The Walking Dead (Season 2 - Episode 7)
Added 2024-12-10 15:00:14 +0000 UTC
Hey Rangers, here is another episode of the walking dead. Hope you guys enjoy our reaction!
That's not the case it's only because Otis was used as bait that Shane was able to get away. He was limping and Otis was overweight and slow. Both of them only had 1 shot left. The walkers were slowly gaining ground on them. They both would've died had Shane not shot him. Doesn't justify it but it is the case.

Thing is if Shane didn’t kill Otis they both would have made it out and would have found out about Sophie earlier Shane had tunnel vision and wasn’t looking at the big picture we need a doctor and the farm doing what he did can make Hershel refuse to help then u lose Lori baby and the farm

Shane killing Otis is what made them stay if. Otis was to live he was one that puts them in barn so when they start searching and girl he would say oh I saw a Walker a while back that looked like that

I love Shane but can definitely see Rick’s point of view here. Clearly he’s doing this all so the group can stay but mainly so Lori can have her baby some place safe and secluded on the farm and the fact Hershel has medical experience as well is a no brainer. Rick knows if somehow Hershel gets pissed off in any way, the hopes of the baby surviving and good connections forming are gone. Going as far to do something like that is being a good leader and most of all a good dad

Definitely agree with you about the whole Laurie situation. He is way too emotionally invested in her and Carl. He had to have had strong feelings for her way before the apocalypse to be this sweet on her. Andrea is literally the perfect match for him but he's blinded.

Im still rocking with Shane. He is a realist. Dont agree with everything he does but Rick was definitely doing too much trying to appease Hershel.

Finally got around to actually watching the reaction! Really good stuff! I totally see where Vince is coming from with saying "idk why but I'm with shane right now" because Shane really did have the right Idea, but absolutely TERRIBLE execution. I don't want to spoil any character development, just be ready to actually meet Rick Grimes next episode!
edit: lmao watching the after episode discussion and vince is killing me with the ramble

Yeah so I'm referring to his outlook on the outbreak. And without spoiling anything, Character "X" makes a statement to a group of people very similar to what Shane is saying and doing here if you recall the ending of 5x15.... "If you don't fight, you die"

Haha couldn't agree more. Only thing i'd really say is I don't think Rick was really going along with what Hershel wanted. It was a more trying to see his point and to be on good terms. Maybe Rick would of seen Sophia too putting those 2 walkers in the barn. Rick said many times he wasn't okay with it but it's not his place which is true so he was trying to be on good terms for the benefit of the group and his pregnant wife. So whatever happens from here is on Shane. He didn't ask questions when they showed up he just did actions. Not so much of anything serious just a reminder Rick wasn't really okay with the walkers but was trying to negotiate.

Spoiler tag but they've already watched the next episode by the time I type this.
Herschel claims in the next episode he didn't know, and he would have no reason to lie. The working theory amongst the fandom is that since Otis was the one who gathered the walkers, he must have found Sophia. He was never told they were looking for a young girl, so he never mentioned her, and then Shane killed him before that knowledge could come to light. I think given Herschel's character it's safe to assume he truly didn't know.

Not enough people talk about the fact hershell literally had to know sophia was in that barn the whole time. Like all the group ever talked about was finding her, and he knew her description. Whether or not she was in the barn before they even got there or if it was just recent he still had to know a little girl fitting her description was in that damn barn. He’s owed a lot of the blame here!!

One of the biggest heart breaks of the Team. All that searching was for nothing. What if they just left an never checked the barn . Rip Sofia .

Rick willing to almost get bit by walkers to keep his group on farm. Shayne wanting to take over group an have things his way. For this one episode shayne made the right choice. He still grimy tho.

Shayne made the right the descion about this. And the safety of the group. But his feeling about Lorrie and Carl have corrupted his motives on things . But he gambled on they safety at the farm. By opening the barn. Now if they get kicked out it's his fault. This farm has been peace for them ..

Rick is "dragging zombies back with hershel" because he will do whatever it takes to stay at the farm which is 100 times more safe for his wife, son, and baby then anywhere in the outside world EVEN with a barn full of zombies. Rick going along with hershel's ways in my opinion shows how far he will go to give his family the best chance and quality of life. Shane risked everyones lives by unleashing all the walkers out at once, AND by acting rash to prove a point which ultimately put their chances of staying on the line. Team Rick all the way if it wasnt obvious haha I like his strength and character/morals, Shane doesn't even compare.

for me the thing is just ..... we all saw the barn and just looked over it yunno like us arriving on straight chaos with carl shot then the next day when everything settles we just never think to ask maybe sophia snuck in there etc but no the group was too caught up on trying to find her out in the woods and not even the place they were at . i think the second they saw sophia shane and rick realized how could they be so dumb and clueless and then rick locked in and realized it was him who left her . shane couldnt even shoot her . this show id just to dam good man

What’s also heartbreaking with Sophia’s death is that she died alone. Nobody to comfort her. She was lost and got bit and was probably wondering around in the woods for about a day, just slowly losing blood and then dead. Nobody to find her until Otis finds her turnt. It’s chilling knowing that fact

The best defense against the “Glenn should be the leader” argument is just Shane. If anybody but Rick was the leader he would just takeover.

