The Boys (Season 4 - Episode 4)

Hey Rangers, here is another episode of the boys hope you guys enjoy our reaction!

The Boys (Season 4 - Episode 4)

Comments

You bring up a great point, Courtney. Even I overlooked the possibility. Homelander would definitely have more leverage.

Aldo Gonzales

Definitely not as bad as a lot say

Courtney

This was probably my favorite overall episode in the entire show. Antony Starr’s performance was impeccable. It’s hard to feel for Homelander because of all the heinous things he’s done, yet this episode gave us actual insight for some of the reasons he is the way that he is. Doesn’t make his actions right but it does make you understand why he does certain things. Also, for Shoshana, (this may come off as rude but that is in no way, shape, or form my intentions) if you aren’t enjoying the show anymore you don’t have to watch it. I for one would rather stop watching something I don’t enjoy than watching it just for the sake of watching it. You would however miss out on (arguably) the show’s greatest season finale so I do hope you see it through to the end. To quote Billy Butcher, season 5 is gonna be “FOOKIN DIABOLICAL”

JP

Agreed with Shoshanna and R.E below. For me, Homelander and Butcher have been carrying the show hard after Season 1 and this season it’s becoming painfully obvious. I appreciate the honest opinion from Shoshanna and Vince and that’s probably the main reason I’ll check out these reactions, very curious about the thoughts for the rest of the season.

Harry

Spot on, it’s always been depreciating but this season made me seriously consider just not watching season 5

Harry

Well I guess just Shoshana, regardless it has come to the point where even Vince likes homelander now, before he always rooted for the boys.

s0l0 !

“Homelander is the only entertaining part of this show at this point in my opinion” Fixed it for you. Clearly said homelander is not the issue.

Tripp

homelander is the only entertaining part of this show at this point, and they don't like homelander so it makes sense Shoshana is not feeling the show anymore.

s0l0 !

For me the Frenchie and Kimiko storyline has always been the best but these first 4 episodes they weren't in sync

Courtney

I think watching it more than once is the best thing to do because once you get over the shock of watching it for the first time makes a difference

Courtney

I didn't mind the Frenchie and Colin together BUT what bothered me about it was the separation of Frenchie and Kimiko and how he was cold to her when in the past seasons they helped each other to be who they truly are. I felt bad for her.

Courtney

Agreed. I liked seeing kimiko and Hughie working together. Also I just think about if they had the baby what Homelander would do to it.

Courtney

I honestly loved this season

Alex

The lack of kimiko and Frenchie paired up was for me, what bothered me about these first four episodes. Like how he was not doing drugs or drinking until Colin come in the picture. And how he wouldn't let her help him after the first three seasons they were attached at the hip and getting through the past together.

Courtney

LoL That dang shower curtain that always covers Karl Urban in that scene. It is always there, no matter how many times my lecherous ass wishes it off.

Rowan

It would be fine if the writing didn't suck. But it does so.

Mark

I definitely agree that, if we're talking overall storyline/plot, it felt a bit aimless at first but I personally didn't mind getting to see the slow buildup and focusing more on the side stories/characters for a change. I guess it's just different tastes :)

Alliee

Magical Shower Curtain?

toshtao

Nah I thought the writing was pretty horrible for the whole thing, characters were just treated poorly for the sake of shock value, recycled character arcs over and over again Have you noticed that at the end of every episode when they were releasing. No one talks about what amazing “story” moment happened but instead they talk about what shocking, gruesome thing happened.

Graviton

I've watched it at least 2 myself but I've watched many reactions and I like it more the more I watch it

Courtney

Yes. It makes it more nail biting. Stranger Things does this well also. Just different shows and content.

Rowan

feel like each season the last 3 or sometimes last 2 is when it really gets going

Alex

I'm only going to add in what I know to be true. It has been readily admitted by a large portion of viewers AND people who never saw it that they purposefully rating bombed it solely on what, to many, was already clear... they've gone after a certain political situation from day one. Eric Kripke also stated he was taking the padding off because of his personal beliefs and his fears of upcoming events. I don't think it was "off" as everything satired is quite easily what has actually happened, it was just offensive to those that are pro-"insert political lean here".

