The film was universally disliked thanks to alot of studio interference similar to what happened with Zack's Justice League. David has stated that his Ayer Cut is a much better film and would love to see it be released some day like the Snyder cut. Suicide Squad has good elements so it's still a good watch but I personally prefer the The Suicide Squad (2021) directed James Gunn. Do you need to watch David Ayer's Suicide Squad (2016) to understand James Gunn's Suicide Squad? Well when it came time for a new Suicide film. James Gunn stepped in as director. Knowing that alot of people didn't really vibe with the 2016 film the decision was made to make The Suicide Squad (2021) a soft reboot. This would allow the David Ayer's 2016 film to still remain canon to the DCEU but with the 2021 film being a soft reboot this would allow James Gunn to disconnect his film from David Ayer's movie by introducing a new narrative with a time jump, whole new cast of characters etc. They only aspect that connects both films together is returning characters from Suicide Squad (2016) who are played by the same actors in James Gunn's film, Bridging both films together by characters rather than narrative. So the answer is NO. You can go into The Suicide Squad (2021) with zero insight into any past DCEU projects including Suicide Squad (2016). It's by the far the most stand alone film in the DCEU post Man of Steel.