2024-12-11 01:27:46 +0000 UTC
Shane got LUCKY with finding Sophia. It was literally by chance that Sophia just so happened to be in the barn. It could have just been if someone went in the barn the way Glenn did could have seen her just easily. But here's the thing. This is still Hershel's farm. If they didn't want to stay at the farm with a barn full of walkers, then they needed to leave. Period. That's not fair to Hershel. Taking over someone else's home, disrupting their peace for your own comfort is fucked up. Especially when that person was the one who was already kind enough to provide you with hospitality in the first place. The problem with Shane is that he's a very selfish person. He's an impatient hot head with a one track mind who doesn't think of other possibilities. The first thing that comes to his mind is what he declares is the right answer. Let's be real. He does not care about the group. He just cares about Lori & Carl. The group can't even trust him because again, let's be real, Shane is the type to kill a member in his own group. Like he said, he loves Rick like he's his brother and he was ready to gun him down. Rick has a wife was trying to by time to get Hershel to see reason and went along with Hershel's walker capturing in order to do that. He had to. He has a wife, a son, and an unborn baby that he needs to keep safe. He just needed time to get through to Hershel but Shane, as usual, was impatient...

Watching a show with characters that we just started knowing about makes it hard to understand Hershel. I also think he’s wrong, but I try to put myself in his shoes to understand; what if those people were my close relatives? Mom, daughter, wife? Would I have at least a little hope for a cure or something that could make them come back? Or would I just kill them on the spot? Let’s remember he’s not been out there, he doesn’t know what this world is really like. This episode is genius ‘cause it shows how easy it was for Shane and the others to kill what were just walkers. They had no relation to those people, just souless bodies walking around. But as soon as Sofia walks out of that barn, NONE of them had the guts to shoot her. Even tough she was “Preety Much Dead Already”. Only Rick had what it takes. So is this world about who’s got guts to switch with the apocalypse and take ugly but necessary action; or is it about who’s got what it takes to deal with the consequences (that will come!) of ugly actions?
Great plot and great characters, great media always leaves room for a lot of thinking and debating.
Remember, the show is not about the dead.

I like to think that one of the reasons the show did away with the more “humanized” walkers from season 1 is that it would’ve blatantly validated Herschel’s claims if they’d kept that in the following seasons. Obviously that’s not the case, from what I’ve gathered over the years they strayed away from those types of walkers for reasons behind the scenes. But they really wouldn’t have been able to write Herschel as this “confused out of touch survivor” if we still saw walkers using rocks to break windows, pick up and inspect their personal belongings, etc.
Nicholas Obici
2024-12-10 23:42:35 +0000 UTC
I'm still team Rick at this point. Yes, taking walkers to the barn with Hershel was silly, but I think he was solely doing that to gain his trust because to Rick, Hershel is a necessity for Lori and her baby. Shane is right about a lot of things, but I agree that his delivery is often the problem.

Been waiting for this episode! It is one of the best out of the whole series, imo! Shane is definitely unhinged & irrational, he was right, but I feel he went about it in the wrong way. Rick was never in agreement with the walkers in the barn. He went out there to get those walkers to appease Hershel in the moment but there's no way he would've just let the walkers remain in the barn. He was trying to get through to Hershel in a calm way because he needs him since Lori is pregnant. At the end of the day, Rick made the toughest choice in shooting walker Sophia, he stepped up because he is the true leader. Rick is built for this world and Shane definitely is not. He is like a ticking time bomb! And the development of Daryl and Carol's relationship/friendship is such a joy to watch again. It is one of the best things about The Walking Dead.

This is the episode that solidifies Rick as a true leader over Shane. Shane was all in to take out all of the walkers in the barn until Sophia came out and nobody wanted to step up to put her down. Rick was the only to step up and do the hard thing.

When rick put Sophia down in front of the group, what it really symbolized to me was Rick going forward and taking ownership of his shortcomings, and him being the one to do it in front of the group was him being strong when the cold reality of the setting set in. He owed it to his people as a leader for all their effort they spent looking for Sophia and all the danger he put them in through doing so, and he knew it was on him and had to be the one to end it.