Rowan

Ok, forgot to put this in. I have a deep, abiding dislike for the magical shower curtain. I curse it every single time I've watched that scene. I agree this season got off on a slow start but they usually do just to make the last few episodes feel even more amped up. IMHO. Everyone was dealing with their demons, in many different ways. The juice IS worth the squeeze, I promise.

Rowan

"Tis strange -- but true; for truth is always strange; Stranger than fiction; if it could be told, How much would novels gain by the exchange!" Don Juan by author Lord Byron.

Rowan

This season is more gory and disgusting than ever! It's "The Boys" on crack. My gf doesn't like it either, but if Shoshana wants to bow out, we're still here if you need to solo it Vince <3

PO

Season 4 is awesome! Slow first 3 episodes but gets much better with this episode. Funny how some people are only now noticing what the show is criticizing in real life. It's satire people, get over it. Just enjoy the stupid superhero show we all loved for years

PO

i think this season was really just build up for the final season but it still was pretty good

Alex

To be fair, the show has always been politically ‘biased’ and they just leaned into it more this season. But there’s still some subtle moments critiquing the left in this season too. To me it felt like a natural escalation of the politics and storylines from the first 3 seasons, especially with the way Homelander’s character had developed. Rewatching the season though I do get a lot of the plot criticisms, especially the Frenchie/Collin storyline. The Starlight/Firecracker stuff felt out of left field too. I actually didn’t mind the storyline with Huey’s dad bc I felt like it illustrated a lot of character growth and to me it was still entertaining even as a B plot.

kways

some sub plots were pointless but other than that i really liked this season i don’t get people calling it garbage

Alex

damn really gonna miss out the finale was fire and i think this season they kinda dragged it seems like they saved everything important for the final season seems like the final season won’t have any filler pointless storylines just straight to it

Alex

the sub plots of frenchie and hughie situation with his father/mother this season is so random and i honestly didn’t care about them but this episode was fire i don’t get all the political hate like this show has been political since s1 it’s just more blatantly obvious now

Alex

I will admit this season is a bit more of a slow-burn than previous seasons, but I think much of that has to do with so many of the story threads being more characters struggling with psychological issues and the overarching story being a character's long con. Things really don't come together until the season finale. It's a risk on the showrunner's part, and I think the criticism shows that it didn't completely pan out for them. But the chess pieces are in place for what should be an interesting final season.

Mitchell Smilie

Ass take

JSM -Tac

Bad take

JSM -Tac

For those saying the politics in this show only slants one way, I don't agree. What is the purpose of Sage's plan but to pit both sides against each other by using their political and personal insecurities as a weapon? This is absolutely happening in our society right now. In fact, every society's ruling class has typically used divide and conquer as a means to keep the majority from solidifying around the issues that connects them. To quote one of my favorite movies, John Carpenter's "They Live", an eerily prescient film that was released 36 years ago: "The poor and the underclass are growing. Racial justice and human rights are non-existent. They have created a repressive society and we are their unwitting accomplices." Now, the show's writing staff leans left, like most people in the Hollywood industry, so the right might receive a few more barbs, but the satire remains on point. We've all seen the real-life counterparts of the Vought News character, or the Homelanders or the Starlighters, or Neumann (a bleeding-heart liberal until she pops your head for threatening her career and power or the benefactor that helped put her there), or the powerful corporations like Vought that use social issues as a means to push their terrible products. It's all a cudgel and we have to stop hitting each other over the head with it.

