Also the governor planned on killing them a long time ago. When he initially came back from his conversation with Rick in the barn, he told Milton that he lied about “going their separate ways” and to prepare for an ambush. He was definitely going to find them and wipe them out the moment they cleared the prison.

I know. Rick's whole journey since the end of the season 3 finale to this moment has been about whether or not you can actually come back from the darkness. That despite that everything that's happened, no matter what "monster" you've become, you don't have to stay that "monster". You can still come back from it. Rick had still been questioning that ideology earlier in the season, especially after the Tyrese incident, despite taking the step back from leadership, taking the more domestic role in contribution, and having Carl take a step back as well while trying to lead his son by example to bringinh him back from his own darkness. Hershel still reassured him that he can and has come from it. That whole last speech of Rick's was the moment. It's like Rick finally believed and understood everything Hershel had been trying to teach as it all finally fell into place for him in that moment. Season 3 wouldn't have even tried to reason with him, not the way that he did here, at least. Hershel was so proud of Rick. For a split moment, the Governor almost believed it, too, through Rick's words... That was until he took one last look at Rick and realized that he truly believed that, no, you can't come back to what you were. "Liar". The Governor was "too far gone"...

That why she didn't do more after she impaled him. She didn't need to because the Governor was going to die after that. The job was done. I'm so happy yall enjoyed the mid-season finale! I mean it was chaotic and sad but you still enjoyed it based just on your reactions during. You have no idea the feeling it gives me to see other people genuinely so invested in this show's every episode like I was originally! I love that yall love this show! Btw I agree more with Sho about the Rick/Governor thing. The governor was a pure evil psychopath he was absolutely killing Herschel regardless. And the look Herschel gave Rick wasn't a look to say "go ahead and leave the prison" it was a look of "im so proud of you Rick for following my lead in saying we can all live together in peace" but the Gov was killing him regardless so I actually give Rick huge credit for even being able to swallow his pride and hatred by offering Gov's people to come in the prison and live with them. Also the only reason Rick lost that fight with the Gov is because he got shot directly through the thigh right at the start of the gunfire in case yall didnt catch it. Anyway keep up the AMAZING reactions and I hope you keep LOVING the show

I'll never forget watching this one for the first time, craziest episode ever. I think Hershel's nod to Rick was him accepting that he was a dead man and that a fight was inevitable. But then, to his surprise, Rick honored his philosophy and tried for peace by offering to let them in. You could tell he was so proud of Rick in that moment. Pretty sure the Governor genuinely intended to take the prison for its walls until he was actually standing there facing Rick. In that moment, I think he was seeing nothing but red and ultimately wanted revenge.

everytime I watch this scene I just get so mad... In his last moments you can see the pride on Hershel's face, he knew Rick still had that humanity in him… Plus the governor was so stupid to have his group drive the tank over the fence so now the Prison isn't worth anything without the fence so basically they fought them for no damn reason because nobody won.

This one of the best episodes of all time. Got my heart ripped out by killing off one of my top 5 characters but it was done so well. RIP to the GOAT Hershel. I agree with her take, the Governor was going to kill them off either way. Especially when he found out Megan was dead. I believe that because of how much he went out of his way to finish off Hershel. There is no reasoning with a psychopath. Even if they gave up the prison, the Governor wouldn't stop. That's just my take. And Rest in Hell to the Governor, great villain and great character. I will never forgive him for Hershel.

I mean, was he supposed to just let her turn? There shouldn't be any remorse, it's considered a kindness to stop people from turning. That's exactly why Michonne left him to turn, because of what he did to her, Milton, and Andrea. He didn't deserve mercy. I always hated that Lilly shot him instead of leaving him.

The Governor didn't really want the prison, he just wanted them all dead. If he actually wanted that place, he wouldn't have plowed the fences down and blasted the building to pieces, attracting even more walkers to it. The fences and walls were the only reason to even bother taking the prison. Also, Michonne didn't leave the Governor alive because she wasn't out for revenge anymore; the complete opposite in fact. She wanted to leave him to turn, like he did to Milton and Andrea.

i feel you but as time goes on and i rewatch his story i start to understand his personality and how deranged he truly is. I think for the first antagonist he was pretty solid for story and character building

None of us knew it at the time, but two episodes prior was really Hershel’s farewell episode. And it was just him helping people, being a badass, and a power moment of him succumbing to the pressure of it all when he broke down crying. In hindsight it’s a great episode in that “sendoff” regard: it showcased the best aspects of his character perfectly. Rip Hershel AND Scott Wilson, his actor

I feel y'all's point about keeping Hershel there so he could get killed. I feel like that's some good writing honestly cause it really raises stakes so hard. Plus in the comics he actually does get killed by Governor, though I think the show making it be a full decapitation instead of just in the comics where he got shot in the head, that's just so much more brutal man.