I know the walker thing was crazy but Rick was willing to do that because his wife is pregnant and Carl too. That's where Shane is wrong Rick has a more calmer approach and the barn was secure meanwhile Shane is too hot headed and in the moment it makes situations more dangerous sometimes.
Courtney
2024-12-10 22:01:26 +0000 UTC
It’s still dangerous. It takes one weak spot in the barn to form, one bad storm for someone or multiple to potentially lose their life. It’s not worth the risk. I don’t know if you have an old country barn or not but I can tell you they are not as sturdy as you think. It’s just not smart…especially when y’all are the ones sleeping outside

Shane would be a great second in command to Rick, but he’s too unstable and doesn’t want to negotiate with others, Shane doesn’t care about the group at all which makes his decisions very rash because he’s only thinking about his circle, there’s bigger things happening than him and his group

I felt Shane on this. Everyone putting feelings first instead of reality. Yea you need softness and understanding sometimes, but you also need to just say F it sometimes. Like in EMS or an ER, you may triage a child and some adults in a crash. some people will try and save a child with half a chest and is too far gone but forget the adults and let them die cause they spent all their time on a kid you can’t save cause it looks or feels better to try and save a child. They’re trying to save those too far gone instead of doing what needs to be done for the living. Sometimes you have to walk an overly emotional thinker down the logical path and spell it out for them to get it. Cause to them it’s just ‘do what society expects’ and show emotion, not what’s actually necessary right now. Just an EMS perspective cause I worked it. We have the privilege of knowing what all is transpiring everywhere, and I know Shane has other issues but separate those from this one problem.

Problem with the barn is what happens when it gets full? The doors might be reinforced but idk if the walls are, looked like they had a bit of hay but they can easily move that. How are they putting them in there? Do they have to lure them towards one end and open the door? Which would lead back to the first question

This episode really solidified my start of loving Carol and Daryl as a duo.
They’re such an unlikely duo yet perfectly fit together, like they’re what each other needed. Carol helps Daryl develop so much as a character, like the way he immediately ran to Carol and held her in his arms as Sophia came out of the barn.
Carol gives care and tenderness to Daryl which he’s most likely never had before and desperately needed, and in turn Daryl has given comfort and strength to her and is the only one able to comfort her anymore.

Shane is the one to make the hard calls. He’s absolutely lost his mind and is definitely unhinged. But at the end of the day he makes the hard calls regardless of the collateral impact it has on everyone else. Rick is the optimistic other half who will always try and find a way around something if it means preventing bloodshed or conflict. Complete opposites. Crazzzy.

I never understood Shane’s attitude towards the barn. It’s not like the walkers were kept in a chainlink kennel out in the yard; it’s a group of 12-ish walkers in a barn meant for animals stronger than them, it’s perfectly fine to keep them there imo. Would I have felt uncomfortable knowing I’m sleeping 70 feet away from them? Sure. Wouldn’t necessarily feel unsafe though, those doors are clearly double/triple reinforced. What I do understand is their anger towards Hershel because WHY would you keep something like that from people who most likely don’t share your mindset 🫠

Shane is just not the right leader for this group, y'all already know he only cares about Lori, Carl and now Lori's unborn child which might be his, so he's going to do whatever he needs to do to keep himself, Lori and Carl alive. You don’t need to defend him every episode. Like you said, most of them go through character developments, I mean the show is 11 SEASONS long. I agree that Shane was right that they should have cleared out the walkers, but even a broken clock is right twice a day. That doesn’t mean in any way shape or form I would become team shane just because in this moment he made a good call. At the end of the day Rick was helping with the walkers to gain more of hershals trust and keep the conversation going to stay and not be kicked out. Rick is actively trying to keep his humanity and protect his family and everyone else. And when it came down to it Rick put sofia out of her misery. Nobody else ran after her on the highway and nobody else took her down when she came out the barn. I’m team Rick all day.

Rick and Shane are the two polar opposites. Shane is “neutral evil” and Rick is “lawful neutral”. They’re entirely separate leader types. Shane will do whatever he wants when he wants to do it.
Rick tries to listen, he tries to fix his mistakes and meet people halfway, (sometimes to a fault). As he continues to adapt to the world they live in, his “alignment” can and will change.
At the end of the day, which person would you rather have standing beside you every step of the way? Who would you want to lead your loved ones, your friends in this world? I personally think the choice is easy, but what about you guys?

Rick is born for this world. Shane is cracking in 5 months of the show starting. None of loses Shane stated was Rick's fault.