Mitchell Smilie

The end was good

JSM -Tac

You do realize that she can be critical all she wants right, she has been open minded about the show and has liked every season, if the show is not doing it for her, Then that’s her opinion I don’t understand why it’s a problem that she’s criticizing the show, hell even Vince has said that plot has lost him

Theo Sebuliba

I honestly could care less about the political stuff this season, my problem with this season is that there was no actual plot of the season until the last 2 episodes of the show, it felt like it was rushed at the end because they didn’t have a good enough story heading into season 5, it shouldn’t have taken them until the last 2 episodes to drum up a plot for this season, just my 2 cents on it

Theo Sebuliba

Yea. Just felt a bit overly critical for the 4th episode. The people that didn’t like the season are entitled to their opinion. They watched the season. But being as critical as she was seems a bit pre mature. And out of left field. I enjoy both of their commentary most of the time. But I can appreciate how Vince keeps an open mind to the story and the shows development.

Tripp

I love how people in the comments complain about the show being "too political" as if The Boys hasn't always been deeply political and been making fun of braindead right wing conservatives for the past 3 seasons. If you're only just now noticing that and are complaining about it, you're probably exactly the kind of person the show makes fun of. The real world is getting more and more politcial as people turn non-political things like sexuality into political issues to get votes from insecure uneducated people who think they're heroes for saving the kids from the evil gays while forcing their own kids to believe in fairy tales based on ancient values that don't belong in modern society. This season portraits the current political climate pretty well, just like the previous seasons have portraited the past political climates and societal issues in a satirical way very well. I agree that the storylines feel a bit random at times but the complaints about the show "pushing an agenda" or "being too political" is just silly...

Alliee

Haven’t seen the reaction yet but by seeing the comments kinda don’t even have too 😂 it’s crazy to me too cause this episode alone is at least top 10 greatest episodes of the boys out of all the seasons 🤷🏽‍♂️ Anthony is at his best

j0-2TiMEZz

season 4 finale is the best finale out of all 4 seasons imo & there’s a lot of things that top previous finale’s

CJ

Another great reaction

Ahmad Pattonbey

Great ass reaction guys! Personally I loved this season, one of the best ones, but it for sure pick up more after this episode

Simon

The way I see it, Maeve’s absence contributed to the show losing some quality. She was one of Shoshana’s favorite characters, and she especially delivered in the season 2 and 3 finales. As much as I wanna have her return, I get why she shouldn’t.

Aldo Gonzales

FINALLY been waiting for this

Simon

I felt the same way couldn’t get into the show as much as before and felt so much more different about this then the the other seasons, I did like this episode out of the first 4, but rewatching this I appreciate it a bit more, but my personal opinion I felt like that up until the last two episodes… I basically agreed with everything in your discussion (weakest season for me)

Kobe Adams

thats exactly what i think too

kevin

Don’t get me wrong. I enjoy her reactions just as much as Vince. It’s the mix of both of them that make it unique. It’s just the boys. I watch mostly for Vince’s input.

Tripp

Tbh they both are very open minded when it comes to movies and tv shows, they have liked flims that majority of other people might not have liked, shoshanna is very honest and doesn’t sugarcoat when she doesn’t like something, it’s ok if she feels that the show has taken a dip in quality, that’s her opinion and she can have that opinion, not everyone is going to share the same sentiment

Theo Sebuliba

Firecracker crazy but she a good little rivalry to give starlight a enemy to go up against . Starlight was the most loved hero . Now firecracker making her life hell. Hewey mom yeah I'm indifferent about her.

Tjbosslyfe

The first 3 episodes had me missing Gen V . They was doing what marvel be doing . Like they just read a bunch of controversial topics. And put them in the script . If the writers going to strike . We need better scripts .

Tjbosslyfe

yeah shes not into most things, very hard critic. Vince can appreciate things for what they are at least!

Cerebral

I felt the same way you guys felt. I was ready to stop watching the show . But this episode brought me back. It gets better from here. Everybody was trying to defend the Frenchie Collin storyline . I'm happy you both see what I was saying . It didn't even need to be in the show. The separated Frenchie and kemico. And gave them two pointless side quest .

Tjbosslyfe

And that's ok.

