Michonne haven't lost EVERYTHING. Judith may be the future of the Grimes family. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Dave Canon

Shout out to shashana Changing her mind on Carl . That's the impact this show has . I got hit with the emotion too . Carl always been in my top 5 . Rip Carl . Top 10 walking dead episode. We lost almost all of the OG cast . Rip Beth , Lorrie , crazy Shane , ETC . Great show .

Tjbosslyfe

As a live viewer & someone in the online space with TWD community, I started watching the show with its premiere on Halloween 2010 & I was almost 14 years old. I grew up alongside Carl and watching a character around my age (Chandler was a few years younger when it started, but Carl died just around when he turned 18) in the first main long form show I stuck with in my life, and even though Carl as a character only canonically aged ~1.5-2 years in the show through those 8 seasons according to the show’s official wiki, it was like y’all said watching a little brother slowly die before our eyes and it HURT something fierce. In the comics only about a month passed between losing Lori & Carl losing his eye at Alexandria which is WILD 🤣. In the show it was at least a bit longer because of the time jump between S3-4 but still not much time 😂. It really is hard to grasp the timeframes when watching week to week because we had - S4 showing us 401-408 only ~ 4 DAYS & then 408-416 ~ 1 Week which is CRAZY! Thats due to the shifting POVs taking place at the same time. - And then with S5, we have Terminus & 501-509 losing Bob & Beth only taking place over about 4 DAYS! Then we jump ~ 3 weeks to when we lose Ty & within about 1.5-2 weeks we’ve met Aaron & made it to Alexandria! - S6 had 601-609 The whole herd storyline take place over only 1.5-2 DAYS! We jump a month to heal Carls eye & meet Jesus, then within 2-3 days we’ve attacked the outpost & then ~ 2.5 weeks later they’re on their knees meeting Negan! So from the day we arrived at Alexandria to meeting Negan in the clearing is ONLY 2 MONTHS 😂! - Then we have S7 in its entirety taking place over ~3 Weeks. - S8 jumped 1.5-2 weeks after losing Sasha and then 801-809 has taken place over only about a day & a half MAYBE 2 days which again is INSANE 😂

Jack's World

Man, RIP Paul Walker, I miss him and his beautiful flow

Lewis

I hope that too cuz there's a lot of good season's and episode's left

Ico

Honestly might be the biggest L in TV series history

Webster91

This was a Pual walker type of Death to me in the Walking dead . That's what it felt like to me .

Tjbosslyfe

This episode and Glee's "Quarterback" episode has made me tear up more than any other series I can remember watching.

Morgo

One of my biggest gripes with the show up to this point, and this hurts because it is my #1 show of all time, is that they do not know how to maintain younger characters long term and it infuriates me. Carl, Sophia, both were written to the end of the comics, and taking them both out is absolutely TRAGIC.

Jack's World

Timeline update for ya with this MASSIVE death. It is wild to think of the implications of the short spans of time between even just the prison & now, as well as losing Glenn only ~25 days ago is very hard to grasp but it’s the unfortunate reality. Jack's World

Carl's death and exit from the show is down to Scott M. Gimple (showrunner) being absolutely heartless & greedy. He is replaced by Angela Kang after this season. Chandler Riggs, who plays Carl, was told by Gimple that he would be in for at least 3 more seasons. Then as Chandler's 18th birthday approached, with becoming an adult, he would start a new contract that didn't go through his parents as a proxy as it had for the entirety of the series because of him being a minor. When his 18th birthday came up, Gimple decided to not renew his contract, as one of the things in the new contract would understandably be a pay raise. He sidelined Chandler, and out of nowhere told him he was going to be killed off. And when Candlers Dad tried to expose it on Facebook they quickly got silenced by the network…the biggest SCREW YOU a network could do. Chandler had bought a damn house in Atlanta (where the show was filming) AND contrary to what many people think, he was going to university there in order to be able to KEEP filming for the show & Gimple absolutely BLINDSIDED him & his family. Many of the main actors were NOT happy with how this was handled either. This was the episode that finally made me cry. The show will certainly change now & there is so much drama behind this horrible decision but god damn did Chandler who plays Carl act his fucking ass off here! The fact Carl makes it to the end of the comics with Sophia is what makes this hurt even more, his arcs after this war were incredible & the fact they didn’t play them out sucks ass.

Jack's World

Buckle up 🔥

Morgo

I hope you guys actually finish all of the walking dead

ScorpioGreed

Well we got Judith now so 🤷🏽

Morgo

I remember almost having tears every scene with Carl. It was so well done even if you didn't care deeply about Carl, you can care about his vision and the impact it has on Rick. You really can't hate on their decision to kill him off after this episode like deadass. RIP Carl. Looking forward to more walking dead. 🔥

Morgo

Definitely is worth it

Biglo

please don’t listen to those saying y’all should stop watching after this season. i hope y’all see it through to the end cuz despite what others say i think it’s sooo worth it

amanda

Carl should've lived to grow up and become the next leader once Rick is older and decides to step down. Like ugh so much lost potential for character building and storyline. Literally the worst decision to kill Carl.

ConcernedClaire

I love creative deaths/killings

Ally 土

Morgan got to do a mortal kombat like kill, brutal, but so cool Also the parallel with Carl telling the story about the kid at the prison attack and Henry being the one to kill Gavin with the same rage as Morgan was cherry on top too. Wish they never killed Carl, to begin with. Found it sad that everything Rick has done was to build a future for his kids. But I am at least glad that it was a doctor that he saved. Michonne is basically losing another kid again, and Rick ofc. Cannot image what it is like to lose a child, specially when you saw them growing up and all you did was for them. The ending to this episode was so great. My past self would be so mad to see Negan on this future Carl wanted, because I could never forgive him for what we lost. But right now, I understand what he wanted, I understand his point of view. Not everyone can change, but sometimes some do, but for that they need a chance to prove it. If it was me, I would say to kill them all ofc. I see myself in maggie a lot, but who knows, experiences make opinions. I never watched anything from now on, except some spoilers, but I am excited to watch with you guys! Great reaction

Ally 土

All because he wanted an adult salary after turning 18 😣 this episode gets me everytime😭

Jaydon Coyne

this is the episode where I started watching again

Christopher

CodyG24

COORALLL!!

the episode tht changed it all .

NorthhSZN

Nahh, they need to keep watching it,season 9 and 11 are masterpiece, very good season's...they are close to the end then why they should stop watching it lol

Ico

U guys should stop watching after season 8, It's were the story should've ended cause the story hasn't concluded even to today

Paul Keane

still to this day the saddest episode of television i’ve ever seen, rip to my goat carl

nsavz11

I think it also took longer for carl to turn bc the bite was only teeth marks, most others get an entire chunk bitten out of them, he just got alittle nibble. The amount of things they put Carl through just to kill him off like that....... He deserved so much better. A long time ago i thought I heard that he wanted to be taken off the show to do other stuff, but then not long ago I heard that wasnt the case, so im not really sure if he wanted to move on from the show or not, but if he didnt then this is 1,000x worse

Webster91

was tryna find a video to watch while eating breakfast then i get the notification yall posted thank youuuu