I also agree with both of ya’ll! Vince you are right, what Shane did needed to be done. Shoshana you are right too! Shane’s delivery could be a lot better. Jon Bernthal delivered that monologue so well, definitely one of the best in the whole show. His acting is incredible

i guess you could say God really did give rick a sign about sofia because otis shot carl which lead them to the farm which then had sofia inside the barn this whole time, crazy detail to think about

Rick needed to learn a hard lesson from Shane. I agree with Vince on the gun thing they all need to be armed and trained. This is a hard lesson for Rick to learn. Which is the point of the episode. But I agree with Shoshanna Shane is unhinged. He's a rapid dog. You need someone who can hold back and be hardcore when needed.

Understandable, which why he couldn’t be leader of the group because he only cares for Lori and Carl, not the whole group, Rick realizes that there’s bigger things happening than just his family and he has to care for everyone else, Shane would be a great second in command to Rick, but his methods are too reckless

If you go back and rewatch the first half of the season you’ll realize how sophia got in there and the circumstances of no one knowing. It was said that Otis put those people in the barn on Hershel’s orders. Hershel believed these were just sick people, not dead people. Let’s just say the highway scene where Sophia got chased into the woods happened on a Monday. When Rick led Daryl back to where he hid Sophia it was the evening of that Monday. They were looking for her, cut open the walker and went back to the group on the highway cause it was getting dark. The next day (Tuesday) the whole group went out and searched for her most of the day. Carl got shot that same day by Otis and was rushed to Hershel’s farm. That means Otis found Sophia as a walker either late Monday night or Early Tuesday morning. Put her in the barn, went out hunting and shot Carl. Never once did Shane or Rick mention to Otis that they were searching for a little girl. Otis was the only one who knew and since he died, Rick’s group never found out that Otis put her in there. Another small eerie detail that interesting is when Rick hid Sophia he told her that if he didn’t make it back, head that way and keep the sun on her left shoulder. Sophia was bit on her left shoulder…..

I really hope Vince gets on the Rick train sooner rather than later. I don’t wanna defend Rick every episode. yall gotta understand leaders make mistakes and learn from them. It’s all part of character development. A lot of these characters are babies in these earlier seasons

There was a reason Rick had to step up and kill Sophia, cause he is the natural leader, it just would not feel right if any other person was to be the one to take her down.

Right, Shane only cares about Lori and Carl and that’s his biggest weakness, to be a leader, you need to care about everyone else, not just your main family, Rick has to lead because he cares for everyone and not just himself because it isn’t just him and his family anymore

I don’t like Vince’s argument against Rick here. We could play the if this happened then that happens game all day who’s to say if Rick helped get those walkers into the barn he wouldn’t have discovered Sofia in there and then taken care of it? What Shane did was incredibly rash and hot headed and a dangerous way of taking care of the issue. Herschel was in the wrong for keeping the walkers in the barn but that doesn’t mean you need to force the issue. The threat was there from day one and nothing had happened but as soon as Shane found out he couldn’t stand it. He’s too narrow minded in keeping Lori and Carl safe that he’s a danger to everyone else

Vince… Rick was doing whatever he had to do so his people can stay on the farm. That’s a good leader. If shane was the leader he would get everyone killed because he only cares about Lori and Carl.

Idk if anyone brought it up but this universe of Twd and most zombie shows the concept of a “zombie” doesn’t exist like no movies no cultural references. That’s why it’s easy to say Hershel crazy but the concept of a zombie isn’t a norm for him

Shane has adapted quickly to this new world faster than the others, Rick isn’t there yet and I feel like this episode was the turning point for the entire group to show that the old world is gone and it’s all about survival at this point, Shane got there faster than everybody else did

I’m sorry Vince but you’re wrong on this one. Good leaders are open to everyone’s ideas, even if they don’t agree with them. Rick didn’t believe Hershel’s ideology but he was open to listening to him and trying it out for himself, mostly to gain his trust so that the group could survive. Shane was being selfish, he already planned on leaving the farm and now devised a plan to purposely sabotage the group so that Lori (and I’m assuming Carl) could leave with him. He wasn’t thinking about anyone but himself. Your girl is right, when someone had to step up and pull the trigger on Sophia, Rick did. Knowing what happens in future seasons, someone loud and rowdy like Shane would have gotten them killed early on. You need someone level headed who can sit down and have a conversation like Rick.

Shane was berating Rick for not accepting things the way they are in this post apocalyptic world, but when the time came he couldn’t finish the job. He couldn’t accept it in that moment. Rick did. He stepped up when he was probably so guilt ridden and so heart broken and took responsibility. Rick is who Shane thinks he is.

Sophia was dead for a long time. It’s theorized that she got bit that same day and died. Otis saw her while hunting brought her to the barn and went back out and that’s when he shot the deer and Carl.

This was the mid season finale when it aired on TV. The show follows the comic book very closely sometimes, but Sophia's death was something they added for the show so it shocked everyone (she's a main character in the comic and grows up to marry Carl one day).