Mark

I disagree with you. Not the best season. But still enjoyable in my opinion. The political side is bothering you. It’s fine. There is a portion of peope that had this same visceral reaction. Everyone will never be on board with anything. This is America. Which goes back to what the show is saying.

Tripp

I love this show. To me there isn't a bad season. Everything all adds up to what happens in the last episodes

Courtney

Lol. They turned on it because the quality is lacking and the jokes stopped being subtle and became brazen and obvious. It's clearly not the same show or everyone would be on board with it. I like aspects of it it's just not great. Hopefully season 5 will go out with a bang.

Mark

Right I didn’t even realize that on first watch, frenchie works as the comic relief but also a guy that was flawed and was hiding demons from his past

Theo Sebuliba

What was the cut at 17 minutes?

Jamie

I would even argue that all the frenchy side story does is make him seem like an absolute POS. You knowingly sleep with the guy who's family you killed. The writers are basically just character assasinating one of the most loved characters. Who doesnt like frenchy afterall.

SavageDiplomat

The general consensus form who? There’s a portion of the fan base that had a visceral reaction due to the fact they feel like they’re being made fun of. Why is that? The show has always been political. Critic still gave this season 90% positive. I would say I’ve seen 65%..35% negative overall. But I do agree this season was not the best overall.

Tripp

Right, that’s literally been the main critique of this season, the sidestories are pointless and don’t add anything to the main plot of the season which at this point of the show was non existent

Theo Sebuliba

Yeah i can definitely see why you would feel like that. The whole frenchy side story, Hueys dad side story and even the whole Starlight / Firecracker storyline feels like padding.

SavageDiplomat

The thing I noticed about this season was that there was no plot up until the last 2 episodes, it’s like they realized that there wasn’t a good enough story heading into the final season, so they had to rush it at the end which isn’t good writing at all

Theo Sebuliba

She can have an opinion halfway through a season though, I pretty much felt the same way at this point of this season, there was basically no plot at this point and the storylines were all over the place, I appreciate the fact that she’s honest in her opinion and doesn’t sugarcoat it all, the show dropped off by this season and it’s pretty obvious

Theo Sebuliba

Overall its a decent season but its definitely the weakest in my opinion so i can definitely understand how Shoshana feels about the show. Its clearly politically biased. It used to be more nuanced but now that the show has gained enough popularity and its ending next season the writers no longer care about just making a good story they now want to be political activists through the writing and story telling. Great reaction though guys

SavageDiplomat

couldnt disagree more, and the political shit doesnt really bother me because the people they are making fun of does exist im not blind. and the story is just great, way better than season 2 atleast

håkon hollekim rodak

I loved this season. Was it the best no. It had the best finale of all the seasons in my opinion. I don’t get judging a show halfway through. From a reaction standopint. I really appreciate Shoshanas reactions on most of their content. She’s honest.

Tripp

When it comes to this show absolutely the politics is brazen and stupid this season. Don't try to pretend otherwise. I also stand by what I said. Most of these writers do not spend a lot of time out working with middle class America and its painfully obvious in the writing. I've also watched this entire season and I agree the Finale was great. But the show is losing its steam.

Mark

The other thing i noticed is that the actors don’t actually talk about the story of the season, they talk about the shock value scenes rather than actual plot which is concerning

Theo Sebuliba

You’ve been pushing this for a while now. Your political leaning has made you less objective.

Tripp

Shoshanna has liked every season so far until this one, you know it’s ok to have a difference of opinion once the show progresses, I liked every season up until this one aswell, and I actually agree with her on this one because the storylines are all over the place and the characters outside of homelander and butcher I don’t care for, this season was a step down from the previous 3 and that was the general consensus for this season

Theo Sebuliba

Ya that's why South Park remains relevant to this day. Poking fun of everyone is what makes good comedy. Now it's obvious the writers are sheltered Hollywood types who don't spend time out with working class people.

Mark

It’s pretty obvious Shoshana was not as big of a fan as Vince. That’s not surprising. That’s probably why he watched it without her initially. I mostly watch for Vince reaction only when it comes to the boys. I figured that’s why they watch 1 episode a week now.

