Was u235 what they used to discover they could split the atom out of curiosity?

I am a nuclear pysicist. You asked in a previous ep about U235, yes, U235 is uranium. Most Uranium is U238, which is fairly stable, U235 is much more rare, but much more useful since its unstable, it can be broken apart which releases a lot of energy. Since when it undergoes fission (breaking apart) it produces a lot of heat, which then can be used to heat water and create steam, similar to how coal is turned into energy. Iodine is something we naturally need to make hormones, so our body absorbs it. Uranium fission produces a kind of iodine which is really radioactive, if your thyroid absorbs it, your risk of getting thyroid cancer skyrockets. Iodine pills basically give your body lots of normal iodine, so that it wont try to absorb the extra radioactive iodine. Radioactivity causes cancer because it can penetrate cells and damage DNA, often it can break the bits in your cells/dna that tell it to die after some time. This means your cells keep growing, and keep getting bigger, without dying (which is what cancer is)
