Psychos LITERALLY just invaded their community out of nowhere with limited protection and slaughtered probably half of the people that were still in there that very morning, and now there's a horde of unexpected walkers that were meant to be taken care of the next day currently surrounding the entire community 20 deep. The true reality of the world that they live in has finally hit him and he's angry that they'd been to believe otherwise through naivety via his mother. All of this IS a lot for someone to take in at once and he's looking for someone to blame for his current pain and trauma. His mother is the unfortunate target as both his mother and their leader...

I am SO happy they are continuing forward because it only gets so much better and more intense from here!