Tripp

I feel like it was a great balance in season 1 because it was poking fun at everyone and it was subtle as well, but this season it’s so on the nose that it’s barely even satire anymore

Theo Sebuliba

That’s cool, I’m going to watch season 5 since it’s the last season, but after that, I’m checking out as well, I could careless about the spinoffs

Theo Sebuliba

Nah I’m not even gonna watch season 5, like I noticed the drop in writing quality ever since season 2 but I stuck with it because the premise was interesting but then after the first couple episodes of season 4 I knew that season 4 was going to be my last season That includes the finale that is so hyped by everybody in my opinion wasn’t even good. I could go more in depth but that would involve spoilers so I won’t but yeah I’m done with The Boys.

Graviton

If it wasn't for Homelander this show would be a flop. I'm easy to please and I find it hard to watch. The acting is sub par. Character arcs are boring. Shock value is just lame now. It is the most overrated show on TV. Antony Starr as Homelander is INCREDIBLE. He has been an exceptional actor since Banshee and I think he needs to distance himself from Homelander as soon as he can because he is a great actor. Also I know it's satire and it's funny at Times but they go out of their way to make certain American demographics look bad and its obvious they are obsessed with politics. Once you see it you can't unsee it.

Mark

My thoughts exactly, season 1 was the best season by far, it feels like a totally different show now, once the boys season 5 is over, that’ll be it for me, don’t really care about the spinoffs at all at this point

Theo Sebuliba

I agree with Shoshana, I’m not gonna say any spoilers about what happens later on but this was the season that made drop the show and made me disinterested in any future plot lines. I personally feel that season 1 was the best season and it’s been declining since then.

Graviton

I’m gonna say season 4 is definitely the weakest season but it has a great finale.

Biglo

Her opinion can’t be set in stone until she’s seen all the episodes. Yours can if you seen them. It’s valid. Until she watches more than half the season. It’s not valid.

Tripp

This season has a lot of political/Cold War vibes to set up future conflicts. I don’t think those slower pace type of themes go well with an outrageous shock value show such as the Boys. Episode 5 is where the season really picked up for me and nearly EVERYONE agrees that the last 2 episodes go CRAZY. Some of the storylines def become more important/interesting

Diego Reyes

Watching it for a second time, I now realize why the episodes are an hour long from this point forward, they were trying to focus more on individual storylines rather than an actual overarching story that drives the season, they were trying to cram in characters storylines into a hour long episode and it doesn’t work, I think they realized by episode 7 that they didn’t have a good enough story to head into the final season so they kinda rushed it at the end of this season

Theo Sebuliba

I never thought I could be more terrified of Homelander until this episode

Biglo

I don’t disagree. Maybe that’s why they dropped the first three episodes of the season in one day. Shoshana did kinda anticipate this would happen, but once again the second half of the season is when it gets better.

Aldo Gonzales

Definitely agree to a degree with Shoshana. For me this was the weakest season by far minus the finale. Jumbled story lines, too much going for shock factor over legitimate plot progression imo

Raden

5:40 just a little reminder, Gen V season 2 is slated for next year. I got some things to say involving Hughie: 1.) This is the first time we see him team up with Kimiko for a dynamic duo mission. He’s obviously not the most skilled fighter in the group, but he learns quick. 2.) The only thing that would’ve made me upset about Annie’s abortion is if she didn’t tell him. However, since he knew about it from the beginning that’s all that really matters. Whatever her reasons, it’s her body and her choice. 3.) And finally, Hughie wasn’t forced to forgive A-Train. However, I understand that he wants to let go of the hatred and not let it anchor him. Of course, that doesn’t excuse what A-Train did to his own girlfriend Popclaw.

Aldo Gonzales

I mean.... At least he allowed Marty to pleasure himself one last time.

LittleGalaxyBoy

Good man marty what a spuirt 😂
