What I dont understand is, if the Dudlys hate Harry so much that they treat him like utter garbage, why do they try so hard to stop him from going away to school every year? wouldnt they want him out of the house and not worry about magic in the house?

I n the books it goes more into his push for authority, and the rift it causes in the weasleys
